Accompanied by a crisp sound, the molding machine slowly opened.
The metal piece, shaped like a barrel, appeared in He Ao’s vision.
He took out the metal barrel and carefully fiddled with it.
This design was Vian’s work, and it looked quite exquisite.
He Ao picked up the metal detection report lying next to him, and the analysis equipment showed that this metal contained 4.98% carbon, 60.18% tantalum, 14.84% hafnium, 9.87% silver, and 4.11% silicon, as well as 6.02% of an unknown compound.
An unknown compound meant that the analysis equipment couldn’t decipher the composition of the compound, nor could it find a known compound with the same properties in the past data records.
The analyzers in Vian’s laboratory were the most advanced available in the Federation; if this analyzer couldn’t decipher the compound, it indicated that this unknown compound had never appeared before nor been recorded in any published academic papers, suggesting it was a special product developed by the Rockville Group.
Putting down the detection report, He Ao placed the metal cylinder onto a small round platform next to him.
There were four agile mechanical arms surrounding this platform, an invention of Vian’s own device. As long as the corresponding model data was inputted and the appropriate materials were placed in it, these mechanical arms could create whatever the user desired.
What He Ao was preparing to make was a miniature fusion reactor vessel that had been designed long ago.
He placed the previously-made miniature superconductive magnetic confinement device and other materials on the material platform.
During a fusion reaction, temperatures of tens of millions of degrees would be released. Even with this super metal that was heat-resistant, thermally insulated, and electrically conductive—manufactured by the Rockville Group—it wouldn’t allow the fuel to burn directly beside the metal. Instead, a superconductive magnetic device was needed to provide confinement and pressure for the fuel.
After everything was set, He Ao started the equipment. And at that moment, a gentle knock on the door was heard.
He Ao opened the door and saw the silver-haired old butler.
"Master Vian, the list of valuable items hijacked from Nord Bank today has been sorted out. It took some time to contact the owners of several special items, that’s why it’s ready only now. Also, the surviving thief from today has been transferred to Chief Jelang and his statement is at the end of the file."
Danny handed a stack of printed documents to He Ao.
The top page of this file was the index, followed by photos of each item and detailed introductions.
The first item listed was the several millions in federal coin cash that was stolen. Besides this cash, the other items were more or less the same, including what looked to be valuable antique vases, plates, gold crafts, and so on.
Nothing out of the ordinary.
He Ao kept flipping downward until he came to the last item of the valuable goods.
It was an aged rectangular wooden box that, upon opening, revealed a pair of completely black gloves.
The gloves seemed to be made from the hide of some animal, with a simple gold coin pattern embroidered in golden thread on the back of the hand.
These gloves were very old in style, and from what Vian understood of art history, such designs were popular around three to four hundred years ago in the northern parts of the Federation, where winters were extremely cold and many people liked to wear these fur gloves to keep warm.
But normal fur gloves naturally could not be preserved so long when exposed to the air like this.
He Ao bowed his head and read the detailed introduction of the gloves.
This pair of gloves was called ’Thief’s Gloves’. The depositor’s ancestors lived in the northern Federation, and it was only three or four generations ago that they moved from the north to Kaye City. He had stored these gloves at Nord Bank about a year ago.
At that time, he was on bail, and then he was sentenced to five years in prison for theft.
Danny made arrangements for someone to find the man who stored the gloves in Kaye City prison. After a cordial and friendly conversation, they learned the purpose of these gloves from him.
This "Thief’s Gloves" can open the majority of doors in the world, as long as it involves a mechanism, a lock, any ’door’ that can be opened, it can open.
Regarding the precise meaning of ’majority,’ the person who deposited the gloves claimed he did not know; he had never encountered a door that could not be opened, but his father had told him that some ’doors’ are unopenable.
The gloves also have a side effect: once worn, one cannot help but indulge in opening other people’s doors for fun, and then they would stumble upon some ’unfortunate’ incidents.
For instance, this thief happened to witness a scene where a certain Kaye City councilman was having a private meeting with a lover, and was arrested on the spot by the councilman’s bodyguard. They dug up all of his past deeds—although he had only committed petty thefts and had not been involved in any major cases, he was still sentenced to five years of imprisonment.
Actually, the information about these gloves wasn’t exactly secret, as their depositor enjoyed drinking and, after getting drunk, would start to brag about it. This led to everyone in his regular tavern knowing he possessed an extraordinary item, they even knew exactly what the gloves looked like.
After Danny sent people to verify it, he confirmed that the information was roughly correct.
He Ao looked at the file in his hand and fell into thought.
Locks...
It’s very likely that these gloves are exactly what the masked man desired, but what would he need an unlocking item for...
He Ao flipped to the next page, his eyes landing on the final page of the file.
The last page held the confession of the robber arrested today for robbing the Nolanka bank.
According to the confession, these robbers were merely gang members loitering on the fringe of the city.
About three days ago, a person wearing a chubby baby-faced mask approached them, offering a chance to participate in ’big business,’ and gave each of them ten thousand federal coins.
Eager for the money, they followed and the masked man laid out the plan to rob the bank, instructing the one strapped with explosives to lead them.
All he knew was the plan to rob the Nolanka bank; he was completely ignorant of any other information.
When asked about the masked man, he claimed he only overheard others vaguely referring to him as ’Chaos.’
Chaos.
Indeed...
This guy must be Chaos.
But this fellow often used laser cutting guns to open bank vaults; what kind of door could be stronger than a bank vault?
Or could it be that the ’door’ isn’t just strong, but also well-defended, so much so that his men couldn’t simply rush in?
He Ao paused for a moment and then looked towards the old butler and asked softly, "Where has the fighter jet escorting Kyle reached?"
"One moment."
Danny raised his wristband and sent out some information.
After a short while, he looked at He Ao with a surprised expression,
"The Federal Bureau of Investigation squad escorting Kyle encountered an exotic beast attack en route and might only arrive by midnight tomorrow or early morning the day after."
"The corridor they traveled on is a safe passage explored over many years; powerful exotic beasts usually do not appear nearby, and ordinary beasts cannot affect the escort’s schedule."
He Ao thought for a moment and added, "Ask what exactly happened."
