He Ao crouched down, looking at a patch of dried, dark red at his feet.
He reached out to touch it, it was a bloodstain.
"Captain?"
Ye Feng looked toward He Ao, calling out softly.
Underpants Superman, witnessing this scene, appeared quite confused, unsure of what to do. After hearing Ye Feng’s call, he quickly reacted, turning his attention to He Ao, as if instantly finding his anchor.
"First, let’s explore the cabins on the deck. Pair up and don’t split up."
He Ao slowly got to his feet, signaling Ye Feng to lead the way, with himself and Underpants Superman following on either side of Ye Feng.
The three formed a triangle as they moved forward.
In this formation, no matter from which direction an assault came, He Ao could provide the fastest support to the other two.
Ye Feng was quite disciplined. He did as He Ao directed, and with evidently more experience than Underpants Superman, it was appropriate for him to take point.
He Ao was the strongest of the three. If he led, an attack from behind would slow down his reaction time, so he positioned himself at the rear.
Although the cruise ship didn’t show any apparent danger at the moment, it was always good to be prepared.
Underpants Superman didn’t understand much, but he was well aware of his ignorance. He didn’t offer any suggestions, and complied fully with He Ao’s arrangements.
The three quickly entered each cabin on the deck, checking them one by one.
This cruise ship, although larger than Yang De’s, wasn’t much bigger. There were only five floors of structures on the deck, including restaurants, swimming pools, and other public facilities.
Most of the cabins were open, with bowls of half-eaten instant noodles, kettles for boiling water, overturned tables and chairs, and some cabins even had scattered, dried bloodstains.
He Ao touched a kettle, which was still slightly warm, indicating that the passengers had "left" not long ago. Looking at the situation, it seemed as though they were taken away.
There were no bodies on the floor.
This meant no one had died.
This was getting interesting. Pirates typically seized both ships and their occupants in a hijacking because it’s troublesome to transport people. It’s most convenient to force the crew to navigate the ship, and the ship could be used as a bargaining chip against the shipowner.
The passengers had been taken from this ship, yet the ship was left behind.
Unless the ship had some other use.
He Ao led the two back to the first-floor lobby, lost in thought when he suddenly heard a faint cry near his ear, like a little girl weeping.
It seemed to be coming from below.
At the same time, Ye Feng also lifted his head to look at He Ao, his mouth slightly open.
Before he could speak, He Ao gently nodded and said,
"I heard it too, from down below. Let’s check it out."
Below the deck of a cruise ship is typically where the crew members live or where some entertainment facilities are located.
The three quickly found the passage leading down and went to the lower level.
The cruise ship’s interior was well-furnished overall; even this floor had wood-like flooring, which seemed somewhat dim and worn under the yellowish lights.
Just then, the entire ship suddenly shook violently.
Caught off guard, the three slid down at an angle along the incline of the ship, but being agile, they quickly regained their balance.
"Did something happen outside?"
Underpants Superman scratched his head in confusion.
"Looks like it’s going to rain."
He Ao walked to the window.
This floor was not yet below the waterline, and through the clear windows, one could vaguely make out the sky outside.
The stars were being obscured by the clouds.
"The weather at sea is always so unpredictable," Ye Feng sighed helplessly.
"We need to move faster," He Ao said in a low voice, turning to the others.
The ocean in a storm was not a safe place.
As they continued, He Ao suddenly furrowed his brow and crouched down, lightly touching the floor.
A thin layer of water stained his hand.
There were no obvious water stains on the deck outside, so why were there water stains below it?
"Follow the same formation as before and be cautious," He Ao stood up, signaling them to continue forward.
The dim lighting, the swaying cabins, the whole space created a claustrophobic sense of fear.
The cry of the little girl they had just heard seemed to have vanished without a trace.
The three explored their way forward, opening one empty cabin after another.
When they were more than halfway through their route, as Ye Feng was opening a door on the left, a child’s cry suddenly reached their ears.
Immediately following, a gray-white figure rushed out from behind the door, opening its huge maw to bite at Ye Feng.
It appeared to be a shark, yet it did not quite look like one.
Ye Feng’s mind went blank for an instant, but he reacted swiftly. He reached toward his lower back where a broad-bladed short knife hung.
However, someone was faster than him.
A flash of pure white light streaked by, and the ’shark’ charging at Ye Feng was cleaved in half, its blood—tinted with a hint of fishiness—splattering out and staining Ye Feng’s clothes.
The huge fish head and tail brushed over his head, slamming into the wall on the other side of the corridor, crashing to the floor, and rolling a few times, split in two.
Only then could Ye Feng clearly see what the shark looked like. It resembled a Great White Shark but was smaller; no more than two meters in length. Where normally only a couple of fins would be, it now sported densely packed sets of six fins, thicker and stronger than the average shark fin.
Ye Feng could almost visualize the way the shark used its fins to crawl across the smooth floor.
The shark’s belly was smooth and moist, and the water stains on the floor seemed to have been brought by the shark’s movements.
Ye Feng turned his head and looked at He Ao, who was holding a bone sword in his hand. It was He Ao who had just cleaved the shark in half with a single stroke.
The shark was too fast; even an ordinary Transcendent of rank E couldn’t keep up with its speed. Under a sudden attack, if it weren’t for He Ao’s support, even if Ye Feng had dodged, he would have been seriously injured.
"Captain, thank you,"
"It’s nothing," He Ao said softly. "Maintain formation, stay alert."
"Yes."
Ye Feng turned back and looked at the shark that had been split into two halves.
Underpants Superman looked around in confusion.
If all the sharks were killed, why was there a need to stay alert?
But he knew there must be a reason for He Ao’s instruction, so he followed the command and stayed vigilant.
The pungent smell of blood slowly permeated the humid air.
"Waah~"
The cries of babies suddenly resounded throughout the cabin.
The previously tightly closed cabin door burst open, and shadowy grey-white figures rushed out like phantoms.
This time, Ye Feng was prepared, instantly pulling out the short knife from his waist and slashing at the shark that lunged at him first.
The hard alloy blade, powered by his formidable strength, embedded into the shark’s skull, cutting the creature in half along the way.
Simultaneously, a second shark charged towards Underpants Superman.
Underpants Superman swung his hand, intending to block the frenzied influx of sharks, but he underestimated the shark’s striking speed. Knocked back and losing his footing, he saw the gaping maw biting towards his head.
Just then, a pure white glow flashed by.
He Ao clove the massive shark in two with a single sword strike.
Underpants Superman looked towards He Ao, just as he was about to thank him, he saw He Ao holding a suitcase in one hand and a sword in the other, charging into the midst of the grey-white figures.
Pure white sword light traced phantom arcs, blooming like flowers in the narrow cabin, wildly flourishing.
The blood splattered from the sky became the ornament on these pure white flowers, tainting the blooms with a hint of sinister beauty.
The sword light was too fast; the bloom of the flowers lasted but an instant. By the time Underpants Superman came to his senses, all that was left were shards of sharks and fresh blood soaking the brown floor.
Underpants Superman watched in a daze, even forgetting to put down the shark head he was holding until He Ao looked at him, and then he awkwardly tossed it away.
After dealing with the sharks, the trio waited for a while.
No new sharks appeared.
He Ao then crouched down to inspect the fins of the sharks.
Curious, Underpants Superman approached, looking at the sharks, "How come these sharks move so fast, it feels like..."
"Monsters from a relic,"
Ye Feng picked up his thought.
"Hmm."
He Ao nodded gently and stood up.
In the Copy World, there are strict classifications for exotic beasts.
Unlike ordinary evolved animals that rely on physical nutrition, most exotic beasts or transcendent plants are not picky eaters, prefer meat, and all exhibit a conspicuous tendency to attack humans, even evolving organs specifically to entice humans.
Scientists in the Copy World believe there must be some kind of special ’nutrient’ in animals and humans that attracts exotic beasts, with humans having a particularly high level of this ’nutrient,’ making them especially favored by exotic beasts.
Some scientists speculate that this nutrient might be ’soul.’
However, this speculation has not been fully proven.
Joey loved reading strange books, so He Ao’s mind was also filled with encyclopedic memories.
Returning to the present, the sharks attacking the trio were typical exotic beasts with powers beyond the ordinary. They had even evolved the cries of human babies to lure their prey.
The world was changing, not just humanity.
"These sharks seem to have been deliberately placed here,"
Ye Feng whispered, and then looked towards He Ao, "Captain, do we continue our exploration?"
They had come down originally because of the cries but now it seemed likely that the sounds were mimicked by these strange sharks.
"Continue,"
He Ao slowly rose to his feet.
The cries they had heard were different from those of the sharks.
As He Ao stood up, Underpants Superman, who had been at the back of the group, suddenly pointed towards the door of a nearby room and said, "There seems to be something inside."
Without waiting for a response, he immediately rushed towards the room.
He Ao frowned and quickly followed, stopping Underpants Superman at the doorway.
"Captain, there’s a treasure inside."
Underpants Superman glanced at He Ao, pointing impatiently to something inside the room.
He Ao followed his finger and saw a palm-sized red and gold ’treasure box’ placed on a desk at the back of the room.
The moment he saw the treasure box, a deep voice rose up in He Ao’s ears and heart.
This was a pirate’s treasure box.
It was filled with treasures plundered by pirates.
Just pick up this box, open it, and you could obtain endless wealth, becoming the ruler of the world.
The voice carried a heavy temptation, enticing people to open it.
He Ao seemed drawn by the voice; he let go of Underpants Superman and took step after step toward the treasure box.
