Chapter 432: Leaving the City (Requesting Monthly Passes)

Chapter 432: Chapter 432: Leaving the City (Requesting Monthly Passes)

After reviewing the information, He Ao closed his bracelet, turned his head, and looked at his confused daughter,

"Pack your things, don’t bring too much, and then ask your teachers for a week off."

"Ah?"

Ennie was stunned.

"We need to leave here immediately."

He Ao said calmly and then removed the blood-stained overcoat from his body, changed into a clean coat, and left the house.

Ennie didn’t know what her father was going to do, but it was clear that it didn’t require her to think about it.

She yawned, dragged the long-unused small suitcase out of the corner of the living room, and began to pack her personal belongings.

Meanwhile, He Ao stepped out of the house and briefly activated Super Memory again.

He saw the faint footprints of Black Shadow again, the direction of the footprints leading from the end of the corridor to the front door of the house.

He Ao followed the footprints, which started at the ventilation window at the end of the corridor. Through the window, one could see the dazzling lights outside the building.

Did Black Shadow directly climb in through the window?

No, Black Shadow had no flying equipment on his person, and since he was able to conceal his presence, there was no need to choose such a complex operation as travelling through the air.

He Ao looked down at the footprints beneath him and walked along them again. The footprints were all very regular, with approximately consistent intervals between steps, seemingly leading directly from the ventilation window to the doorstep of He Ao’s home.

Eventually, He Ao’s steps halted in front of the elevator.

From the elevator forward, all the footprints leading to He Ao’s doorstep seemed ’lighter.’

The original footprints were already barely visible to the naked eye, and this change was subtle. With the back and forth of people, some of the footprints had already been destroyed.

Even with Super Memory, He Ao was nearly deceived.

He Ao crouched down, observing these footprints closely.

If it wasn’t that Black Shadow had suddenly lightened his steps here, then it was the previous footprints that were ’problematic.’

He Ao stood up, faced forward, and began to step backward, maintaining the same distance with each step until he came to a stop in front of the ventilation window.

Then he continued forward, each step landing on his previous backward footprints, until he passed the elevator and reached the front door of his own home.

Looking back, the footprints he had just made almost matched with those left by Black Shadow.

Deep first, then shallow, all becoming lighter after passing the elevator.

That’s because the footprints before the elevator were actually two sets of footprints that overlapped, so they were bound to be deeper than those after the elevator.

Yet the depth difference in Black Shadow’s footprints was not as marked as He Ao’s; it appeared he had deliberately made his steps heavier after passing the elevator, to minimize the difference between the footprints before and after.

This guy is quite cautious.

Black Shadow had first backed up to the ventilation window, then continued forward, pretending that he had come in through the window.

But what was the purpose of doing so?

To mislead the investigators’ train of thought?

He Ao followed the footprints forward, and eventually, his steps stopped in front of the water meter cabinet in the corridor.

This cabinet contained the water meters for all the residents on this floor.

Since they were all smart water meters now, there was no need for manual checking, so this box was typically locked year-round. The area around the box even had minor rust.

But now, in He Ao’s eyes, there were new ’scratches’ at the edge of the box, so faint and subtle that they would be entirely unnoticeable without close inspection.

He Ao reached straight for the handle of the box and, with a gentle pull, the supposedly locked water meter cabinet swung open, revealing the dense cluster of smart meters inside.

Beneath the smart meters, two silver boxes were wedged into the narrow space below.

······

Did this guy really need to go through such trouble just to hide something?

Too cautious.

But indeed, this approach could mislead the investigators’ thoughts—if his assassination had been successful.

He Ao didn’t directly touch the box, but instead activated Super Memory to carefully observe the inside of the water tank.

Then, at the very bottom layer underneath the water meter, he found a piece of high-performance explosives attached to the underside of the meter.

It was the latest model of high-performance explosives developed by Yiwis Space System, and although the piece wasn’t large—just a five-centimeter-wide square block—it was extremely powerful.

Right next to this water tank was the building’s main load-bearing wall.

If it really exploded, it could likely send this floor and even those above and below it straight to Heaven.

······

He Ao was checking to see if Black Shadow had left any contingencies, but the man’s caution still somewhat exceeded his expectations.

The detonation device on the explosives was purely mechanical, showing that Black Shadow didn’t trust electronic devices.

The trigger device for the explosive was the box below; as soon as the box was touched, the explosive would detonate immediately.

Besides that, there was a timer on the explosive, set to go off at six in the morning. It seemed that this was the last moment Black Shadow had prepared for completing his mission.

Luckily, He Ao had come out to check.

He examined it carefully for a while and then reached out to touch the detonator on the explosive.

With mechanical devices, Vian’s expertise was far superior to Black Shadow’s.

His Divine Sense infiltrated it, understood the internal mechanisms, and then he exerted a slight force with his hand to carefully disengage the detonation device and destroy the primer within.

Then he dismantled the explosives and pocketed them.

Without a detonation device, this kind of explosive was very stable, one of the most advanced explosives available, only obtainable through special channels and at a high price.

This also counted as a small gain.

After dealing with the explosives, He Ao picked up the two boxes underneath them.

The boxes were not locked.

He Ao walked over to the ventilation window, activated Super Memory, and cautiously opened the boxes.

According to Black Shadow’s cautious nature, it was possible that he had put some kind of contaminant, or even a potent poison, inside the boxes.

As the boxes were opened, a tube containing a translucent liquid that emitted a faint milky-white glow came into He Ao’s view.

This tube was very similar to the one He Ao had gotten from Black Shadow, but obviously its concentration was higher and it was more unstable.

In the short time that He Ao had the tube open, he could already feel a significant overflow of energy.

He closed the box, opened the other one, and found another identical tube inside.

It seemed that the box wasn’t originally Black Shadow’s.

A reward from the Research Institute?

He Ao closed the box, took it in hand, and gave the surroundings another careful check. He took the elevator to inspect a few nearby floors to confirm that Black Shadow hadn’t left any other surprises. Afterward, he returned home.

"Dad, I asked the teacher for a leave, but she hasn’t replied to me yet,"

Ennie had already packed a small suitcase and was blinking her eyes, looking at He Ao, "Where are we going?"

"Away from this city."

He Ao glanced out the window at the city lights and picked up the luggage bag containing Black Shadow’s corpse.

——

"According to the meteorological station, Hurricane Noah is expected to reach Limen City at about nine in the morning... Please, residents, take precautions and avoid going out unless necessary."

The morning news was playing on TV.

In the office outside the television, Reid was looking at the bracelet in his hand, his expression somber, his gaze cold,

"Shadow’s dead."

"Hm?"

The military officer, who had just woken up and come to work, was somewhat confused.

"Black Shadow would send me a message the morning after completing a mission."

Reid glanced at the officer and said calmly.

"Did you not receive any messages today?"

The officer hesitated for a moment, then spoke slowly, "Or could it be that he didn’t go on a mission last night, and went today?"

"He has always been very punctual."

Reid half-closed his eyes, his fingers tapping on the desk, making a faint pounding sound.

The officer knew Reid was thinking.

He stood quietly by the side, silently waiting for Reid’s orders.

He knew when to speak and when to keep silent.

Just then, Reid’s hand ring vibrated. He lifted his wrist to glance at it, then immediately looked up at the officer.

"Go to the warehouse and get five enhancement drugs," Reid said with a hint of excitement, "Then take the assault team to the airport, and strictly check everyone going to the airport."

"This is?"

The officer asked softly.

"That guy, encountering this situation, surely won’t stay at home any longer,"

Reid spoke slowly,

"He also has a daughter who hasn’t shown any particular peculiarities. I don’t know why he would choose to hide in this city, but he should know that he can’t fight against our power, which is why he reached a ’settlement’ with me.

"Now that we have shown our true colors, for the safety of his daughter, he surely won’t directly confront us. His first option must be to leave the city."

"But how do you know he is going to the airport?"

The officer asked softly.

"He just bought an airship ticket," Reid smiled, watching the officer, "When Black Shadow left, I had the airport watched. In Limen City, no one can fight against us."

The officer quickly smiled and saluted, "Director, your vision is extraordinary, I will get it done immediately."

——

The wild wind whipped up the torrential rain, which fell to the ground like cascades of silver beads.

Outside Limen City Airport, a mini unmanned drone was perched on the eaves quietly watching the bustling entrance of the airport.

A few people dressed as mercenaries were patrolling the edge of the airport, scrutinizing all the passengers entering the airport.

Limen City’s population wasn’t large, and the flow of people to and from other cities was not significant, so the airport was not built on a large scale, and there were few airships coming and going.

The Federation’s airports were basically built by consortia.

Some cities were big, with a large slice of the cake to divide, so more parties were involved in the dividing. Some cities were small, with a smaller slice, so fewer parties were involved.

For example, the airport in Dawn City was led by the Nord Consortium, in cooperation with dozens of large consortia, ensuring that both locals and outsiders could get a piece of the cake.

Similarly, the airport in Kaye City was built with the Nolanka Group at the helm.

As for Limen City, it was smaller, and the return on investment for the airport was low, so there was only one consortium operating the airport, and most of the airships also belonged to the same consortium,

Stars Pharma.

All the consortia claimed to keep passengers’ information strictly confidential, but He Ao, possessing Super Memory, was clear on the fact that such secrecy was relative.

For some people, these confidentiality measures were relatively weaker.

Like those within the consortium with higher levels of clearance.

······

"Dad, where are we going?"

Ennie stuck her head out, holding her little suitcase, looking at He Ao with confusion.

The two of them were currently surrounded by darkness, seemingly inside the cargo box of a moving vehicle.

Ennie’s body gently swayed with the movement of the car, and she felt a bit scared.

"The wilderness."

He Ao withdrew his gaze from the viewscreen on his hand ring delivered by the drone.

He looked at his daughter, gently touched her head, "The days ahead might be a bit tough, are you prepared for that?"

"Dad, I’m sixteen now, not a little kid who gets patted on the head anymore."

Ennie tried to dodge He Ao’s hand, but unfortunately, she didn’t manage to.

Eventually, she pouted, "I can take hardship, I’m the best in my class at completing homework. Not only do I do it in class, but I also do it at home. I work part-time until midnight every day and still manage to write for two more hours when I get home."

"You’ve worked hard, you’re the best."

He Ao looked at his daughter, paused, and revealed a gentle smile, gently rubbing her head.

He knew very well that his daughter said these things because she wanted her father’s encouragement.

In the past, she had to work in secret, keeping it from her father, swallowing all of the grievances she faced alone.

To ensure her father didn’t suspect anything, she would finish her part-time job and still complete her homework at home, keeping up with her studies.

And all of this was just to contribute to the household as much as possible while protecting her unemployed father’s frail self-esteem.

The young girl never once complained to He Ao about the hardships of working in a convenience store.

But He Ao, who had once done similar work, knew all too well how many odd and difficult customers front-line service workers encountered every day, and how much they suffered.

Ennie looked at He Ao’s gentle smile illuminated by the light from his wristband, pouted, and didn’t mention not letting He Ao touch her head again.

She was carrying her suitcase.

She didn’t know why, but it seemed as though life hadn’t changed much, yet it had become even more unsettled.

Yet she felt more relaxed and happy now than before.

Maybe it was because she now had someone to rely on.

At that moment, He Ao raised his wristband and dialed a familiar number.

——

The carriage shook and swayed, stopping and going.

Until it came to a halt.

Outside was the sound of violent wind driving heavy rain against the tin carriage.

All of a sudden, everything around became eerily quiet.

Then the rear door of the carriage was flung open with a loud bang.

A man in a dark, thick raincoat stood in the pouring rain, wiping the water from his face, "We agreed I’d take you two up to the wilderness, but the road ahead is blocked. This is where you’ll get off."

He Ao glanced at the desolate hills on both sides and the muddy road beneath the vehicle.

The heavy rain fell on the low shrubs.

"Here?"

He calmly looked at the man outside, "Didn’t you say you’d take us to the Wanderer Camp?"

"You think you get to go wherever you say?"

The man spat, sneering, "Mister, you must be accustomed to city life and unaware of the rules of the wilderness."

"What rules of the wilderness?"

He Ao asked with a smile.

"The rule of the wilderness is that there are no rules,"

he replied, pulling out a handgun and smirking as he loaded it in the downpour, "Look at the nice scenery here. Wouldn’t it be beautiful to bury you here? As for your pretty daughter, I’ll reluctantly take her off your hands. Once we reach Ains, she’ll fetch a nice price."

Ennie glanced at her father, while He Ao simply continued to watch the man in the rain with a smile, softly saying,

"It looks like you’re quite familiar with the wilderness, but do you know that when you encounter a blockage in the wilderness, you need to be especially careful?"

"Hmm?"

The man’s eyes suddenly widened.

Bang—

The crisp sound rattled the raindrops.
