Crack—
The splendid sword snapped with a crisp sound, and half of the broken blade sprayed into a crevice nearby.
Aber propped himself up with the remaining half of the broken sword, struggled to his feet, and looked towards Wright, who was in tatters from his elegant military uniform and had almost simultaneously risen.
The buildings around had all turned to ruins, and even the sturdy concrete roads had become undulating rubble.
Their gazes met, but this time neither of them immediately made a move.
Both men were at their limits, and with the next move, their fates would be sealed.
Just at that moment, the bright light suddenly dimmed as dark clouds shrouded the sky, and a massive pressure descended from the firmament.
"Evil God?!"
Wright was stunned. He struggled to turn his head to look up at the sky.
Above the mining consortium’s building, a huge dark vortex was slowly forming amidst the spreading dark clouds.
This vortex was like a portal traversing time and space, summoning a vast and mighty being from beyond the endless void, and the entire mining consortium’s building was shrouded in a faint purple glow.
Wright turned back to look at Aber, who was covered in blood, and let out a bitter smile,
"Seems like the Mining Consortium is summoning an Evil God. Is there a clause in your mercenary contract that says if the party involves an Evil God, the contract is automatically terminated?"
He had asked the question partly in jest, knowing Aber was determined to fight to the death. Not understanding why Aber kept helping the Mining Consortium and considering that Aber claimed to adhere to agreements, Wright casually posed the question.
As per Federation customs, powerful Transcendents were often reluctant to associate with Evil Gods, so their contracts usually included a provision that the other party must not involve an Evil God. If an Evil God was involved, the contract would automatically terminate.
Of course, the binding power of contracts was limited.
Although the Federation valued contracts, contracts were not omnipotent. If the benefits gained from breaching a contract exceeded the losses incurred, then it would be common to break the agreement. What often tied the two parties more firmly were deeper matters.
Therefore, Wright was somewhat skeptical about Aber’s "adherence to the agreement." He was merely using the notion as a psychological jab at Aber to gain a mental advantage in the impending battle.
Aber’s strength had somewhat exceeded his expectations, and the next move could be Aber killing him, not the other way around.
However, to his surprise, Aber struggled to open his mouth and hoarsely said, "There is such a clause."
Then he staggered over to the other half of the broken sword stuck in the ground, pulled it out, and placed it back into the damaged scabbard at his waist.
Wright’s eyes stayed fixed on him, seemingly unsure of what he was about to do.
Aber looked at Wright, slowly raised his hands.
Wright was taken aback for a moment, then fetched what remained of a mostly intact walkie-talkie from his tattered uniform, pressing its button.
After a moment,
A squad of the City Defense Army rushed up and fixed sturdy electromagnetic shackles on Aber.
One of the City Defense Army soldiers tried to support Wright, but Wright waved him off.
He turned around, gazed at the Mining Consortium’s building, took a step forward, and then stumbled, falling to the ground.
His vision gradually blurred.
Before he completely lost consciousness, he heard the panicked shouts of the City Defense Army soldiers around him.
A violent gust of wind swept across the sky, as if a giant Mecha had passed by.
Just that kid alone, can he handle it...
He struggled to get up but was once again overwhelmed by weakness.
——
The furious red tide demolished the roof and the surrounding walls, and the winds high above tousled He Ao’s hair, clumped together by blood.
Elijah hovered in the air, cradling the maid Lin in her arms, her ash-gray pupils ’watching’ He Ao.
"If you are waiting for Wright, don’t bother. I found Aber’s sword. It’s imbued with a minor curse that can’t kill a B-Class but can weaken one for some time.
"By sending Wright to intercept Aber, even if Aber got killed by Wright, he wouldn’t have the strength to come and support you anymore."
Elijah’s emotions seemed to have calmed down a bit at this moment, but extreme anger still lingered on her face.
She gently lifted her hand, and the crimson liquid enveloped Lin’s body, sending this dead corpse down the building through the corridor.
"You are quite clever, little guy," her ’gaze’ still fixed on He Ao,
"I can give you the most painful death, and then, after you die, extract your soul and torment it day and night."
"Sorry, I don’t want that kind of experience card."
He Ao grasped his sword, standing amidst the wind.
Meanwhile, at the bottom of the building, a cleaning robot moved a mercenary’s corpse, revealing a corner of a complex pattern.
Then it precisely placed a fragment of skull at that spot.
Dazzling brilliance flared at the corner, with streams of ash white radiance flowing along the edges of the pattern.
In almost an instant, a massive Septagram Array encapsulating the entire building became visible.
This vast brilliance, like a dazzling sun, flashed rapidly, bright enough for He Ao to clearly see from atop the building more than two hundred meters high.
The Septagram Array was something He Ao had drawn while he was clearing out the Mercenary Corps below, taking a full circle around the building to do so.
For such a grand Ritual Array, the drawing materials naturally weren’t all his own blood—there’s no way he could provide so much. Instead, he had used his blood to draw out some of the Transcendent energy within some shortswords, then used these energies to contaminate the clean water to create it.
To prevent the Array from being discovered, he scared away all members of the Mercenary Corps, used their corpses to cover most of the pattern, then blocked all the doors so that anyone descending had only one route through the disguised main entrance.
Because of the corpses strewn around, the ordinary people hiding in the building wouldn’t dare to roam around.
Additionally, he had Eve control some cleaning robots to maintain the Array from the sidelines; the Sacrifices for the ritual were also placed by these Eve-controlled robots.
While Eve might not understand how to set up the Ritual Array, she could remember the positions He Ao specified and place them exactly, as if He Ao had done it himself.
This type of large Ritual Array allows for assistants in the setup, but the more one does themselves, the more sincerity it shows. Using assistants might displease the Divine Being or even bring about divine retribution.
However, considering He Ao’s relationship with his ’good friend,’ there was really no need to worry about divine punishment.
Almost the moment the Ritual Array lit up, Elijah’s red tide surged forward,
"Believer of Knowledge?!!"
Although she couldn’t see the Ritual Array, she could sense the uncomfortable power.
He Ao didn’t reply but dodged the wave of red tide and landed on the edge of the building.
"I have witnessed,"
The massive and dazzling Ritual Array suddenly erupted with even more intense brilliance,
"All things will eventually fade,"
Vast radiance bridged the cosmos, attracting the gaze of a Great Divine Being, while a series of mad and twisted incantations echoed in He Ao’s ears, the immense Wiya stolen from the boundless expanse of time and space.
"Only Truth is infinite."
Endless incomprehensible knowledge flooded into He Ao’s mind, as phantom figures appeared beside him, chanting devoutly in an endless grey world.
"All things will exhaust, Only Truth is infinite."
"All things will exhaust, Only Truth is infinite."
He Ao felt as if he had fallen into a mysterious ocean, facing all the truths of this world.
In the farthest reaches, He Ao felt his consciousness connected to an unfathomable Great Being.
He Ao took a deep breath and quickly sent his ’prayer’ along this connection.
"I’ve heard you seem to really hate the Grim Reaper. Yezola has specially summoned the Grim Reaper today for you to see."
He spoke quickly, fearing the God of Knowledge wouldn’t give him time to react.
Unexpectedly, this time his good friend seemed particularly quiet.
He didn’t even sever the connection with He Ao.
It was like the calm before the storm.
It was almost certain that the God of Knowledge detested the Grim Reaper; the Church couldn’t make decisions on its own, separate from the Divine Being. In a sense, the overall opinion of the Church of the God of Knowledge was an expression of some of the God’s own thoughts.
From another perspective, the God of Knowledge indeed must have had opinions.
Because the ritual incantation of the God of Knowledge was ’Only Truth is infinite,’ while the incantation that Elijah had chanted to summon the Grim Reaper contained the phrase ’(You are) the end of all Truth’.
One claimed Truth was infinite, the other said they were the end of Truth.
If the God of Knowledge had any sanity left, it would be impossible not to be enraged.
After a brief silence of only one or two seconds, a vast grey-white radiance suddenly burst forth from around He Ao, and those phantom figures all transformed into dazzling light, shooting straight towards the heavens.
The pitch-black clouds were instantly ripped open by this brilliant radiance, allowing bright sunlight to briefly shine upon the earth again.
But quickly, that momentary daylight was filled by an immense grey-white light that twisted and undulated like ripples, an overwhelming pressure emerging from behind these ripples, growing stronger and stronger as if something was about to descend from behind them.
It’s coming,
He Ao’s heart sank.
As he had anticipated, his good friend’s temper flared, and this time the deity truly descended.
"How did you do it?"
The surging wave of blood once again assaulted He Ao, which he dodged.
Even Elijah sensed the overwhelming pressure of the descent but knew well that it was a Ritual Array for communication. Although it was unusually large, it was still a Ritual Array for summoning.
She had never heard of summoning a Divine Being without any sacrifices through a Ritual Array.
"Maybe it’s because I have a pretty good relationship with the God of Knowledge," He Ao shrugged off, nimbly dodging her blood wave attack and distancing himself a bit.
At that moment, within the ’ripples’ of the grey-white radiance in the sky, a grey closed eye began to emerge.
Then, this eye turned towards He Ao’s direction, its eyelid gently moved, as if it was about to open.
At this moment, He Ao and Elijah both felt an immense shiver, as if death was about to arrive in the next second.
Both of them paused in their movements.
But quickly, a swirl of grey fog emerged, blocking that massive eye.
It was the power of the Grim Reaper.
The gigantic black vortex began to move toward the greyish-white light, seemingly trying to devour it.
Witnessing this scene, He Ao breathed a sigh of relief.
In the information given to him by Christos, the Grim Reaper never seemed to have made an advent alongside other Divine Beings; this appeared to be a solitary and possessive deity.
As an adversary, He Ao ’summoning’ the God of Knowledge, the Grim Reaper naturally wouldn’t assume that He Ao was calling upon the God of Knowledge for the purpose of suicide.
It was very likely that the Grim Reaper would consider He Ao to be a believer of the God of Knowledge, summoning the deity to compete for the Sacrifices.
The eyes in the sky that were originally "watching" He Ao quivered violently after being stirred by the vortex.
Through a lingering connection with the God of Knowledge, He Ao could feel a surge of intense rage traveling through this link.
The grey brilliance burst open in the pitch-black vortex of cloud and then was swallowed by it.
Two terrifying pressures began to battle in the sky.
In the vicinity, closest to the sky, the Mining Consortium building beneath He Ao shook slightly, revealing faint cracks.
Divine Beings usually would not descend in their true form, opting instead for avatars or projections of themselves.
Such high-level summons were likely to be projections of the deities.
Yet merely the aftermath of the battle between projections of Divine Beings that hadn’t fully descended was causing such a terrifying pressure, leading He Ao to gain further insight into the power of Great Beings.
But now was not the time for him to explore the mysterious world; he looked up at Elijah before him.
With the God of Knowledge keeping the Grim Reaper at bay, the gap between him and Elijah hadn’t closed.
He had to destroy the Grim Reaper’s altar before the two Great Beings determined a victor; otherwise, regardless of the outcome, he would die and be unable to continue his mission.
After the Grim Reaper’s altar was destroyed, the Grim Reaper’s advent would be interrupted due to the loss of coordinates.
This main mission was to investigate the truth and reduce deaths, with the truth being Elijah’s manipulation behind the scenes, and stopping the Grim Reaper’s advent would reduce the deaths.
The final step of the mission should then be completed.
Just now, Elijah used this crimson liquid to construct the altar, but now she was manipulating the liquid to attack He Ao instead of maintaining the shape of the altar.
The altar couldn’t have disappeared.
So, there was only one possibility, the altar was her body, and the Eye of Truth constructed earlier was just to meet the requirements of the ritual initiation.
All paths led back to one conclusion, kill Elijah.
At this moment, Elijah seemed to understand something as well. She looked at He Ao and said,
"You are indeed very smart, but you have no way to defeat me.
"Even if you still worship other deities, two Divine Beings’ altars cannot overlap. You have communicated with the God of Knowledge, so you cannot connect with other deities."
The crimson tide rushed towards He Ao like a viscous limb in an instant,
"Without the help of a deity, what can you use to defeat me? I enjoy watching you struggle with all your might. The more you struggle now, the more painful your death will be. I will crush your soul to offer a Sacrifice to Lin."
