Chapter 237: Chapter 237: Days Are Getting Better (Long Chapter - Please Subscribe, Add to Favorites, Request Monthly Tickets)

During the decade in which Philip steered the group, the reputation of the board at the grassroots level was not universally respected, but it had reached the point where it was utterly despised.

Essentially, most of the decisions made by the board that Philip led were made under the guise of being in the employees’ best interest, but in reality, they were just a means for itself to make money.

So the first thing to do was to re-establish the credibility of the group’s leadership.

The ’internal news’ fabricated by Lina, although there were many factual loopholes, had effectively conveyed a message, that there had been a change in the group’s leaders, making a clear break from the previous board and thereby beginning to shape the new leaders’ credibility.

"Mr. Vian, with us implementing this policy so urgently, could there be any problems?"

Lina asked cautiously as she watched the rapidly increasing number of applicants on her screen, not having anticipated such a large response.

"No policy is perfect from the start, it’s all about continuously identifying and solving problems,"

He Ao’s gaze lingered on the numbers that danced across the screen, "Progress itself is about moving forward through trial and error."

In just a few short hours, nearly ten thousand people had submitted their applications.

Many of these applicants were not the target group for this welfare policy; in fact, many were trying to take advantage of the chaos to grab an unexpected fortune for themselves.

Before the plan was initiated, no one could foresee the problems that would arise, only during the implementation would issues continuously be discovered and resolved.

Lina nodded, half-understanding, circles of fatigue evident around her eyes, betraying her exhaustion.

After all, having pulled three all-nighters and then slept only a brief afternoon before yet another, she wasn’t a Transcendent; although her spirit was still enthusiastic, her body was struggling to keep up.

"You’ve done well," He Ao said, noticing her tired appearance, "There are a few empty guest rooms upstairs, go and take a rest."

"Huh?"

Lina, startled, glanced at the luxurious villa and followed the housemaid who’d come to do domestic work upstairs, still in a daze.

Vian’s villa was mostly cleaned by smart robots, but every once in a while, professional maids were hired for a deep clean, after all, such a vast villa was only lived in by Vian and Danny, and many areas were neglected, leading to the growth of plants and insects that could damage the building over time.

However, usually, it was the elderly butler, Danny, who would escort guests to their rooms, but Danny was not in the villa at the moment.

——

"Director Danny Lowe, you can’t talk nonsense without evidence."

The middle-aged man with a portly belly, dressed in a loose-fitting suit, leaned back in his boss’s chair, angrily slammed his hand on the table, addressing the elderly, silver-haired butler before him.

That man was Jamie, the head of the Nolanka Group’s Asset Management Department, which was responsible for managing, processing, and procuring assets for the entire headquarters—a department known for its lucrative opportunities.

"Cough, cough,"

Danny coughed, and two Federal Bureau of Investigation agents emerged from behind him, "You shouldn’t discuss this with me, but rather explain to the Federal Bureau of Investigation."

"Good day, Mr. Jamie,"

The leading FBI agent flashed the Olive Shield Badge of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, "Here is a warrant for your arrest. You are suspected of selling off group assets, cross-city smuggling of weapons, and trafficking of banned drugs. Please come with us."

If it were just internal corruption, it would fall under the jurisdiction of Kaye City Police. However, since the case involved multiple Fortress Cities, it was a matter for the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

"I didn’t, I didn’t do it."

Jamie wanted to rebel, but two agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation stepped forward, each grabbing one of his arms, and pushed him down onto the desk.

Used to indulgence, his body was weak, and after struggling a couple of times, he was gasping for breath, sweating profusely on his forehead.

He lifted his head, looking at Danny, "Uncle Danny Lowe, please spare me. When I was a child, you even held me in your arms."

Danny shook his head and turned to walk out of the office.

"Danny Lowe, you old bastard, you and that little bastard came to seize power, you’re eliminating dissent, my dad is also a shareholder of the group, a board member, this group isn’t yours, what right do you have to arrest me, you’re breaking the rules."

Jamie’s shrieking roar came from behind the old butler, but his voice did not cause even the slightest ripple in Danny, who calmly walked deeper into the corridor.

This time, Danny brought not only two agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation but also a large number of police officers.

These people roamed throughout the entire building, taking away one individual after another.

Those once-arrogant managers were paraded in front of their subordinates.

This was the result of the group asset trafficking case that He Ao had asked Danny to investigate the day before.

Actually, there wasn’t much to investigate, just like how Philip had brazenly occupied the group’s assets, these people acted without any concealment, and some parts of the evidence for their trafficking of the group’s fixed assets were even blatantly stored in the group’s archives.

However, uprooting one problem led to another, and this time the case involved a large number of senior management personnel, most of whom were relatives of the board members.

Before he set out, Danny had asked He Ao whether to really arrest everyone involved.

To this, He Ao’s reply was,

"Sweep them all up."

These people were actually the largest parasites of the group, priding themselves on their ’royal and noble’ status, believing they were the masters of the group, recklessly breaking rules, favoring relatives, and embezzling assets.

They were numerous, but not so many that they could cause the entire group to be crippled.

There were a lot of capable people from the lower levels, always ready to take their places.

Over the years, because Vian had not made a statement, Danny had never taken action against these people, but in fact, he was very clear about which capable people were under them and who could immediately take their place if problems arose.

"You’re all mad, you’re paving the way for your own demise, your destruction is not far away, just watch, I’ll be back soon."

As the old butler reached the first floor, Jamie was coincidentally being pushed downstairs by two agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

He glared at the old butler, hissing, "The group isn’t exclusively the Nolanka’s, nor is it yours, Danny Lowe, it belongs to all of us, you have no right to do this, I’ll be back soon."

Unable to tolerate his howling any longer, one of the agents took an electronic gag and sealed his mouth.

Danny calmly watched as Jamie was pushed into a Federal Bureau of Investigation vehicle, then slowly walked to the door.

People came and went past him, and he lifted his head to gaze at the vast expanse of sky.

The sky was darkening, clouds gathering.

It was going to rain.

Jack finished a day’s work and struggled to push open the door of his home.

Unexpectedly, today Anna didn’t run over to greet him, and as soon as he opened the door, he smelled the rich aroma of roasted chicken.

"Is there something special today?"

Jack looked at his wife, who was serving the roasted chicken at the table, with some confusion, thinking hard, "Your birthday? Anna’s birthday? Anna’s birthday is still some time away, isn’t your birthday the week after next?"

"Of course there is good news, ta-da-da-dang!"

Elsa walked up to her husband with a smile, showing him a document on her wristlet.

"What’s this?"

Jack looked at the document with curiosity.

"Approval!" Elsa laughed, "The application we filed today for the discount, it passed!"

"So soon?"

Jack was somewhat shocked.

"Exactly, I had all the documents well prepared," Elsa winked, looking quite pleased with herself, "Several of my colleagues had theirs sent back for additional material."

"Hahaha, my wife is amazing."

Jack stretched his arm around his wife’s waist.

"Keep it down."

Elsa slapped her husband’s hand lightly and pointed to the couch, where Anna was staring at her father with wide eyes, book in hand.

Jack sheepishly withdrew his hand.

Elsa picked up their daughter, who was looking puzzled, and placed her in the seat, tore off a large chicken leg for her, and then slowly said, "I took Anna to the kindergarten today, and the teacher said the spring term is about to start. We can wait for the spring term to enroll her and just get her some introductory books to read for now."

"So, how much discount did we get?"

Jack asked curiously.

"We’re a dual-employee family," Elsa caught her husband’s curious look and laughed, "With all the discounts subtracted, we got a 35% discount. The original weekly cost of 135 federal coins is now only 87 federal coins!"

"That much saved?"

Jack was a bit surprised.

"And there’s more," Elsa continued, with a twinkle in her eye, "The apartment we are living in now is also from the Nolanka Group, and the discount for this apartment has been approved too. For combined rent and management fees, we got a 25% discount. From 470 federal coins a week, now we only pay 352!"

"Cough cough..."

Jack, who was eating roasted chicken, nearly choked; he looked at Elsa with some shock, "That much cheaper? Really?"

That meant the money saved on their daughter’s school fees plus a few extra federal coins.

"Of course it’s true," Elsa smiled at her husband, "I’ve just confirmed with the apartment manager, starting next week, our bills will be calculated with the discount."

Jack was so shocked that he couldn’t quite find words. A reduction of over a hundred federal coins in weekly rent and management fees was no small sum.

It took him a while to respond, smiling at his wife’s cheerful face, "Does that mean next week we’ll have over a hundred federal coins extra?"

Next week Anna wasn’t going to school, meaning that the over one hundred coins saved on rent that week were purely extra.

With his wife nodding, Jack mused for a moment and then said softly, "Didn’t you have your eye on that gold necklace for 99 federal coins last month?"

"You’re already thinking about spending the money you just saved, huh?"

Elsa pouted, "Let’s check your stomach problem next week, I’ve already scheduled a doctor’s appointment, should be enough money after your health insurance is deducted..."

Jack looked into his wife’s tender eyes and paused, "Then the week after next, Anna won’t have school either."

"You, honestly!"

Elsa burst into laughter.

Anna, munching on her chicken leg with her face covered in greasy smudges, looked up in confusion, not understanding why her parents were suddenly talking about her.

Jack gently stroked his daughter’s little head,

"Life is getting better."

"Yes, it is."

Elsa nodded gently.

"Speaking of which, isn’t the mayoral election in Dawn City tomorrow?"

Jack turned to look at his wife.

"Why bring that up all of a sudden?"

"No reason, just remembered we still have two ballots from the municipal government, but now we’re not in Dawn City anymore."

"Who were you planning to vote for?"

"Hmm? Christos, I think. I believe he can make our lives better."

"Me too, but it seems like, what we hoped Christos would do, Mr. Vian here has done already."

"Hmm..."

——

He Ao lay back on the couch, a gigantic projection screen in front of him.

In the center of the screen was a handsome man in a silver suit, standing amidst a sea of people, smiling.

"Ladies and gentlemen, good evening."

A tidal wave of cheers erupted.

Christos was about to give his final speech before the election.
