"Firstly, I’m a good person, and then let me share my discovery.
"During the time we passed through the tunnel, I didn’t sleep at all. I didn’t hear any footsteps, but during the third hour into the tunnel, I felt some sort of disturbance. It was very slight, but I have sharp hearing and caught it, like some extremely faint noise."
The next one was Luo Luo, who was number six, the last compartment, also next to the compartment of the man who had already died. She continued slowly,
"I think that sound could very likely have been the noise of the deceased falling to the ground as they died. The murderer must have moved very softly, hardly making any noise.
"But what’s strange is that the deceased didn’t make any sound either. Looking at the deceased’s wound, it was a stab from behind, which anyhow couldn’t have been instantly fatal to the point of the deceased not being able to make any noise at all."
Having said this, Luo Luo sighed, "Unfortunately, the body is gone, and we can’t perform any examination."
"It’s possible that the murderer, with absolute strength, killed the victim first, moving very quickly, not giving the victim time to speak. The sound of the victim collapsing with a thud is not likely to be as light as you said, that’s probably the sound of the murderer slowly laying down the body."
He Ao casually joined in the conversation.
"It’s possible, so the stab in the back, was it deliberately staged? Why would the murderer want to stage that?"
Luo Luo nodded, then her head suddenly popped up like a spring, her eyes widening as she looked at He Ao, "How come you’re so proficient?"
"..."
He Ao paused, "I have a wide range of interests and know a lot of various things."
"Oh."
Luo Luo pondered for a moment, nodding in skepticism.
The last one was Lin Chichi. Lin Chichi, musing, said, "I also slept through the tunnel and only woke up near the end. I didn’t hear anything... though I’m a good person."
With that, everyone had spoken.
Jin Ya suddenly turned her head and said "Thank you" to Ruoti in Tia language.
Ruoti: ???
He Ao had roughly translated what everyone had just said to Jin Ya and then let everyone speak freely.
"Actually, there’s one problem," this time it was Jin Ya who spoke first, looking at He Ao,
"We are all unable to open the door, which means if the murderer wanted to kill someone, they would have to open the door from outside to get in. But why was the passenger from compartment five found dead in the hallway? If he was dragged out by the murderer, why did the murderer drag him out?"
He Ao translated Jin Ya’s words to the others.
"Indeed," Luo Luo nodded as well, "There are too many suspicious aspects with this victim."
Lin Chichi didn’t dare to speak, she had never been exposed to such a scene before and her mind was somewhat blank.
"Perhaps, the murderer and the victim had a personal vendetta. The murderer beat the victim in the compartment, wasn’t satisfied, and then dragged the victim out into the hallway to kill them brutally."
Ruoti leaned on the chair, saying with a smile in Central Earth language.
His words were full of insinuation and everyone’s expression changed, except for Jin Ya.
Among the five present, it was obvious that He Ao was the one who had had a confrontation with the victim.
He Ao narrowed his eyes.
It seemed Ruoti had not always shut the door; he must have secretly opened it and seen He Ao ’taking care’ of the victim,
"Moreover, what’s the use of discussing all this here?"
Ruoti patted his buttocks and stood up, "Even if we find the murderer on this train, can we bring them to justice? It would be better to ponder over the words we might use to beg for mercy when we face the murderer. Maybe if the murderer is in a good mood, they’ll let us go."
He deliberately repeated this statement in Tia language.
Everyone’s expression turned grave.
"We are not without the ability to retaliate."
He Ao said slowly, as he too stood up and walked towards the compartment carriage.
Everyone exchanged puzzled looks and followed him.
He Ao finally stopped in front of the door of the seventh compartment, when the conductor approached, "Sir, can I help you with anything?"
"Can we open this door?"
He Ao extended his hand, pointing towards the seventh compartment which was sealed with a mechanical lock.
"You must be out of your mind. Do you think I didn’t have the steward open the other doors at the beginning?"
Ruoti snickered.
He belonged to the first compartment and had tried to have the steward open other doors to seek a way out at the start.
He shook his head, turning and heading towards the dining cart.
He spoke these words in Central Earth’s language, seizing upon every possible mistake to undermine He Ao’s credibility.
"Of course we can."
The steward nodded with a smile, then took out a metal key and unlocked the door to Compartment Seven.
······
Ruoti, who was on his way to the dining cart, stiffened in his movements.
The small door of Compartment Seven opened slowly, revealing not the neat decor like the other compartments, but a pitch-black vortex that occupied most of the space.
The steward looked at the vortex and seemed not at all troubled by the presence of a vortex inside a compartment. He turned to the crowd and explained,
"If the majority of you esteemed guests think someone is the bad guy, you can call me to capture them and push them into this vortex."
He flashed the most gentle of smiles while uttering the most terrifying words.
This train was encouraging its passengers to turn on one another.
This was within He Ao’s expectations as well.
When he was dealing with the brown curly-haired man who was already dead, he had sensed that this train didn’t permit passengers to kill each other.
This meant that the passengers seemed to lack the capability to retaliate.
But the train must have considered fairness when designing this game; if the passengers couldn’t lay hands on the murderer themselves, then there certainly was a way for the ’good people’ to kill the murderer built into the system.
Since this method had not been disclosed, it was most likely hidden somewhere.
And on this train, there were only so many places to hide things. Trying them all would surely yield an answer.
This vortex must also be a rule; when the majority vote that someone is the bad guy, that person would be pushed into the vortex.
Chances were, one wouldn’t survive after entering the vortex.
This meant that everyone present, whether capable or not, had a vote that could potentially lead to the death of another.
Winning by voting the murderer to death was natural, yet voting a good person to death would essentially be aiding the murderer.
Moreover, killing required one to be psychologically prepared and to bear the psychological consequences.
Everyone stared at the vortex, falling into a brief period of introspection.
He Ao also fell into contemplation; however, he was considering that this vortex must be an important rule—without it, the game’s balance would be severely impacted.
Why would the train hide this vortex?
The steward left slowly, and the entire atmosphere turned somewhat oppressive.
Even Ruoti stopped provoking others, lost in thought,
Outside the window was a dazzling sunset, with rosy twilight spreading across the sky and the sea, but the people inside the car had no leisure to appreciate the splendid view.
Grumble grumble—
A crisp sound broke the silent stillness.
Lin Chichi pressed her hand against her stomach, looking at the crowd with a slightly embarrassed, flushed face.
It had been over eight hours since she boarded the train, and she had neither drunk a drop of water nor eaten a grain of rice.
