"What’s inside after you open it? It can’t be another small box, can it?"
The Speech Master stretched out her hand to pull off the rubber band wrapped around the matchbox, slid out the inner tray, and revealed a small white paper box.
She took out the small paper box, opened it, and revealed a small cloth pouch bound by a rubber band. Squeezing the pouch, she felt something round and hard.
"How did you do it?"
Surprised, she glanced at He Ao, then opened the cloth pouch and took out the coin with a smiley face drawn on it.
"Secret."
He Ao took back the matchbox and coin from her hand.
"Acting all mysterious," the Speech Master pouted, "I’m not playing with you anymore."
Then she turned and ran off.
He Ao smiled, shaking his head, and continued to examine the firearms on the rack.
The magic trick was actually quite simple. It started with a feint, drawing the audience’s attention to his right hand, but before his right hand made the throwing motion, He Ao had already tossed the coin from his right hand to his left.
Then, he dropped the coin from his left hand into a flat plastic tube, which was inserted deep into the matchbox and secured with a rubber band around the pouch, causing the coin to slide directly into the pouch.
This action had to be quick and unseen by the audience, so the distracting gesture with the right hand was very important.
After that, it was simple. During the display, he pulled out the flat plastic tube, the rubber band would automatically snap back, sealing the mouth of the small pouch, and then while taking out the matchbox, he discreetly returned the rubber band on top of the matchbox to its normal position.
It looked as though the coin had been transformed into the matchbox.
All these props were modified by himself. There were ready-made small props for sale online, making this magic trick easier, but he definitely didn’t have the chance to buy them now, so he had to make his own props.
Props were crucial for a Magician because many slightly more complex magic tricks required props to perform. After all, they were creating the illusion of miracles, not real miracles.
He Ao placed his hand on a lightweight submachine gun and tested the mechanical sight on top.
At that moment, a small head peered over, cautiously asking,
"What kind of gun are you planning to take?"
He Ao glanced at her but said nothing, continuing to try out other guns.
"Are you mad?"
The Speech Master peeked around him.
Then she raised two portable packs, "I went to get our rations, and I got a portion for you, too."
There were clips on the Combat Suit for attaching the portable packs. He Ao took the portable pack and snapped it onto the clip, saying offhandedly, "Thanks."
"No need, no need, we’re so familiar with each other," the Speech Master chuckled, "Let me tell you, the time inside the Relic World is different from the real world. It’s about a twelve to one ratio, which means one day in the Relic World is only two hours in the real world."
He Ao continued his search for a suitable weapon, unfazed. Zhang Ansha had informed him about the difference in the flow of time between the Relic World and the real world, just not the detailed ratio, only noting that someone would brief him once he reached there.
However, the news from the Speech Master prompted him to indulge in brief contemplation.
The flow of time between the Copy World and the main world was roughly twenty-four to one, while the Relic World and the main world was approximately twelve to one.
It seemed the Relic World was indeed not within the Copy World, but their time flow varied from the main world, implying some sort of connection.
"We will be in the Relic World for three days, which means six hours in the real world,"
Seeing that He Ao only thanked her and continued to ignore her, the Speech Master kept chatting, "This ration pack is for three days, but it’s mostly compressed biscuits, Solid Energy Bars, and the like. The only tasty thing is three packs of self-heating meals. You can’t eat the plants and animals in the Relic World; they might be contaminated."
At this, she paused, "Hold on a second."
Then she took off like a shot, while He Ao picked up a sniper rifle, examining it carefully.
"This," the voice of the Speech Master came from beside him, as she handed He Ao three large water bottles, "There is water everywhere in the Relic World, and it’s drinkable, but to avoid getting caught in the desert, it’s very important to bring your own water. Each of these bottles contains a liter and a half of water, and they can be discarded once empty."
"Thank you,"
He Ao gave her a glance, reached out, and took the three water bottles, each fitted with a shoulder strap that could be slung over the shoulder.
Then, he continued to adjust the sniper rifle.
The Speech Master watched his silent demeanor, puffed up her cheeks, and then with a ’pop,’ deflated them.
She put her hands on her hips, thinking to herself that she couldn’t keep being a fawning admirer, at least not circling around this guy anymore.
At that moment, He Ao put the sniper rifle back on the rack; it was still too big and not very practical in the wilderness.
Then he looked at the Speech Master, "Do you want to see a magic trick?"
"Yes, yes!"
The Speech Master nodded vigorously.
He Ao took out a matchbox and a coin again, asking the Speech Master to put the coin inside the matchbox.
Then He Ao checked to make sure the matchbox rattled, confirming there was a coin inside, and had the Speech Master wrap the matchbox with a rubber band.
Next, He Ao instructed the Speech Master to place the matchbox in her palm, and with a gentle tap, he seemingly plucked the coin from between her hair strands.
The Speech Master, with eyes wide and mouth agape, opened the matchbox to find it empty.
"That’s magic, isn’t it?"
The dark-skinned girl blinked rapidly as she looked at He Ao.
"It’s a miracle."
He Ao smiled and retrieved the coin and matchbox.
This magic trick was actually quite simple; the match tray had an opening, and He Ao had already removed the coin through it while he was checking.
The reason the box rattled when shaken was that He Ao had attached a small metal piece to the surface of the matchbox; by dislodging a catch, the metal piece would hit the box when shaken, and even an empty box would rattle.
When the match tray was drawn out, the small metal piece would be pushed by the moving tray to the matchbox cover, where it would snap back into place.
The drawback of this magic trick was that if someone closely examined the matchbox, they would discover He Ao’s little mechanism.
In fact, all magic props are not meant to withstand scrutiny, which is why He Ao always retrieved his props immediately after performing a trick.
With that, his first Miracle Magic trick was completely solidified.
He Ao’s hand, which had retrieved the coin, pressed it against the matchbox, and the coin simply vanished into the box.
Putting a coin into a sealed container or retrieving a coin from a container—these two tricks were actually extensions of the Retrieve objects from the air magic, and having completed them, the original miracle magic now had two additional effects.
To put an object into a sealed container or to directly retrieve an object from such a container, originally the Retrieve objects from the air magic could not bypass obstacles, but now it could.
However, the effective range of these two abilities was shorter than direct air retrieval, only three meters, and the consumption was high.
But if he directly touched the object or container with his hand, the consumption could be significantly reduced.
Unfortunately, these two effects still did not work on living beings; otherwise, He Ao could just approach an enemy and, through the air, slice off their kidney.
After all, body cavities could be considered a kind of sealed space in some sense.
