Chapter 380: Chapter 380: I Follow the Rules and Laws (Two in One)

The thirty-second one.

He Ao pulled out his short sword, and a red radiance spilled from the monster’s corpse, merging into the blade.

At this moment, the red glow clinging to the sword was so dense that it seemed almost to form a substantial viscous liquid.

Wielding the sword, He Ao could hear the faint, complex whispers echoing in his ears, as if he were once again standing before the corpse of that dead Divine Being.

He sheathed his sword, looked at the motorcycle beside him, and then at the agent who was leaning on it, retching, "Where’s the next one?"

"Ugh—"

The agent retched twice more, feeling as though he was standing on cotton, dizzy, using the motorcycle for support as he stood up.

A bead of clear liquid hung from the corner of his mouth. It wasn’t that he wanted to retch; there was simply nothing left in his stomach to throw up anymore, nothing left to come out.

After speeding through the better part of the night, he now felt his tolerance increasing rapidly; he wasn’t as dizzy anymore, though he still needed to vomit out of inertia whenever they stopped.

Hearing He Ao’s question, he struggled to lift his hand, glanced at his wristband, "There are no more, there haven’t been any for an hour."

He looked at the man before him with a mask.

Judging by the man’s skin on his hands and his voice, he wasn’t old, yet his strength far exceeded the agent’s imagination.

At the beginning, the man would observe the terrain and get familiar with the monsters’ moves before killing them. As time went on, he would almost instantly finish them off. The agent hadn’t even finished retching before getting back in the car to go to the next location to retch again.

The night’s work was tedious but also thrilling. In just a few hours, the Federal Bureau of Investigation agent had witnessed all manner of twisted monsters and visited many places in the city he’d never been to since his arrival.

"No more, huh."

He Ao glanced at the monster corpse behind him.

At first, he needed to get used to these monsters’ tactics, but as he continued to hunt, he gradually identified their common traits—covert, mutated, with a certain wild frenzy.

Though the monsters varied in shape, their fighting style had similarities. He didn’t know if they were influenced by the dead Divine Being, but they all tended to be reckless.

He Ao felt that the corpse of the Divine Being was most likely that of the battered-to-death War God, the most intuitive evidence being their brainless sacrifice-driven tactics.

Since becoming a ’warrior’, He Ao felt that he was becoming increasingly rash as well.

However, he was still able to control his emotions, calmly think through battle strategies, like dealing with these monsters. Later on, he basically used their impulsive fighting methods against them, a close-range taunt followed by a swing of his sword to destroy them in one move and then leave.

He Ao looked around once again.

The sky had begun to lighten with the first glimmers of dawn.

Given the monsters’ impulsive methods, it would have been easy for the Federal Bureau of Investigation to track them down.

If the Federal Bureau of Investigation hadn’t found any, it likely meant there really were none left.

Among the thirty-plus monsters, there were seven D-levels, a dozen or so E-levels, and even the weakest were F-level.

One D-level had been on the verge of ’evolving’ into a C-level by the time He Ao arrived.

These monsters lacked self-awareness; they were mere puppets of the suspected War God-like dead Divine Being, drawing their power directly from the Divine Power, so they had no restrictions on leveling up like ordinary Transcendents.

The only limit to their power was how many ’sacrifices’ they could collect for the War God’s corpse.

He Ao didn’t know what sort of operating mechanism these Evil Gods had, but it was clear that they had a degree of craving for flesh and Soul.

It seemed they could transform these flesh and souls to some extent into their own ’power’.

The monsters’ power perhaps essentially stemmed from the ’sacrifices’ they offered.

These monsters, created by the Divine Power, were much more troublesome than He Ao had initially anticipated. Should one of these monsters truly give rise to a C-level, the power of the Federal Bureau of Investigation in Rock City alone would probably be insufficient to deal with them.

If these monsters ravaged the city, they were likely to cause even greater chaos.

By that time, the Mayor would redirect the conflicts towards the miners and the Miners’ Mutual Aid Association, making the opposition within Rock City even more acute.

Perhaps the mastermind behind creating these monsters had some kind of connection with the Mayor and the Mining Consortium.

He Ao rubbed his forehead and waved at the agent, "You return to your unit."

Then he took steps towards the end of the street.

Now that the matter with the monster had been resolved, it was time to execute the next step in the plan.

"Ah?"

The agent was stunned.

Then he saw He Ao’s figure gradually disappearing.

He hurriedly called out, "Um, can I help you with anything? Or join you? I’m capable of doing a lot, and my scores were pretty good during training."

What replied to him was only the sound of footsteps growing fainter until they gradually vanished.

"Sigh——"

As the figure gradually disappeared into the dimly lit night, the agent leaned against his motorcycle and let out a long sigh.

Just then, something black and white and shifting colors flew towards him from the darkness.

When it appeared from the night sky, it moved swiftly, then slowed midway, and finally landed smoothly in front of the agent.

The person who had thrown this thing had a masterful control over the force.

Even the instructors at the headquarters of the Federal Bureau of Investigation could not manage such an effortless display of strength.

While the agent was astounded inside, his hands did not forget to catch the object that had flown towards him,

It was a mask.

A mask with a strange smile, mingling light and darkness.

——

At nine o’clock in the morning, in a cafe just outside the West City gates.

An attractive young man in a large coat and wearing a bowler hat was sitting at the farthest booth, looking down and flipping through a simple book.

"Here’s your coffee."

A waitress wearing flesh-colored tights and a blue skirt set the coffee in front of the young man.

"Thank you."

He Ao nodded gently.

In a moment, the girl caught a glimpse of half of the young man’s profile. She took a deep breath, hugging the coffee tray to her chest,

"If there’s anything you need, feel free to let me know at any time."

"Okay, thank you,"

He Ao nodded lightly and continued to peruse the book in his hands.

The girl held her breath and returned to the counter with the tray.

The cashier at the counter was a young woman with golden wavy hair. She looked at the approaching girl, leaned forward with a smile, and asked, "How is it?"

Only then did the girl let out a long sigh of relief, glanced at the young man in the coat in the corner, then turned to the smiling cashier with a flushed face, "So handsome, I didn’t see the whole picture, but he’s really handsome."

"Hahaha," the cashier laughed heartily. She pointed to her own eyes, "See, I didn’t lie to you, did I? You have to trust my eye for beauty. Handsome or not, I don’t just look at the face; a glance at someone’s actions and figure, and I understand it all."

As she spoke, she leaned on the cashier counter, gesturing with her eyes for the waitress to look at the young man in the corner, "Look at him, shoulders level and back straight, he must have trained before. When he takes off that coat, I bet it’s all rows and rows of muscles."

As she was speaking, the waitress seemed to hear the sound of someone swallowing. She looked towards the cashier sister beside her.

The cashier wiped the corner of her mouth and continued, "You young girls only care about whether a guy is handsome, but we who are a bit older understand that it’s the ones with the bodies like that who are the real deal.

Take, for instance, picking someone up in that pose, if you don’t have good core strength, you can’t play around for long. You’ll feel weak after a short while, not to mention other positions like hanging upside down..."

"Sister, what are you talking about?"

The waitress’s face turned red, and she put away the tray, "I’m going to wash the dishes now."

"Ah, young girls are always so shy."

The cashier shook her head; looking at the young man in the corner, in fact, when he had come in earlier, she had caught a glimpse of his profile. It looked familiar, but she couldn’t remember where she had seen him before.

Soon, her thoughts drifted to how she might approach him to ask for his contact information.

Just then, a soft sound of footsteps came from the café’s entrance.

An attractive, middle-aged man with short brown hair and a thin mustache above his upper lip, who appeared only to be in his forties, walked in with an upright posture.

He glanced around and quickly spotted the young man sitting in the corner.

"A black coffee."

The middle-aged man laid down a bill and spoke softly; his voice was gentle and magnetic.

The cashier paused upon hearing it and, by the time she came to her senses, the middle-aged man had already walked over to the young man in the windbreaker sitting in the corner.

In a flurry, the cashier collected the money from the counter and took a few deep breaths, "Is today a convention for handsome men or something?"

······

"Hello."

The middle-aged man sat down across from the young man.

"Hello."

Hearing his voice, He Ao looked up, saw the man, and smiled.

"How’s the old foreman been lately?"

The middle-aged man leaned back in the sofa seat and asked softly.

"Not so good," He Ao shrugged, "He said he felt like he was about to die, otherwise he wouldn’t have come to me."

"You’re quite an interesting kid," the middle-aged man said with a smile on his face, "In these chaotic times, it’s reasonable for someone in the eye of the storm like the old foreman to say he feels close to death."

At that moment, the waitress brought over the coffee. The young man nodded gently in thanks, waiting for her to leave before picking up the coffee, and looked at He Ao, "So, why did you come to see me today? If you’re here to ask me to help you go against the mayor, then this meeting should end here."

"I just heard that the most combat-ready 1083rd Brigade under the 108th Division, responsible for garrisoning South City, has already thrown in with the Mining Consortium."

He Ao said quietly.

"Where did you hear that?"

The middle-aged man’s facial expression stiffened.

"Isn’t it clear from this magazine?" He Ao placed the small book he was holding on the table in front of the middle-aged man,

"The bonuses and allowances for the 1083rd Brigade that were delayed due to procedural issues have already been fully distributed, while the bonuses for the 1081st and 1082nd Brigades are still stuck in the process.

"The mayor stated that he will resolve the procedural issues as quickly as possible to distribute the overdue bonuses into the hands of every soldier, ensuring that the soldiers besieging the city don’t shed blood and sweat in vain."

In the well-connected Federation, paper magazines have become quite rare, with most people preferring to get their information from online forums or short video apps.

But a portion of the city’s elite class still subscribes to a number of print magazines, to obtain a sense of distinction from the common workers and a sense of identity.

Thus, a number of print magazines have survived.

In order to live up to this special sense of identity, these magazines select some more ’upper-class’ information to present, such as the city government’s policies, news from the Federation, and various secret intelligence from covert consortiums.

In fact, all of this information can be found on the internet, but the editors of these magazines have provided some in-depth processing and commentary.

Of course, He Ao hadn’t simply bought a magazine and stumbled upon such explosive news.

He first had Eve search through the entire Rock City’s network information, confirming various intelligence on Division Commander Wright of the 108th, then specifically purchased magazines related to the intelligence gathered.

Before coming here, He Ao had already roughly determined Division Commander Wright’s character, law-abiding, knowledgeable and reasonable, even somewhat old-fashioned. Although dissatisfied with the current Mayor’s actions, he still drastically restrained himself to prevent his City Defense Army from clashing with the city hall.

Although he didn’t like the Mayor and the cabinet formed by the Mayor, he respected the system set up by the founders of the Federation, respected the position of Mayor, and was willing to obey the Mayor’s orders under reasonable and lawful demands.

"It seems you’ve put quite a bit of thought into this before coming over,"

The middle-aged man said with a smile as he took a sip of coffee, set down his cup, and didn’t look at the magazine. It wasn’t that easy to just buy a magazine that would have the content to address his spoken words.

Unless the other party had investigated and researched him carefully, knowing his possible replies, and then specifically went to purchase the corresponding magazines.

This middle-aged man was indeed Division Commander Wright of the 108th, who had received a call from He Ao that morning and had agreed to meet here.

This café was quite old, not doing very well, with no cameras within and no cameras outside pointing at the café’s entrance.

"After all, I am communicating with an experienced veteran like Division Commander Wright."

He Ao put the magazine away.

Wright was no fool; guessing He Ao’s behind-the-scenes actions through the magazine was not difficult.

"Then you must also know that I would not be willing to engage in illegal and disorderly acts,"

Wright said, looking at He Ao.

His gentle gaze became sharp in an instant, and the smile that was like a spring breeze also disappeared in a split second.

For a moment, He Ao felt a piercing, icy pressure bearing down on him, watching Wright as if he were watching a fierce lion many times his size.

At this moment, the only thought in He Ao’s mind was, ’Make a wrong move, and I die.’

Yet he didn’t care about that thought at all. He folded up the magazine in his hands as if nothing had happened and lightly chuckled,

"But your enemies seem to not be planning to follow the rules. The 1083rd Regiment is just the first,

"I believe you wouldn’t think that the Mining Consortium would simply stop there. They are showing restraint and even listening to your opinions now because of your strength and the warriors of the 108th.

"If one day the warriors of the 108th no longer stand behind you, do you think they’ll still ’respect’ your beliefs?"

"Interesting,"

Wright took a sip of coffee, the oppressive aura that had enveloped He Ao suddenly dissipated, and the genial smile returned to the face of the seemingly kind and jade-like general,

"The Old Foreman is lucky to have you as his successor. So, what do you want to do?"

"Of course, I wouldn’t ask the General to do anything illegal or disorderly,"

He Ao said calmly, gazing at Wright, "In fact, I am someone who abides by the rules and the law as well."

In that moment, the smile on Wright’s face almost broke.

Your warrant is still hanging on the official website of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, you know.

However, in the end, he maintained his smile, remaining in a listening posture,
