"Elijah, why are you here?"
The brown-curled Aber didn’t look at anyone else but fixed his gaze on the woman in the black dress who was slowly being pushed out.
"Why can’t I be here?"
Elijah leaned against the back of her wheelchair, her gaze shifting to look at Aber.
A blind woman + a cripple?
Yates peeked out from behind Aber.
Very soon, he was captivated by Elijah’s beauty, finding her even more attractive than the most beautiful dancer he had seen in Milani—the cold, noble features paired with the subtly sensual black veil created an unusual contrast.
Such beauty, yet blind and lame—truly a case of Heaven envying a beauty.
But such imperfections added a vulnerability to the beautiful woman that wasn’t naturally hers, inevitably stirring a protective urge in others.
Vulnerable yet noble, sensual yet abstinent.
To think such a creature existed in this world, Yates felt a flame rising from his belly, which he forcefully suppressed.
He swallowed hard, pushing down the desire in his heart, and leaned in close to Aber to whisper, "Captain, why don’t we just break in? That Old Foreman is full of tricks; there might be some special escape route hidden. If we’re even a little slow, they’ll all have fled."
Aber’s brow furrowed once more.
Yates was already close to him, and now leaned in so much so that he was almost against Aber’s back.
Although he wasn’t worried about this young man attacking him—such a close distance would mean Yates’ own death if he tried—it wasn’t something Aber was accustomed to, feeling a man pressed against his back, especially sensing that the man was somewhat feverish.
Yates was even more troublesome to him than seeing Elijah emerge from the church.
At this moment, the maid pushing Elijah also saw Yates’ movement as he leaned on Aber.
She slightly furrowed her brows and shifted her eyes away.
Elijah noticed the maid’s subtle gesture, but since she couldn’t see anything, she could only tilt her head in confusion, planning to ask the maid about it afterward.
Aber’s brow wrinkled even more tightly.
But he couldn’t explain anything in public since the traitor Yates was highly regarded by the mayor.
To eat the king’s grain, one should serve the king’s cause.
Aber couldn’t just casually toss Yates out in cold blood in public either.
His body shuddered slightly, shaking off Yates, who instinctively stepped back half a step, widening the gap between them.
Yet, this distance was still within his protective range.
He cleared his throat as if nothing had happened and said in a deep voice, "Elijah is a B-level Transcendent whose ability is unknown, but all who have seen her in action are dead. If you want to charge in, you can do so now."
Hearing this, Yates shrank back, and even the flames in his heart were somewhat extinguished. Although he was prone to lust, he was not purely led by desire, knowing well whom he could touch and whom he could not.
"Captain, can you defeat her?"
He took a half step forward, trying to get close to Aber again, but Aber stealthily evaded, maintaining the half-step distance.
"No certainty."
Aber’s words were candid—he indeed had no assurance when facing an enemy whose Talent Sequence was unknown, which was very dangerous.
"But if we delay any longer, the thugs inside will have escaped."
Yates sounded somewhat anxious.
At this point, he was the most anxious one in the room. If the Old Foreman and the core members of the Miners’ Mutual Aid Association got away, the others might not care, returning to their own homes, but as the traitor, he would definitely be hunted down.
And Aber couldn’t protect him forever, nor did he have such clout.
So, being able to achieve a decisive victory here, completely annihilating the core organization of the Miners’ Mutual Aid Association, was the most ideal state for her.
"Don’t rush,"
whispered Captain Aber, as the soldiers behind him were still orderly completing their actions, thoroughly surrounding the church.
He looked up at Elijah in front of him, "No wonder the Miners’ Mutual Aid Association can never be eradicated and always resurges from the ashes. It turns out it’s because they are your people, Elijah."
"I don’t know what Miners’ Mutual Aid Association you’re talking about," Elijah’s cold voice rang out,
"This is my dwelling, Aber. You’re not a Rock City police officer, nor an agent of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. You don’t have a search warrant. You have no right to trespass on my property with your men. I have the right to kill any thug who intrudes."
Aber’s expression darkened.
Indeed, he had no right to search. They had managed to get a search warrant, but it could only authorize the City Defense Army to enter.
It was very possible that inside the Miners’ Mutual Aid Association there was a top C-level Transcendent who could single-handedly confront nine Mecha and another C-level Transcendent. For these City Defense Army members to go in was akin to sending each of them on a one-way trip.
It was impossible for the strong individual inside to abide by the law and not proactively kill them just because they had a legal search warrant.
Moreover, Aber couldn’t be sure whether Elijah would take action or not.
If the person inside wasn’t a B-level Transcendent like Elijah but another ordinary person, Aber would have barged in directly.
For trespassing on private property like this, at worst the person could sue later. The Mining Consortium had a huge team of lawyers capable of making perfect defense arguments. If all else failed, they could prolong the case for years, continuously appealing and delaying until the person was bankrupt and dare not sue any further.
Of course, all this was predicated on the assumption that an ordinary person incapable of resisting the Mercenary Corps and the City Defense Army would emerge from the church and wouldn’t be able to immediately kill the intruders.
But Elijah.
She genuinely had the capability to kill the trespassers and do it legally and without damaging her reputation.
The situation fell into a brief stalemate.
Aber weighed his options rapidly in his mind.
The Miners’ Mutual Aid Association didn’t seem to be under Elijah’s control. Their actions didn’t align with the interests of Elijah’s faction, who represented the small factory owners and merchants of Rock City. These people’s ’contributions’ pooled together, sustaining Elijah’s party’s election funds.
They also did not favor the purely grassroots organization like the Miners’ Mutual Aid Association.
Thinking from this perspective, even if there was indeed a connection between the Miners’ Mutual Aid Association and Elijah, she couldn’t entirely control the association. It was possible that their relationship was relatively independent.
Then, it was unlikely that Elijah would fight to the death for this unruly organization.
So they could attempt a forced assault.
Thoughts raced through his mind.
Just as Aber was about to make a decision to attack, a breathless call suddenly came from the intercom on his chest, "Captain, we’ve spotted the targets and others at the surveilled emergency exit. There are many of them, and they’re moving fast; we’re about to lose them."
"How many people?" Aber frowned, picking up the intercom, "First squad, take the shortcut and intercept them ahead."
"Can’t tell, it’s like they’re all here, Captain, we’re losing them."
A hoarse voice came through the intercom.
Aber furrowed his brow, feeling something was amiss, but knowing the importance of speed, he picked up the intercom, "Second squad, you go too."
The majority of the Mercenary Corps behind him quickly left, reducing the sense of oppression significantly.
"Captain, people have been discovered in that secret passage? And many of them? The Old Foreman really didn’t prepare another passage?"
Yates was close by and naturally heard the conversation from the intercom. Excitement flickered in his eyes, "Why don’t we just go catch the Old Foreman?"
"Don’t rush, something seems off," said Aber with a frown, "The timing of their appearance is too peculiar, and they still used the original secret passage even though they know you, the traitor, are here. Don’t rush; the top C-level hasn’t shown himself yet."
Yates, originally ready to dash out, halted abruptly upon seeing Aber motionless.
He heard Aber calling him a traitor, and his expression turned somewhat ugly, but he said nothing. After all, he still needed Aber’s protection.
After a while, a new voice came through the intercom, "Captain, they know the terrain too well, too nimble; we can’t keep up. We need backup."
"Not even one?"
Captain Aber asked in a low voice.
"Not even one."
The person on the other end of the radio responded.
Captain Aber’s face darkened like water; he hadn’t sent direct support this time, but instead quickly connected with several team and squad leaders, receiving almost the same answers from them.
Finally, after some contemplation, he sent a large team to provide support and had all the remaining vehicles of the Mercenary Corps and the City Defense Army driven away.
Now, most of the people who had surrounded the area had left.
Yates watched the dwindling crowd around him and started to feel uneasy, "We must capture these rioters."
Captain Aber gave Yates a glance but didn’t speak; he once again raised his head and looked at Elijah standing at the church entrance.
He grasped the sword at his waist and took a step forward, "Come, let’s go in and have a look."
Yates, who was behind him, was taken aback but didn’t dare stray from his superior and hastily followed.
With each step Captain Aber took, the pressure emanating from him grew heavier, becoming more and more intense; he hadn’t even reached the church entrance yet.
The maid’s complexion turned somewhat pale, seemingly having some difficulty breathing, but she was still holding on.
Yates noticed how fragile the proud maid looked now and suddenly realized that this very maid had been giving him disdainful glances as if she was looking at trash.
Now, seeing the maid being pressured to such a state by only a few steps from Captain Aber, she didn’t seem so strong.
The thought of confronting B-level Transcendent Elijah was daunting, but Elijah’s maid seemed a bit more approachable in comparison.
However, ever since he reached C-level, he had grown fond of less... warm people; perhaps the maid would look even more beautiful when she’s icy cold.
Yates’ gaze wandered and suddenly stopped at a corner in the distance, where the figure of a person was standing in the shadows, giving him a smile.
He swiftly took out a Gauss Pistol from his pocket and aimed it at the figure, while simultaneously reaching out to pull at Captain Aber beside him.
In that moment, he felt his train of thought pause momentarily.
Meanwhile, all of Captain Aber’s attention was on Elijah in front of him.
"Captain Aber, what are you trying to do?"
Elijah’s cool voice slightly rose in pitch, and as it sounded, the maid instantly recovered herself, her ample chest heaving up and down as she took deep breaths.
"Miss Elijah, I’m just paying a visit to your church," Captain Aber glanced at Elijah and took another step forward, his terrifying pressure enveloping the surroundings, seemingly squeezing out fine cracks in the solid church walls, "I’ll just take a look and leave."
Yates, standing behind him, remained oblivious, as Captain Aber silently controlled the pressure to bypass Yates.
Elijah’s eyes, covered by a black veil, watched Captain Aber, "I’m not in the mood to entertain guests today, Captain Aber, please leave."
Her voice, like the cold wind of the silent night, brought forth a chill even under the bright sunlight, dispelling the pressure exerted by Captain Aber as they faced each other ’eye to eye’.
The sun hung high in the sky, and the church’s shadow created a long line between Captain Aber and Elijah.
Captain Aber slowly raised his foot, stepping forward.
At that moment, a sudden change occurred!
Captain Aber swiftly turned his head to the side, and under the bright sunlight, a red glow streaked across the sky, passing right above his head.
That hidden C-level!
Captain Aber’s foot hovered in mid-air.
He looked up and suddenly said, "Cage!"
A massive transparent cage materialized out of nowhere, ready to trap the red light within it in an instant.
Captain Aber had made a combat prediction, positioning the cage just ahead of where the red light would land; the attacker would inevitably fall into the cage and be trapped.
However, the red light merely grazed the edge of the cage and even stepped on the cage hovering in the air to borrow strength, leaping to the side.
The other party did not intend to attack him.
Captain Aber instantly realized that if the target wasn’t him, then it could only be...
He hastily reached out to pull Yates, who was standing beside him.
But it was already too late. Yates had grasped the Gauss Pistol in his hand and aimed at the figure in the sky, "Die!!!"
However, before he could pull the trigger, a handful of pebbles scattered down from the sky.
The pebbles, like high-speed bullets, instantly penetrated his already weak body, shattered his organs, and the immense impact involuntarily sent him toppling backward.
The stones meticulously damaged his body, yet they did not kill him instantly.
He lay on the ground in agony, struggling to breathe.
Blood poured continuously from his body and throat; with trembling hands, he reached up and looked at Captain Aber, "Save me... gurgle... save me..."
Captain Aber didn’t even glance at him and lifted his foot to chase after the red light.
At that moment, someone was faster than Captain Aber. A cold breath stalled his movements, followed by a woman’s chilly voice, "Captain Aber, weren’t you going to sit in my church? I’m in the mood now."
In that brief obstruction, the red light had already vanished without a trace.
Captain Aber turned around, his face dark as he glanced at Elijah. He knew that if Elijah dared to invite him herself, it meant there were no issues inside.
He snorted coldly and walked back, addressing the approaching head of the Mercenary Corps, "Chase him, he can’t have gone far."
Elijah looked in the direction of the starting car’s sound, then turned back toward the direction where the red light had disappeared and sighed softly, "What a pity..."
The maid helped her into the church.
The people around slowly dispersed.
Yates lay alone on the church’s front platform, blankly gazing at the bright sky.
Blood continued to flow from his shattered body, waves of pain assaulting his mind.
It seemed like a long time since he had felt such pain.
When was the last time?
When he was desperately covering the retreat of his comrades from the Miners’ Mutual Aid Association.
Back then, Watson was bleeding from the chest, carrying him on his back, struggling to move forward through deep snow.
Ellen stood behind them, continuously shooting to cover their retreat.
The decrepit Old Foreman hunched his back, leading the way in front.
As their pursuers drew ever closer, he had wanted to tell Watson to let him down several times, but Watson only held him tighter.
Ellen would call him a fool, an asshole, brainless, always impulsive, but he would resolutely stand behind him, intercepting the pursuers’ bullets.
He stretched out his hand, trying to grasp that snowy night from his memory, but could not catch it.
The clear sky was gradually covered by clouds, and a cold breeze blew across the firmament, stirring up faint snowflakes.
A municipal cleaning vehicle stopped, and two men dressed in sanitation worker uniforms stepped down from the truck, picked up the body that had frozen stiff in front of the church door, and threw it into the back of the truck filled with corpses.
The driver rubbed his hands together, exhaled a puff of smoke, and placed a cigarette in his mouth.
Accompanied by the flickering sparks, the vehicle slowly disappeared into the hazy snowflakes.
——
"Thank you."
He Ao walked out of a small clothing store, having changed into a newly bought overcoat and donning a bowler hat, brushed off the snowflakes from his shoulders, and vanished into the bustling market.
