Chapter 449: Chapter 449: Super-Large Exotic Beast (Big Chapter)
The first exotic beast to break in was strange; it had an upper body similar to a human and the lower body of a bull.
A sturdy exoskeleton formed on its upper body, resembling human clothing. If one were to look at the upper body alone, at first glance, they might think it was a human from the city.
At the moment, the beast’s front legs were kneeling on the ground, its entire body pressing down, like a human’s upper body slowly bending as it reached out to pick a roasted, fragrant Phantom Mushroom from the ground.
In its eyes, there was only the mushroom, sticky liquid sliding from the corner of its mouth.
It opened its mouth, which wasn’t on the human-like head but at the neck, the very human head lifted to reveal a jagged maw filled with sharp fangs on the neck.
The bright red tongue reached out, eager to cram the Phantom Mushroom into its mouth.
In that instant, a flash of silver sword light streaked by, and the exotic beast was cut in half at the waist.
Its open mouth was forever fixed in that last movement, with blood glowing red splattering across the nearby Phantom Mushrooms’ scorched caps.
The first one.
He Ao deactivated his Stealth, revealing himself amid the flames.
He glanced back at the body of the beast, leapt back onto his motorcycle, which was parked not far away.
A bright flare shot up in the distance, signaling a new exotic beast had slipped in.
To ensure He Ao could handle these beasts easily, the Elder Leader had dug out many Transcendent items from the Andavi family’s warehouse, using them to herd the lured beasts, trying to concentrate them in one area.
This was very important for He Ao, whose mobility was slightly lacking.
The off-road motorcycle beneath He Ao was the fastest, most heat-resistant means of transport the Andavi family could find.
Faster equipment was either picky about driving conditions or required a professional driving team - neither of which were possible in the current situation.
In fact, Combat Mechs, which were most suitable for this environment, were unavailable to Wilderness Wanderers around Limen City.
The Federation and the major conglomerates strictly regulated powerful military-grade equipment like Combat Mechs, only allowing qualified businesses or organizations to purchase them.
Even in the black market, proof of funds and a guarantee were required, with exorbitant prices beyond what Wilderness Wanderers could afford.
In fact, forget the lowest-tier Combat Mechs, even clunky Engineering Mechs were something Wilderness Wanderers could only purchase from black market dealers at high prices – outdated models retired many years earlier.
However, different conditions require different approaches. Solely in terms of speed, the small motorcycle beneath He Ao wouldn’t be much slower than a Combat Mech.
Soon, He Ao found the second intruding exotic beast using his Divine Sense.
These beasts were attracted by the Phantom Mushrooms, so after entering the area they’d head straight for the places where the mushrooms were most abundant, which wasn’t too hard to find.
He first dismounted the motorcycle and activated his Stealth to move closer.
For an Assassin, a silent approach and a one-hit kill were basic professional conduct.
This time, the exotic beast resembled a wild horse with a horn and scales, and it quickly fell to He Ao’s sword.
Almost at the same moment, He Ao killed this beast, a new flare indicating another exotic beast’s entrance was launched in the distance.
He Ao rode the motorcycle over quickly.
——
"This exotic beast ran away."
The elder leader of the Andavi family drove a clearly modified small off-road vehicle, stopping on a small hillock.
Ennie sat in the back seat of her motorcycle, taking a flashlight to inspect the surrounding tracks, "It looks like it was big."
"It should be three to four meters long, there are no other exotic beasts’ tracks around, and judging by the timing of the marks, it ran away as soon as we started setting up; it must have been a C-level exotic beast," the elder’s voice was slow and hoarse. "It’s very smart. It sensed that something was wrong and ran away immediately. This is the second one we’ve seen escape."
Some exotic beasts are born with the ability to sense danger, evading it before the crisis arrives.
"Does this exotic beast seem to have stumbled here?"
Ennie was somewhat puzzled.
"Hmm?"
The old village chief was stunned; he turned his head, following the beam of Ennie’s flashlight.
Where the flashlight’s light converged, there was a patch of soil that was a different color from the nearby land, and it had a distinct elevation difference—it appeared as if it had just been rolled over by something heavy and looked quite fresh.
Looking at this patch of land, the old village chief slightly furrowed his brow. He maneuvered the off-road vehicle closer to the area and then turned on the large lights on the vehicle’s roof.
In an instant, the surrounding landscape was fully illuminated, and the somewhat freshly colored soil fully exposed in the pair’s view.
A giant, with a diameter of more than ten meters, nearly circular shallow pit appeared in their field of vision.
Ennie swallowed, "Village chief, can a three to four meter exotic beast make such a big pit?"
"This is not a pit," the old village chief paused for a moment, his voice trembling slightly, "this is a ’footprint’."
----
Under the surging flames, He Ao wiped the sweat that had seeped from his forehead and cautiously approached the Giant Rat ahead.
The Giant Rat, about two meters tall and light green all over, stood still, rising up like a small mountain.
At this moment, the Giant Rat was sniffing at a mushroom on the mountain rock, seemingly hesitant.
The third wave of exotic beasts had already been dealt with by He Ao, and this was the fourth wave.
This time there were two C-level exotic beasts.
He Ao turned his head and looked at the front side of the Giant Rat, where a mountain cat-like exotic beast was crouching on the ground, sniffing the scorched yellow mushrooms on the ground.
The two exotic beasts were too far apart—if He Ao killed one, the other would surely notice, become more cautious, and then He Ao would risk being exposed.
The best method was to gather the two beasts together and kill them quickly before they could react.
He Ao looked thoughtfully at the roaring flames burning continuously behind the mountain cat.
He touched the Fireproof Ring on his hand and quickly walked behind the mountain cat.
From his practical experience, he knew that wearing a Fireproof Ring, the closer one was to the flames, the larger the fire waves that were drawn.
After barely waiting for a moment, the raging fire burst in an instant, and the surging waves of fire attacked from that side.
He Ao, prepared for this, quickly dodged to the side.
The mountain cat, still sniffing at the Phantom Mushrooms and resisting the temptation, conflicted about whether to eat or not, was startled by the sudden burst.
Its body instantly arched, and it jumped next to the Giant Rat.
Now is the time!
He Ao followed at once, taking advantage of the mountain cat’s distraction, he swung his sword, slicing across the cat’s neck.
Then, without looking back, he charged toward the Giant Rat behind the mountain cat.
The Giant Rat, still unaware of what had happened, was pierced through the brain by the sharp bayonet.
As the two exotic beasts fell, He Ao emerged from the flames.
He turned around, glanced at the two carcasses on the ground, walked over to the Giant Rat, and removed the bayonet that had pierced its brain.
The fifth one.
He Ao was now at the edge of the central area, with the surging flames quickly closing in on his location.
There were no new signal flares rising in the sky, meaning no new C-level exotic beasts were coming in for the time being.
He Ao mounted his motorcycle and began moving towards the areas where the Phantom Mushrooms were more concentrated, the areas with the strongest allure.
For the entire Phantom Mushrooms area, the allure of the mushrooms that had suddenly intensified due to the burning flames was now rapidly diminishing. Although the attraction of the surviving individual fungi had increased, the number of these survivors was swiftly decreasing.
New Phantom Mushrooms were continuously turning into dust in the flames before setting off even more violent blazes.
He Ao’s body was hunched over the motorcycle, weaving through the raging fires.
He would occasionally stop to snatch some unburned Phantom Mushroom powder from the roaring inferno.
Because of the Fireproof Ring, he dared not directly touch the flames and was skirting the edges of the fire.
Another flare lit up the sky, but this time it was different from the usual ones; when it exploded in the sky, it unleashed a dazzling red glow.
He Ao frowned slightly, riding his motorcycle through the sea of flames and quickly reaching the outer boundary of the Phantom Mushrooms area, where his unlimited power device could now faintly connect to external signals.
"Dad... Dad... Can you hear me?"
Ennie’s call, fraught with intense static, came through the communicator. She had clearly been calling out many times and her voice was already somewhat hoarse.
He Ao connected to the communicator and shifted slightly toward the direction of the flare’s origin, "I can hear you, what’s wrong?"
"Dad! The Elder... he says you must run fast!"
Ennie had clearly lost her composure, her voice intermittent, but the signal was somewhat better than before.
It seemed that the Elder had also realized that Ennie was starting to lose control of her emotions, so his voice cut into the communication channel, "Pete, we just spotted huge exotic beast footprints at the perimeter. These Phantom Mushrooms have attracted something terrifying. The mission has failed, evacuate now! Leave the rest to the Divine Beings."
It was the first time He Ao heard the Elder speak so urgently, and after that statement, heavy panting could be heard from the Elder’s end.
This tone of voice must have placed quite a burden on the Elder.
A giant exotic beast meant only one thing: C-level.
C-level doesn’t necessarily mean a huge size, but the majority of giant exotic beasts are C-level.
"Has everyone else retreated?"
He Ao glanced around at the surging flames. In his field of view, there were still large areas of Phantom Mushrooms left unburned.
"Wilderness Wanderers clans at the perimeter have also found footprints. The defensive line there will probably collapse soon," the Elder quickly explained, "The Andavi clan can hold a little longer, but once the perimeter defense falls, we won’t last long against an exotic beast onslaught and will have to evacuate."
"How long can we hold out?"
He Ao slowly turned the motorcycle around.
Upon hearing this question, the Elder paused, then spoke swiftly, "At most ten minutes."
"Give me ten minutes," He Ao said as he took a fireproof helmet from the storage box under the motorcycle and fitted it onto his head. He leaned forward, his chest close to the scorching motorcycle body, "Look after my daughter for me."
The motorcycle, enveloped by billows of heat, plunged into the roaring flames.
The raging fire engulfed He Ao’s body, and his fireproof suit split open in many places in an instant, the tough fire-resistant fibers curling up swiftly.
The time spent passing through the flames was short. He Ao quickly landed in the secondary outer area, between the outer edge and the central region.
Because the plan he had set with the Elder was to start burning from both inside and out, this area located between the edge and the center turned out to be the safest, the last to burn.
Here, the Phantom Mushrooms still maintained a lush appearance, with some even remaining pristine white, unscorched by the flames into a yellowed state.
If at this very moment there were any place where the Phantom Mushrooms could still emit allure to attract a C-level exotic beast, it would be here.
The charred wheels touched down in the flourishing field of Phantom Mushrooms, cutting long, diagonal grooves, crushing swathes of mushrooms.
He Ao didn’t look back. After ’drifting’ a distance through the field of Phantom Mushrooms, he opened the throttle to the max, shooting out like a phantom.
Billowing waves of fire exploded behind him like boiling bubbles, with licks of flame swiftly igniting the surrounding mushrooms.
This seemed to be just an accidental incident, where the Phantom Mushrooms, long parched by the heat, just happened to catch fire, allowing the flames to spread.
However, the fire kindled by accident kept expanding towards He Ao’s direction, like a ferocious fire dragon, closely following right behind him.
Like a cunning hunter chasing its prey.
He Ao glanced through the rearview mirror, which was already slightly misaligned, at the flames behind him.
His expression beneath the helmet was emotionless.
As he had expected, directly touching the Flame Flower with the Fireproof Ring invited the most fierce pursuit and retaliation of the flames.
The roaring fire dragon followed He Ao, turning any Phantom Mushrooms and even exposed skeletons on the ground into ashes.
If one were to look from above, it would seem as if the entire area’s surging waves of fire were gathering around He Ao.
During this process, He Ao had already encountered several fire walls blocking his path.
When confronting these situations, he had no choice but to plow through them; his fireproof suit, after numerous passes through the flames, was mostly destroyed, revealing the scorched skin and gaping wounds beneath.
The more fire walls he crashed through, the greater the attraction to the flames seemed to be, and the stronger the gathered flames became.
The flames surrounding He Ao grew more numerous, some reaching terrifying temperatures with the help of the accumulated powder from the Phantom Mushrooms.
Under such intense heat, the Phantom Mushrooms were quickly consumed by the fire.
However, the Phantom Mushrooms didn’t just wait to die. In the last moments before burning out, they released an allure far exceeding their normal state.
This allure, at the moment of its explosion, could even rival the strongest allure when the flames had first ignited.
Ten minutes is a long time, and He Ao didn’t know just how fast he had accelerated to at this point, as the motorcycle’s dashboard had long since been damaged.
Passing over various small slopes, he even felt as if his body never touched the ground, continuously launching into the air with each sprint.
Ten minutes is also very short.
As the ten minutes were about to run out, the motorcycle beneath He Ao finally fell apart completely, shattering into several pieces under him, and He Ao was flung out by the great inertia.
He tumbled into the muddy ground.
He lifted his head to see a massive wave of fire rolling in from the front, the ferocious blaze having already turned the Phantom Mushrooms ahead to ashes.
Turning to look behind him, he saw the ’fire dragon’ that had been relentlessly chasing him.
He Ao felt a powerful sense of hunger welling up from deep within him, the Phantom Mushrooms’ last cry before death.
He struggled to get up from the ground, took a deep breath after looking at the flames coming from both sides, removed the Fireproof Ring, and activated Stealth.
The flames on both sides seemed to slow down their approach but continued to advance toward him.
He Ao looked towards the front in the night.
It was time for it to appear.
A gigantic Black Shadow landed in front of He Ao; it was a bat that stood half a head taller than him.
This was a C-level exotic beast that had infiltrated the area, and its presence here, without any flare signals as a warning, meant that the Andavi family’s defenses had partially failed.
But this wasn’t what He Ao had been waiting for.
He gripped his short sword, eyeing the enormous bat.
At that moment, the bat was bending over, trying to devour the scarce Phantom Mushrooms on the ground.
He Ao tightened his grip on the sword slightly.
If his bet failed, he would have to kill the exotic beast and run away.
In that instant, a gigantic foot descended from the heavens, landing on top of the bat’s head and crushing the exotic beast into a pulp in a flash.
He Ao removed his helmet and looked up.
The immense Shadow obscured the stars and the bright moon.
The towering flames that had raged wildly were, in that moment, blocked by that vast physique.
