As the first light of dawn spread along the city skyline and filled the land, a young man standing in the morning light, dragging a huge suitcase, activated his wristband and hailed a taxi.
The vehicle arrived quickly. After He Ao got in, he turned on his wristband and continued to browse the web.
"Navigating to Avis Machinery Factory for you,"
the gentle voice of the autonomous driving system filled the car.
Unmanned taxis were cheaper than those with drivers.
He Ao looked at the news on his wristband,
[Mayor’s popular candidate Christos’ major speech]
[—To be held at Kwei District’s Kweil Avenue on the 3rd]
That’s today, the 3rd.
He Ao leaned back in the rear seat, his eyes slightly closed.
His mind began to replay the encounter he had last night at his residence in Slanca.
Especially the last phone call, which based on the tone, appeared to be from Slanca’s superior, and was quite authoritative.
Having such undeniable authority over a D-level Transcendent showed that the caller’s own strength was not weak, likely far surpassing Slanca, and perhaps had even reached C-level.
And at the beginning of the call, the words spoken had been highly informative.
First, he mentioned that Slanca had contacted an assassin. The term used was ’assassin’.
Typically, the underground world would use the words ’hitman’ or ’scavenger’ rather than ’assassin’.
Unless, this ’assassin’ is not referring to a professional killer, but is another type of pseudonym.
As it happened, He Ao had seen this term before – in the reward options at the end of his third official mission.
Talent Sequence 56: Assassin, a D-level talent, likely an advanced sequence to ’Talent Sequence 29: Mercenary’.
Actually, by this point, the trajectory of the ’Assassin’ in the D, E, and F levels of Talent Sequences had been determined.
Talent Sequence 7: Onlooker (F-level) — Talent Sequence 29: Mercenary (E-level) — Talent Sequence 56: Assassin (D-level)
As for the higher C-level, He Ao had no clues yet, but this didn’t impede his thought process.
If Slanca had indeed contacted a D-level Assassin, his purpose became very clear. He wouldn’t hire an assassin to cook at his place.
With that level and Talent Sequence, it was obviously for a killing mission.
And such a high-level Transcendent would at least have to target someone D-level or even higher.
Most of the people Slanca was responsible for were below E-level, and only two individuals were D-level or above.
The first was Viktor, whom Slanca had marked as ’suspected C-level’. However, Viktor was only in the [Investigation] folder with the least attention, so it’s unlikely he would be targeted by Slanca’s hired assassin.
The other one was Christos.
He was placed in the [Eradication] folder, with the strength level noted as [C-level].
He Ao leaned against the soft seat and turned his gaze to the window.
Christos really doesn’t have it easy.
Last time at the Nord Building, the Witch Church wanted to assassinate him. Now, the Avis Energy Group has hired an assassin to take him down again.
And that’s just what He Ao knew of. In the parts unknown to He Ao, this guy might have faced who knows how many assassination attempts.
However, with his C-level strength, he should be more than capable of handling the vast majority of assassinations with ease.
He Ao rubbed his brow and focused his gaze on the television outside.
The huge television screen was displaying a luxury apartment turned into charred ruins, and a well-dressed presenter was explaining the news,
"Last night, a violent explosion occurred on No. 37 Street in the Crown District. Two charred bodies and one damaged mechanized body were found at the scene. The owner of the house where the explosion occurred is missing, and currently, the case is under further investigation.
The Dawn City Police Chief, York, suggests that everyone pays attention to safety when going out and tries to avoid dangerous areas."
He Ao withdrew his gaze.
The explosion in the Crown District was reported on the news just hours later, but the fierce gun battle in the Aston District and those bodies lying in the corner were ignored by everyone.
However, he was not worried about this explosion. He was law-abiding and it was self-defense.
Entering the house was at the invitation of Slanca, with no illegal entry, and taking the bodies and Transcendent items away was to prevent pollution from the Transcendent items and to protect the public. In any case, it was a righteous act of bravery.
The taxi came to a slow halt, and He Ao pushed open the door, pulling out his suitcase from the trunk.
A wide, majestic, and even somewhat opulent steel gate appeared before him.
The Avis Machinery Factory.
When he saw the huge steel sign, He Ao was momentarily lost in thought.
Joey was not visiting for the first time; in fact, after his parents’ accident, he had been to the Avis Machinery Factory many times to settle their affairs.
Before his parents’ accident, Joey even felt a sense of familiarity with the Avis Machinery Factory, because his parents worked there.
But after his parents’ accident, when he looked at this huge steel gate, all he felt was a faint sadness.
He Ao didn’t enter the Avis Machinery Factory but walked straight ahead.
The Avis Machinery Factory was located on Kweil Avenue, and this was also where Christos was giving his speech today.
A dense crowd surrounded the entire wide street, and in the center of it all, on the stage, stood a man in a silver suit, tall and handsome, in front of the microphone.
He tapped the microphone and the deafening sound immediately attracted everyone’s attention.
"Those standing here are workers from nearby factories, some are from the Avis Machinery Factory, some from Nord Chemical Plant, and some from Welme Lighting Factory," Christos said with a smile, glancing at the people below, then he paused,
"Of course, I know you’ve come to hear my speech today not because I am particularly attractive, but because of the bread flour around Mr. Knar."
Loud laughter erupted from the crowd.
He Ao shifted his gaze to the side, where at the edge of the stage, a huge truck was parked, emblazoned with a poster of Christos and a large banner reading,
[Bread flour, anyone in need can come take a bag.]
The poster had bread flour in large bags.
He Ao looked away and surveyed the surrounding crowd.
Many people’s gazes were still fixed on the truckload of bread flour.
A bag of bread flour wasn’t cheap; for Joey’s family back in the day, it would suffice for half a month’s source of bread.
He Ao’s eyes returned to the stage, where Christos had begun his speech.
"Eight hundred years ago, Dawn City was established amidst the ruins of darkness, and the builders of Dawn City and the Federation designed the system of Dawn City, laying the foundation for hundreds of years of prosperity. In those hard yet glorious times, the forefathers walked hand in hand, supporting each other against the encroachment of the wilderness.
"Back then, Dawn City, belonged to everyone."
