He Ao walked out onto the street and flipped over the blank card in his hand. On the back of the card, lines of words were written.
[Factory Main Gate]
[Factory Back Gate]
[Public Restroom]
[Archives Room]
······
The script on the first few lines seemed old, as if marking the access points the card could unlock, while the line at the bottom was written in ink that hadn’t fully dried.
[The main and back gates of the factory often update their security systems, so it is not certain if they can still be used. The internal access controls are not updated as frequently.]
The logic was simple: the highest security level was at the entrance, but once inside, you were basically regarded as one of the insiders, so the security level was not as high anymore.
He Ao put the card away and stopped in front of a small convenience store.
He picked up a duckbill cap from the rack at the entrance of the store, tried it on, and it fit perfectly.
He looked up at the sky.
A flock of birds flew over in the direction he was looking at.
Then he withdrew his gaze, bought the duckbill cap, and walked into the narrow alley next to the convenience store.
----
In a hotel some distance away, a man standing in front of a window slowly moved the binoculars from his eyes.
The flock of birds flew across his line of sight.
Just a moment ago, for an instant, he thought the young man had spotted him.
He raised his wrist communicator and whispered, "Target has entered the alley."
He continued to observe the secluded alley through his binoculars.
The alley was short, with only one way in and out.
Before long, he saw the young man, now sporting a brand-new duckbill cap, walk out of the alley and hail a taxi.
"The target has taken a cab, hurry, follow him," he quickly shouted into the communicator.
Then he ended the communication and dialed another number.
"Hello."
A mild voice came from the other end of the line.
"Boss, I think I’ve found the person who killed Slanca. A jacket, basic pants, a young guy; he just took a cab, and my people are following him."
After hearing the voice on the other side of the phone, the man quickly said, "Just now, a group of people attacked him, and he killed dozens of them in a flash. Although this kid looks young, he’s ruthless. It’s very likely that he’s the one who killed Slanca."
"How did you find him?"
The crisp sound of ’click-click’ carried over the line, as though someone was clipping their nails.
"Didn’t you ask me to take over Slanca’s intelligence network?" the man said with an ingratiating smile,
"First, I took the surveillance photos from Slanca’s apartment and asked the local snakes in Aston District if they had seen a kid in a jacket and duckbill cap. Then I heard that a quite famous intermediary in Aston District, known as Noad, just happened to die yesterday morning.
Deaths are a normal occurrence here in Aston District, but coincidentally, this man Noad was an important contact of Slanca’s. So I started by investigating the remaining forces of this intermediary."
Then his tone rose slightly, with a hint of seeking credit, "As it turns out, Noad was killed by this kid. Although the remaining subordinates didn’t get a clear look at this kid’s face, his attire when meeting Noad was pretty similar to when he met Slanca. This kid must have gotten information about Slanca from Noad, leading him to seek out Slanca."
"Then I supported someone and helped them unify the remaining forces of Noad, so they could help me find that kid."
"So you found him?"
The voice on the other end of the phone asked, chuckling softly.
"Yes, I originally thought it would take some time, but who would have known that the boy was still flaunting through the city in the same attire and was recognized by those people."
At this point, the man became somewhat stammering, "I was planning to use the remnants of Noad’s forces to directly take the kid out, but these people were like chickens and dogs, crumbled at the first sign of trouble."
"It’s not that easy to take out someone who can kill Slanca."
The person on the line laughed and then suddenly changed the subject, "Enough hiding, tell me everything you saw."
"Okay, okay."
The man hastily recounted everything that had just happened, including Jack handing over a blank card to He Ao.
In the process, he had also made a call to find an informant who had been hiding in the corner, and was able to roughly reconstruct the conversation between He Ao and Jack.
In the end, he sent over photos of He Ao taken secretly by the informant.
"I’ve just compared it with our database, we have this kid’s information in there. His name is Joey, the child of the two workers who died in the Avis Machinery Factory mechanical arm malfunction incident," the man said tentatively after summarizing,
"But where did he get such strong power from? The records show that up until a few days ago, he was still an ordinary person."
"In this world, there are always some lucky ones who receive ’Grace’."
The voice on the line laughed noncommittally, "But the vast majority of ’Grace’ comes with a hefty price. Kids who suddenly gain power like this tend to act impulsively on big matters, thinking they are the chosen heroes of legend,"
Then light footsteps came through the phone, "Keep an eye on him, I’ll be right there. You guys are no match for him, anyone who dares to kill me better be prepared to face death."
"Yes, yes."
The man hurriedly nodded in agreement.
Then he waited for the person on the other end to hang up the phone before he dared to straighten up and look out the window.
The taxi carrying the young man had already disappeared at the end of the street.
——
He Ao opened his wrist device and started searching for materials related to ’Avis Machinery Factory’ and ’mechanical arm accidents’.
But the search results were mostly dubious things, many of which were recruitment advertisements for Avis Machinery Factory, and advertorials written by Avis Energy Group.
In fact, Joey had searched through these materials countless times before.
Most of the content that came up was either irrelevant or advertisements for the Avis Group, and it was impossible to see any negative news about Avis Machinery Factory in the first dozen pages.
And most people feel tired after flipping through five pages.
But He Ao was patient, and he continued to flip through the pages one by one.
The search engine’s ranking method often sorts by relevance, the further back, the lower the relevance to the keywords, and the more irrelevant redundant information.
He Ao activated Super Memory and kept flipping down.
Finally, on the two hundred and fifty-seventh page, a post appeared before his eyes.
[Avis Machinery Factory Mechanical Arm Explosion Incident]
Clicking on it revealed a small news article from a small news website, which said the accident took place not in Dawn City, but in Anksai City.
The article roughly stated that a mechanical arm at the Avis Machinery Factory in that city suddenly exploded and was damaged during operation. Fortunately, the operator was outside seeking help at the time, so there were no casualties.
Avis Machinery Factory responded to the incident, claiming it was due to operator error leading to the mechanical arm malfunction, and expressed that it would not pursue the operator’s responsibility.
