Hu Wen had not been with Daybreak for long, at least the last time Yang De saw him and documented it in the Research Institute’s intelligence, there was no clear record of him siding with Daybreak.
So it wasn’t just the Research Institute that feared He Ao might set an ambush, Daybreak also feared He Ao would defect to the Research Institute, setting up a trap for them.
Under such suspicion, Daybreak could not possibly send someone particularly powerful.
Noding had once lived here; he knew the area well and had interacted with people like Zuo Nuo who had no Transcendent powers, proving his own strength was not formidable. He was the best candidate.
Therefore, He Ao wasn’t surprised by Noding’s arrival.
He Ao found a water jug in the corner, and a resident had brought it over that morning; He Ao had saved his life the night before from the hands of a violent, murderous Rogue Soldier.
Although he did not come up to thank He Ao last night, this morning he sneakily brought over fresh water and food.
And then he ran into four others who had also come to deliver breakfast.
He Ao accepted their kindness, gave them money, and then told them not to come again, and that no one else should come either.
The people of this town were still afraid of He Ao, but that did not stop them from recognizing their savior; fear and gratitude sometimes were not contradictory.
"What do you really want?"
Noding gave He Ao a feeling similar to that of a Speech Master; his Talent Sequences must be similar to, or the same as, those of a Speech Master, related to language and intelligence.
It’s just that Speech Masters tend to passively and indiscriminately gather information, while Noding seemed more proactive and purposeful.
"Who sent you?"
He Ao smiled as he poured himself a cup of water.
Noding’s movements hesitated.
The deeper meaning of He Ao’s question was, ’You’re not qualified to talk to me; tell me the person behind you.’
"The Secret Art Mage is the person in charge over here right now," Noding said softly.
He didn’t dare to show anger in front of He Ao.
He knew that for the man before him, killing was as normal as drinking water.
"What I mean is,"
He Ao leisurely poured water, watching the clear stream burst from the mouth of the jug, cutting an arc through the air to fall into the cup, "who is behind you, who stands behind Alano."
"I don’t understand what you’re talking about."
Noding’s expression seemed to change in an instant, but it was so swift, He Ao, who hadn’t activated his Super Memory, almost missed it.
"Let’s be more specific," He Ao glanced at him, "the person who paid to have me attack the Research Institute, who is he?"
In the residual memories of Hu Wen that He Ao took over, although most of the information was lost, there were still some key pieces of information left.
For instance, Hu Wen was not actually in Alano but was nearby. After joining Daybreak, he was always in a state of detachment, obeying instructions but not proclamations.
Daybreak didn’t have much of a way to manage this C-level ’Ruthless Bandit,’ able to lure him only with the potential for profit.
For example, for this attack on the Research Institute, Daybreak promised Hu Wen a reward of ten million Central Earth currency and the priority to allocate any Transcendent items he looted.
But there are actually factions within Daybreak.
According to the data He Ao reviewed from the Research Institute, there are two B-level individuals in Daybreak.
One is the Leader of Daybreak, the founder of Daybreak, who represents the idealistic faction within, an Elderly proponent, committed to creating a perfectly ordered Transcendent nation.
One was an international fugitive who joined Daybreak in its later stages, a man named Jeno. He agreed with Daybreak’s ideology, but compared to realizing ideals, he was more passionate about creating violence and seizing benefits.
International criminals or thugs like Hu Wen, who joined Daybreak later, all fell under his command.
Most of Daybreak’s infamy was generated by his people.
By contrast, the Leader of Daybreak tended to prefer achieving goals with minimal casualties and maintaining order.
With markedly different personalities, why the Leader of Daybreak took Jeno in originally is now beyond verification, but looking through the Research Institute’s data, the two had almost no interaction prior to this.
If one must point out a commonality between the two, it would be that both were straightforward and direct in their dealings, openly admitting to their actions, good or bad, without resorting to much skulking or evading.
And, judging by the current state of Daybreak within Alano, gathering such a vast amount of resources and attacking the Research Institute, it would be impossible without a B-level behind them.
Of course, the interesting thing is, Daybreak in Alano currently operates in a style reminiscent of both the Leader’s idealism and Jeno’s ruthlessness.
In fact, it appeared as though these two never cooperated.
He Ao raised his head and smiled at the Noding in front of him,
as if waiting for his response.
Under He Ao’s gaze, Noding felt immense pressure, clenched his fist slightly, took a deep breath, "Our leader’s behind us, everything Daybreak did in Alano was arranged by the Leader. Do you want to go against the Leader?"
"Oh."
He Ao replied, then glanced at the time and slowly got up, "It’s almost eleven, are you hungry? Let’s have something to eat."
Noding looked at He Ao with some suspicion, unable to guess what He Ao was planning.
But he dared not disobey He Ao’s words, and could only follow behind him.
As the minutes ticked by, Noding found himself sitting at the dining table with He Ao.
The staple food of Alano was cassava, an easy-to-grow plant that sustains most of its residents living amid chaos.
Lunch was prepared by a local chef: a portion of meat soup, two servings of roasted cassava, and two ham sandwiches.
Flour in Alano was mostly imported from the Tia Empire, scarce and expensive. Similarly, the prices of butter and ham were not cheap, so those who could place sandwiches on the dining table were generally well-off.
This little town was prosperous; had He Ao chosen a poorer, more remote town, maybe their lunch would have included only cassava.
The Alano way of eating roasted cassava is to bake the white flesh of the cassava until it’s soft and glistening, then pour meat soup over it. The roasted cassava would absorb the moisture of the soup, then sprinkled with salt and mashed garlic, finished off with a squeeze of lemon juice.
The taste wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t particularly good either. Compared to what most people in Alano could afford, though, such a meal was a luxury only the wealthy could enjoy.
The meal wasn’t large, and by the time He Ao methodically finished his food, it was half past eleven.
He Ao stood up straight, glanced across the table, and noticed that Noding’s bowl still had a lot of sandwiches and cassava left.
Apparently he didn’t have much of an appetite.
Just then, a sudden commotion came from outside the window and door.
Noding seemed drawn to the noise, looking toward the door.
At that moment, He Ao had already walked towards the door, "We have visitors."
Noding glanced at the food in his bowl, slowly got up, and followed He Ao’s footsteps.
It was nearing noon when He Ao walked out the door, and the pirates guarding the doorway had all fallen.
Standing at the doorway was a man in a short-sleeved shirt, carrying an axe as wide as a man, burly and muscular, seemingly weighing over two hundred pounds, with thick brown curly hair.
The man, upon seeing He Ao and Noding emerge, swept his gaze over them, finally resting on He Ao, and sneered, "So you’re Hu Wen?"
"Yes."
He Ao nodded calmly.
"Be careful, this is a ’Moonlight’ Berserker," Noding quickly warned. Regardless, ’Hu Wen’ was now indeed a person of Daybreak,
"The headquarters of ’Moonlight’ in Alano is nearby, and this ’Berserker’ is responsible for maintaining the interests of the Tia Empire in Alano, eliminating those Transcendents who obstruct the Tia Empire.
Balan had once sparred with him and was injured by his third move. Since then, he never dared to defy the Tia Empire again. This man does not pull his punches—none of his targets have ever survived... If he is proactively seeking you out, it’s likely he considers you his next target."
As he spoke, Noding paused, looking at He Ao, "How did you offend the Tia Empire?"
He opened his mouth, seemingly wanting to offer a word of advice to He Ao, but ultimately gave up.
He was the weakest present. If he angered He Ao, he’d be the first to die.
After thinking for a moment, he didn’t dwell on this issue. Regardless, he was now allied with He Ao, and if He Ao truly were to be killed by the Berserker, with the Berserker’s merciless nature, it wouldn’t be out of the question for him to kill Noding as well.
So, he quickly added, "The Berserker’s ability allows him to enter a frenzied state, instantly increasing his combat power by fivefold, and while in this state, his combat power will continue growing over time, reaching more than ten times his original strength.
It’s said that in his full Berserker state, he can even withstand attacks from B-level adversaries. He is the strongest below B-level throughout the entire Tia Empire, and he has also killed the most C-level Transcendents on record, with five C-level deaths under his belt."
In the main world, Transcendents are scarce; Daybreak has only a dozen or so C-levels. A single C-level could typically dominate a region. To have killed five C-levels was indeed a boast worthy feat.
From the moment Noding started describing the power of the Berserker, the Berserker himself hadn’t moved.
He stood with his arms crossed a short distance in front of He Ao, neither advancing nor retreating, merely squinting his eyes, smiling as he listened to Noding speak.
Only after Noding finished speaking did he burst into laughter, waving his hand, "That kid over there, I really like people like you, who speak so pleasantly. You better stay out of the way later, lest I accidentally kill you when I make my move."
"When he is fully enraged, his eyes will turn a pure yellow. Anyway, be careful. The best time to defeat him is when he just starts raging, when his strength hasn’t peaked yet. Be cautious,"
Noding warned again.
"Thank you."
He Ao nodded lightly.
"That’s all I can do to help you,"
Noding said softly, then without turning back, he quickly ran away.
Once he was far enough away, the Berserker turned his gaze to He Ao, "Kid, I heard you’re really arrogant, huh? Daring to threaten the empire?"
He took his huge axe from his back, holding it in his hand.
The giant axe combined with his burly figure was like a small hill, looking savage and dangerous under the sunlight.
He Ao’s eyes fell on the giant axe.
It seemed the axe originally was not an axe head at all.
It appeared to be a shard that had separated from a giant blade, fastened onto a rusted iron rod with some hinges and steel cables, forming a rough-looking giant axe.
It looked like something retrieved from ruins.
"Kid, call me grandpa, and grandpa might spare your dog life,"
the Berserker laughed, strands of yellow light spreading from the center of his pupils, beginning to dye his brown irises.
His aura instantly amplified manifold, the oppressive feeling growing tremendously, turning from a small hill into a mountain range that blocked out the sun.
Residents who had been peering out from the surrounding streets quickly retracted their heads in fear and locked their doors and windows.
"Kid, take this axe from grandpa!"
The broad axe came cleaving down, blotting out the sky and earth.
He Ao’s figure flashed, disappearing from the original spot and reappearing at another point on the street.
The giant axe swung past the gate, slicing through the metal iron doors and the walls built of cement and red bricks as though they were tofu, shearing them apart and sending countless fragments flying.
The axe was a fine one indeed.
From the way the Berserker wielded the axe and the sound of it cutting through the air, it weighed at least a thousand kilograms.
"Hahaha, aren’t you quite the wild one, lad?"
The Berserker laughed heartily as he watched He Ao dodge.
Though this fellow appeared reckless, he was not truly so; with that swing of his axe, he had kept his body hidden behind it to the greatest extent, avoiding any chance of a sneak attack from He Ao.
He Ao heard his laughter but did not respond, instead returning to the wall that had been shattered by the axe.
The Ruthless Bandit’s power had a phase where it needed to build up; the more people he killed, the stronger he became. At this moment, there were no more enemies around He Ao, nor was there any environment for killing to build up this momentum.
In comparing the two, one was rising while the other was falling.
Hu Wen’s combat strength was originally not a match for the Berserker, and as the Berserker’s frenzy deepened, his power continued to grow.
Noding retreated to the distance, watching He Ao not taking up the Berserker’s challenge. As time passed and the Berserker’s strength grew more formidable, he sighed and took out a satellite phone,
"Looks like this guy is going to die here."
The chase between the Berserker and He Ao continued, with He Ao not making a single move from beginning to end, but continuously evading the Berserker’s attacks.
By now, most of the former Mayor’s office had been reduced to ruins by the Berserker. As his frenzy grew, his speed increased further, and the agility that seemed to give He Ao a significant advantage was gradually being matched.
The Berserker was getting closer and closer to He Ao.
"Grandpa, is that uncle going to lose?"
In a corner of the street in the distance, a young girl around fourteen or fifteen peered cautiously from behind a wall, watching the battle unfold.
She was the first girl He Ao had given a flower to the night before.
Her eyes couldn’t keep up with the speed of He Ao and the Berserker, but to her, it seemed like He Ao was always being hit.
"Ah, most likely he is going to be killed. Neither of them are good people; it doesn’t matter if he dies."
Behind her, an elderly man with a white beard sighed.
"But I think that uncle is a good person."
The girl shrank back a little and spoke softly.
"Ah..." The elderly man looked at the silhouette of He Ao, recalling his actions, as he was also among those who had brought breakfast to He Ao that morning, "Even if he is a good person, he’s still going to be beaten to death. In this world, good people don’t live long."
He propped himself up with his cane, taking his granddaughter’s hand, "Girl, let’s go. If we don’t leave now, we won’t be able to escape once they start fighting furiously."
He pulled, but realized he couldn’t move his granddaughter’s hand.
The girl was leaning against the wall, her fingers tightly gripping the mottled surface, her gaze locked onto the battle not far away.
Bright yellow covered almost the entire eye of the Berserker as he closed in on He Ao.
The huge shadow of the axe loomed over He Ao’s steps.
Drawing closer to his neck.
