The wailing sound was so mournful that it inevitably evoked a sense of desolation in He Ao’s heart.
He Ao frowned, his gaze disappearing into the pitch-black night.
He had miscalculated slightly; the visibility in the darkness of the ruins was even lower than he had imagined.
Looking down from the rooftop, he couldn’t see the ground at all, only a deep, pitch-dark abyss.
And that mournful cry had come from the depths of this abyss.
Vaguely, He Ao could see a huge, slender creature, black as ink, ’swimming’ through the ’abyss’ between the buildings below his feet.
At this moment, beneath the tall buildings, within the veil of night, those inky depths unseen below were like the unfathomable deep sea, and the giant creature was wandering in this ’deep sea.’
And the night was the ’water’ it lived in.
This was a scene never mentioned in the Research Institute’s materials, which simply stated that the night might be more dangerous than the daytime, and that one might encounter some stronger monsters, suggesting to rest in a building during the night.
They never said that such life forms existed in the darkness of the ruins.
Had the Institute’s Explorers never encountered such creatures?
No, perhaps some had.
But they... all died.
As He Ao realized this, a tremendous shiver emerged from his back.
It wasn’t the fear of realizing the truth, but the shiver of being watched by some powerful presence.
As He Ao noticed the Black Shadow, the Black Shadow also noticed him.
This monster was very strong, far surpassing D-level.
Even Pena had never given He Ao such a strong sense of oppression; it was very likely that the opponent was a C-level Transcendent life form, perhaps even B-level.
He Ao withdrew his gaze, rolled sharply, and returned to the staircase on the rooftop.
The data from the Research Institute had a strong survival bias, as only those who lived could bring back information.
And those survivors barely encountered any strong Transcendent life forms, naturally thinking the night was not so dangerous.
But perhaps the Institute couldn’t be blamed, after all, there really weren’t any strong Transcendent creatures around the initial entrance to the ruins.
Explorers like He Ao, who could walk ten hours in one breath, delving deep into the ruins, were after all the minority; the majority of Explorers only dared to loiter around the ’Novice Area.’
He Ao reached for the rocket launcher beside him, opened the box of Armor-Piercing Projectiles, loaded one onto the launcher, and coldly watched the four corners of the rooftop.
The giant wail gradually drifted away; the terrifying Transcendent life form seemed to have gone far.
But He Ao didn’t dare relax in the slightest.
He couldn’t entrust his life to the mercy of others.
Only when the sound had completely disappeared did He Ao pick up the ammunition box and walk out of the staircase area, preparing to leave this place.
Just as he stepped out of the door of the staircase area, his foot suddenly halted.
Then he turned sharply, looking back at the top of the staircase.
Under the dim moonlight, a somewhat rotten, severe bony maw blocked half of He Ao’s field of vision,
and the putrid stench filled He Ao’s nostrils.
He Ao wasn’t affected by the stench; he instantly pulled the trigger, and a great flame shot out from the muzzle, rushing into the gullet of the gaping maw.
Almost at the moment the Armor-Piercing Projectile was fired, He Ao, carrying the ammunition box, sharply turned and leaped forward.
A massive explosion burst behind him, lighting up half the sky with surging flames.
The blast wave pushed He Ao forward for a distance, but fortunately, he did not fly off the rooftop.
The moment he landed, he crouched down, crashing into the rooftop’s edge wall, breaking a hole and spilling bricks, while He Ao himself stopped at the edge, just a step from falling off.
Below, was the bottomless night.
This was the first time he had engaged in combat of this magnitude with his own body.
He Ao turned his head to look behind him, where countless pieces of rotten flesh lay scattered on the ground, and at the top of the staircase, remained a giant Giant Lizard’s tail.
It seemed to be a Giant Lizard, but a living one would not have such a heavy stench of decay.
Just then, a faint vibration suddenly came from the side wall.
Something was climbing up along the wall.
He Ao immediately opened the ammunition box, loaded a rocket, and looked towards the side wall.
A massive Giant Lizard, half-covered in severe white bones and black all over, was climbing rapidly up the bare edge of the wall toward the rooftop, moving so fast it climbed over a dozen meters in the blink of an eye.
He Ao watched it ascend silently, rocket aimed at the ’Giant Lizard.’
When it rose to a certain height, a burst of flames spewed forth, and the slender projectile shot into its body in the blink of an eye.
The explosive detonations resounded once again, as the dark giant lizard shattered into several segments and fell from the sky.
This giant lizard was not alive; it was one of the corpses that He Ao had seen earlier by the roadside.
What kind of ability was this? To drive the already dead corpses to fight for oneself?
He Ao gained a new understanding of this bizarre world, but he had no time to think or hesitate, and he immediately loaded a new armor-piercing projectile, turning his gaze to another wall.
After all, he had seen more than one corpse of a giant lizard by the roadside.
Gaghh—
But it was already too late. With a whistle-like roar, a giant lizard, missing half of its throat, poked its head out from behind a nearby wall, and its body swiftly climbed upwards.
He Ao immediately aimed the shell at its body and pulled the trigger.
The burning armor-piercing projectile swiftly penetrated its body, carrying its enormous bulk backward, away from the wall.
Another explosion sounded, and the giant lizard’s carcass burst into two sections in mid-air.
However, at this moment, He Ao had no time to observe the condition of the giant lizard; he took the last armor-piercing projectile from the ammo box, stepped back two paces, then, with a running start, leaped out through the gap he had just shattered.
Sometime after his leap, a smaller, dark giant lizard burst out from the stairwell into the still-burning fire, stamping it out and charging towards He Ao.
It was very fast, but He Ao had already jumped off the rooftop by this point. He landed on the adjacent building’s rooftop, rolled to dissipate the force, and then immediately loaded the last armor-piercing projectile into the rocket launcher.
Suddenly, the giant lizard behind him also burst through the opening and leaped toward He Ao, its massive mouth wide open, its tongue shooting out like a sword.
At that instant, a metallic projectile engulfed in flames shot into its throat and penetrated its body.
Brilliant fireworks exploded in the void.
He Ao glanced at the scorching hot barrel and tossed the rocket launcher aside.
He brought a total of six armor-piercing projectiles with him; two had been used to blast living giant lizards during the day, and four just now on the dead, depleting his supply.
The rocket launcher was also now useless.
Actually, at first, he prepared to bring another box of projectiles, but Yang De said that the relics had a weight restriction, and carrying more was useless because he wouldn’t be able to bring them inside, so he had given up on that idea.
He Ao glanced at the building he had just stood on. Dark giant lizards were rapidly climbing up its walls.
Some of the lizards seemed to have noticed that He Ao had left and were now jumping towards the building where he currently stood.
Given the extent of damage on these ’giant lizard corpses,’ regular firearm bullets probably wouldn’t harm them; he would have to see if fighting them with a sword would work.
He Ao didn’t want to engage in close combat with these foul-smelling ’necromantic creatures,’ and besides, there were too many of them.
He quickly descended from the rooftop, and after going down a few floors, he leaped from the broken window ledge of a room to the next building over.
The sudden ’animation’ of these giant lizard corpses likely had something to do with that giant creature emitting mournful cries he had just encountered.
It was very likely that the creature’s ability was to control the dead.
This sort of necromancy, He Ao had only seen in novels and on TV; coming across it in reality was a first for him.
When facing the unknown, it was best first to avoid its edge, to observe, and to gather enough intelligence.
He Ao roughly estimated the direction in which the wailing creature had departed, then swiftly moved forward, with his back to that direction.
Without the rocket launcher and ammo box, he felt much lighter. After a few dodges and building-to-building leaps, he finally landed on the ground.
The dark giant lizards did not pursue him.
He Ao breathed a sigh of relief.
He looked around; most streets within the relics seemed similar, and under the pitch-black night with very low visibility, he couldn’t distinguish whether he had been on this street before.
Not far, he noticed some damaged buildings and several giant lizard corpses with missing body parts lying at the base of these buildings.
Different from the giant lizards that had chased He Ao, these lizards lay motionless at the base of the buildings, as if they were truly ’dead.’
The scene before him seemed vaguely familiar, and He Ao furrowed his brows.
He stopped going forward and, comparing it with his fuzzy memory, turned to the left.
But after only a few steps, he stopped.
In the midst of the dim and dark night, a vast, endless ’black plain’ appeared in front of him.
He Ao crouched down, grabbed a handful of the humus soil from under his feet.
Then fell silent for a brief moment.
It seemed he had returned to that massive Black Soil Plaza.
And just as he was inspecting the soil,
A massive, floating behemoth slowly hovered over his head in the air.
Countless crimson ’flames’ gazed down at the young man below, flickering in the pitch-dark night sky.
