However, most of the researchers returning from the ruins didn’t have the heart to be too ruthless, generally stopping their assault once the enemy was down and then moving on to fight others.
Only a very few aimed to kill.
As He Ao approached, Underpants Superman had just taken down a pirate and turned to help another researcher who was small and skinny.
But the pirate he had taken down hadn’t been completely deprived of his combat abilities. While lying on the ground, the pirate slowly pulled out a pistol from his embrace, aiming at Underpants Superman’s back.
Just as he was ready to pull the trigger, a cold gun muzzle was already aiming at the back of his head.
Bang—
Bright red blood splattered out.
Underpants Superman seemed to sense something, he turned his head, saw the pirate lying on the ground with the pistol in his hand, paused for a moment, realizing what had just happened, he looked at the corpse, obviously feeling uncomfortable, but he quickly adjusted himself, looked at He Ao holding the gun, and nodded slightly at him,
"Thank you."
"No need."
He Ao nodded back, tucked away the gun, and moved on to join the next battle.
"Hey, why do you respond when he talks to you but not when I do? You can’t treat us differently like that."
A small head suddenly popped up beside He Ao.
It was Speech Master.
He Ao had seen her just a moment ago, her strength wasn’t great, and she hadn’t fought with any pirates. She was just leisurely wandering through the battlefield, even managing to chat with other researchers and pirates during breaks in the fight.
The battle started quickly and ended just as swiftly. Although some Transcendents made mistakes and sustained minor injuries, overall, the pirates posed no real threat to them.
Some pirates, realizing they were outmatched, turned to run, attempting to leap into the sea to return to their speedboats.
But Yang De wasn’t about to let these people get away, so he directed the surrounding Transcendents to capture these fleeing pirates and, for good measure, tied up the ones on deck who weren’t yet dead.
Soon, everyone began to clean up the battlefield.
"Ugh—"
Waves of retching sounds rose and fell gently.
The battle had been too intense, and many had been too caught up in the heat of the moment to notice much of anything, but as they began cleaning up the battlefield, some saw the corpses strewn about and started to vomit from disgust.
Killing monsters and killing people felt quite different.
He Ao was calmly helping the crew to clean the deck.
In the end, they tallied the results of the battle: a total of forty-seven pirates, eight dead in the speedboats below, fifteen captured alive, and the remaining twenty-four dead on the deck.
The battle had happened too fast for the pirates to have much chance to escape; they were all dealt with swiftly.
He Ao followed the crew members in tossing body after body into the sea, and it was then that Yang De approached.
"We’re going to change course soon, taking a longer but safer detour. These pirates don’t operate solo; there has to be a mothership nearby. Their aggressive approach is not typical of regular pirates; there might be more trouble brewing."
"Hmm."
He Ao nodded slightly, continuing to throw the corpses into the sea.
The thick scent of blood spread through the water.
The blood would attract sharks, which are highly sensitive to the smell of it.
Tales of horrific shark attacks on humans are rife on land.
But in reality, sharks don’t care for humans, who have low fat content. They are often drawn by the blood of the injured, bite once, and if they find it’s not to their taste, they turn away and leave.
It’s just that most people can’t survive that one bite.
The crew members behind He Ao were using high-pressure hoses to wash the blood from the deck, and the entire cruise ship fell into a sort of silence.
Standing beside He Ao, Yang De looked out at the sea that was gradually turning red with blood, and with the sound of retching in the background, he said softly,
"It seems you’re not afraid of killing people."
"The first time you do something, you’re bound to be unaccustomed to it. Do it enough, and you’ll get used to it. They will too, eventually." He Ao turned calmly, continuing to help the crew with the bodies. Unlike the jittery crew members, his motions were composed, "These murderous pirates should have been prepared to be killed the moment they decided to kill others."
These bodies couldn’t remain on the ship, as there was no equipment aboard to preserve them. In such weather, if they carried any germs, the rot could breed contagion. Given the limited medical resources on the ship, there was a very real risk of total loss.
The pirates came from the sea, and to the sea they would return—it was their fate.
Yang De looked at He Ao standing beside him and felt that the young man was particularly interesting. He asked softly,
"Are you interested in joining our overseas department?"
"Overseas department?"
He Ao turned to him.
"The department of the Research Institute responsible for matters outside Central Earth,"
Yang De lit a cigarette and put it in his mouth. He offered one to He Ao but was refused, so he just smoked and watched the distant seagulls, with the wind carrying away the smoke plumes, "We spend most of our time abroad, executing missions that are either secret or not so secret. Relatively speaking, we don’t have as many rules, you’d fit right in with us."
"But I am a law-abiding good citizen."
He Ao threw a body into the sea—the last one.
Watching He Ao’s skilled disposal of the body, Yang De fell into a brief silence.
He didn’t know how to respond to that comment and ended up just laughing and shaking his head,
"Joining the overseas department doesn’t necessarily mean you have to leave your hometown, family, or the environment you live in. You only need to travel when on missions. We pay very well, and the compensation for injuries or death is also high..."
"How high?"
He Ao asked abruptly.
Yang De paused, thought for a moment, and then explained in detail, "The salary for ordinary overseas staff is around fifteen thousand, with full payment into the social insurance and housing fund. The salary for Transcendents ranges from twenty thousand to one hundred and fifty thousand, depending on the difficulty of work and rank. As for compensation... it’s probably in the millions."
"Are there outsourced missions? Do contracted employees pay into social insurance and the housing fund?"
He Ao asked seriously.
"There are some outsourced missions... but they’re not many and the tasks involved aren’t that important. We don’t really have contracted employees; we just outsource certain parts of the mission entirely to the outsourced personnel and settle their remuneration in a lump sum after the task is completed,"
Yang De looked at He Ao curiously, pondering for a moment, "If you want to take on outsourced missions, that’s possible too. You can add me as a friend on the internal network with your account. If there’s a mission, I’ll contact you. My codename is ’Warrior’."
"Sure."
He Ao glanced up at him and nodded lightly.
After speaking, he headed towards the cabin.
He hadn’t brought his phone with him when he came out.
"A hero emerges from youth, eh."
Yang De leaned on the railing, watching He Ao’s retreating figure and sighed softly as seagulls flew overhead.
Just then, the young man who had been translating with the megaphone earlier came over slowly, "Brother Yang, can I have a cigarette?"
"Damn it, these are good cigarettes. Smoking one means one less for me. Go smoke your own."
Yang De rolled his eyes.
"But you just offered that guy a cigarette..."
The young man seemed somewhat indignant.
"What talent does he have, and what do you have?" Yang De said gruffly, "Half of those thirty-some were killed by him, and he also dealt with those fishing boats afterward. Where the hell were you hiding when the fight started?"
As he said this, Yang De suddenly remembered something and looked at the young man with confusion, "Shouldn’t you be inside interrogating those pirates? Why are you out here?"
"We have a ’Sharer’ in our team," the young man took a cigarette, put it in his mouth, and lit it, "Interrogation is not my job when someone can get all the intelligence just by chatting."
"Indeed," Yang De mused, "She must have leveled up in the ruins."
"Huh?" The young man was startled, "What’s the Sharer’s talent after leveling up?"
"How the hell should I know?" Yang De rolled his eyes. He looked up at the clear blue sky, "Did you shake off the tails following us?"
"Yeah, I just took care of it at the top of the bridge," the young man nodded slightly, "Those pirates seemed like they were up to no good."
"Get in touch with the Research Institute,"
Yang De massaged his temples, "I’m afraid our disguise has been penetrated."
