Chapter 1407: Chapter 1407: Permission (Long Chapter for Monthly Passes)

"In front is a restricted airspace," the pilot landed the helicopter in a wide plaza and looked at He Ao, "Mr. Paxiu, to reach the South Gate, we’ve arranged off-road vehicles just outside the plaza. We can get in them as soon as we walk out."

"Alright." He Ao turned around and got off the helicopter.

The pilot followed him and got off the helicopter as well.

He looked up at He Ao walking naturally ahead and scratched his head.

According to the unwritten rules within the Federal Bureau of Investigation, witnesses like ’Paxiu’, who have some ’criminal suspicion’, should be monitored while in a free state of movement without detention.

So he needed to be with Paxiu, ensuring the other party remained in a ’monitored’ state.

He glanced again at He Ao crossing the plaza smoothly and naturally, heading towards the street.

The other person walked with his head held high, exuding extraordinary dignity, and now seemed not in a ’monitored’ state, but rather being ’followed’ by him instead.

But then again, the chief following him also seemed like a little sidekick.

So there was no problem.

He quickly caught up with He Ao and matched his pace.

He Ao didn’t pay attention to the pilot’s actions but instead scanned the plaza they were standing on with his gaze.

The cracked plaza ground, the old, densely packed low-rise buildings, the dark alleyways between the low-rise buildings, and the decrepit hovels squeezed at the edge of those alleyways.

Everything was the same as when he came here for ’business’ many years ago.

After all these years, Denno City’s South Gate hadn’t changed much, only becoming more dilapidated.

He Ao quickly moved through the alleyway.

The closely packed low-rise buildings stood side by side like shoulder-to-shoulder figures, leaving only a thin strip of a gray sky, and below the sky, a space filled with chaotic, intertwined power lines.

Rows of windows hung with burglar bars were densely arranged among those wires, revealing narrow divided spaces within the buildings.

When he first saw these buildings, they were filled with freshness and wonder, amazed at how differently the people of Denno City lived compared to those in the wilderness.

But over the years, people living in these buildings still curled up in dirty darkness, without seeing the light of day.

Back then, Paxiu thought that the election of the old president might change everything, but this year marked the last year of the old president’s two-term eight-year tenure.

Eyes opened in the darkness of the hovels, watching the two uninvited outsiders.

The pilot rested his hand on his waist, calmly watching the surrounding figures.

He was well aware that in this neighborhood, order did not exist, gangs and a unique underground order dominated here.

If they didn’t possess enough strength, a group of thugs would emerge from the seemingly weak crowd to rob them of all their possessions.

But when those eyes saw the pilot’s uniform and his hand on his waist, they quickly withdrew.

The two quickly passed through the narrow alleyways, reached the street outside, and found the off-road vehicle parked here by the FBI agent.

The surrounding streets had already seen chaotic crowds, standing on the streets, looking around.

In the not-far-damaged giant screen, with lines of static, a segment of emergency notice from the FBI was being broadcast.

The notice was simple: There was suspicion that exotic beasts were approaching the southern part of Denno City, urging residents living near the South Gate to leave the area as quickly as possible and return after the crisis ended.

The distance from their current location to the South Gate was still a bit far, so the people on the roads weren’t too panicked, whispering to each other.

He Ao got into the off-road vehicle, and the pilot naturally took the driver’s seat, started the vehicle, and quickly headed towards outside the South Gate.

As the off-road vehicle gradually headed south, the streets also started showing some people carrying belongings, slowly leaving the area near the South Gate.

"Receiving an emergency notice, a powerful exotic beast is about to pass outside the South Gate. Citizens, please temporarily leave the nearby area and follow the main road to the Red Maple District for safety." It was repeated, "Please temporarily leave the nearby area, fellow citizens..."

It appeared that an FBI vehicle with a large external speaker was broadcasting the evacuation notice between the streets.

As He Ao watched the scattered crowd heading north upon hearing the notice, his wristband rang.

"Paxiu, can you hear me?" With the phone connected, Vigina’s voice came through, "I’m currently directing FBI agents near the South Gate to issue evacuation notices. The city government has agreed to have the City Police Bureau cooperate with our actions."

"I see," He Ao said with a slow laugh, "Well done."

"That doesn’t sound like something you would say," Vigina seemed to chuckle and shake her head, "But starting to praise people now seems a bit premature,"

She sighed lightly and continued, "Now comes the bad news. The Commander of the City Defense Army at the South Gate and the city government refuse to cooperate with us to close the South Gate because it would block the ’trade route.’

"Aren’t the majority of the trade caravans entering and leaving Denno City’s South Gate those of the Kewort Group?" He Ao realized the implication behind Vigina’s words, "The city government and City Defense Army are afraid of affecting the Kewort Group’s ’business’?"

"Yes," Vigina nodded, "According to the intelligence I’ve gathered, the Mayor’s campaign committee received a large amount of political donations from the Kewort Group. They don’t dare to touch the Kewort Group’s trade caravans."

She paused slightly, "However, they didn’t completely refuse. The City Cabinet said they are willing to sign the closure order as long as the Commander of the City Defense Army at the South Gate, meaning the Minister of City Defense, is willing to close the gate."

She let out a bitter smile, "And then comes the biggest problem: the Commander of the City Defense Army at the South Gate refuses to close the gate over the phone, saying there’s no trace of exotic beast activity, asserting I’m being unreasonable, and even requests that the city government cancel the evacuation order."

"It seems like this Commander of the City Defense Army at the South Gate is entirely with the Kewort Group?" He Ao asked slowly.

"Yes," Vigina sighed lightly, "He originally worked in the Kewort Group’s security department, later leaving the department and joining the City Defense Army. With the ’help’ of the Kewort Group, he smoothly became the Commander of the South Gate City Defense Army and also became the Minister of City Defense in this term’s City Cabinet."

She slowly added, "From the information I’ve gathered, this person is extremely close to the Kewort Group, very greedy, and almost never does anything against the interests of the Kewort Group."

"Can those executives of the Kewort Group influence his decision?" He Ao asked slowly.

Almost all the executives with real power in the Kewort Group are currently in the FBI Building.

"I tried," Vigina shook her head, "That guy said these executives can’t represent the Kewort Group unless the CEO of the Denno branch, Colin, calls him, or I get a ’resolution’ from the Kewort Group’s board of directors confirming that closing the gate doesn’t affect the trade caravans, only then would he close the gate.

"Now the CEO of the branch is kidnapped, and we have no way to contact the headquarters of the Kewort Group’s board, which is basically an impossible request,"

She couldn’t help grinding her teeth slightly, "This guy is managing the City Defense Army established with Denno City’s tax revenue while earning Denno City’s salary, yet he’s working for the Kewort Group, not even pretending otherwise."

"Looks like the Kewort Group is indeed offering a significant price," He Ao sighed lightly, then asked, "Did you ask the city government about anything related to the Dark Lizard? The situation has progressed to this point; they shouldn’t be remaining silent?"

He hadn’t told Vigina to inquire about this, but he knew she would certainly ask relevant questions.

"They said some things, but not everything," Vigina answered slowly, "They only mentioned there’s something that can drive away the Dark Lizard and prevent it from attacking the city. The Mayor said they would send people to activate this thing, and it would take effect in no more than ten minutes."

"That’s good," He Ao nodded slightly, "We can discuss the details later."

"By the way," at this point, Vigina hesitated for a moment and quickly said, "there’s another issue; the city government is too afraid to grant you an exit permit, and the City Defense Army at the South Gate isn’t willing to let you pass either. They’re afraid they can’t bear the responsibility if you escape afterward, even if I stand as your guarantor, it’s no use,"

She paused briefly, "But I found you a Kewort Group transport convoy, departing in about an hour. If you disguise yourself, you should be able to blend in and follow them out of the city."

After speaking, she said somewhat apprehensively, "Sorry, I couldn’t handle things well. These politicians are more cowardly than I imagined."

"It’s not your fault," He Ao shook his head and smiled, "It’s normal for this to happen."

From the start, he knew there was a high chance Vigina wouldn’t get his exit permit; his identity was too sensitive.

He glanced at the ever-growing crowd of evacuating people outside the window and the towering, imposing buildings behind them. He spoke softly, "But there’s no need to sneak out, that would waste too much time."

"Then how will you···?" Vigina was slightly taken aback.

He Ao lifted his head, looked at the building straight ahead, and softly asked, "Is that the South City Defense Army Command Center? Is the South City Defense Army Commander inside?"

"Yes." The pilot driving the car glanced at the building in front and nodded slightly.

"I’ll step out for a bit, be right back. Keep driving, no need to stop." He Ao, sitting in the back, casually opened the car door and said softly.

Hearing He Ao’s words, the pilot was momentarily stunned and didn’t immediately react.

By the time he came back to his senses, the spacious backseat was already empty.

——

Denno City South City Defense Army Command Center

Bang——

A portly man in military uniform slammed the microphone back onto its base, sneering, "Those FBI bitches, sticking their noses into my city defense affairs, without even looking in the mirror to see what they are."

He casually picked up a golden snake ornament from the table and toyed with it, "What Dark Lizard passing through? Such a big exotic beast, I wouldn’t have heard a peep about it?"

He glanced at the young officer standing beside him, "Do you think those city government guys are also spineless cowards? They got scared into wetting themselves by some woman and just stood there ordering the crowd to evacuate."

"Yes, yes." The young officer immediately nodded.

"I’m telling you, these city government people are idiots, just fence-sitters. They take money from the group but don’t do any work for them, trying to please both sides," the man spat, "And they say if I don’t open the gate and something happens, I’ll be responsible."

He continued fiddling with the ornament, "Why should I be responsible? I’m telling you, there are no exotic beasts."

He looked down at the golden snake in his hand, a trace of yellow light flowing across the snake’s body, smirked coldly, "Even if there was an exotic beast, so what? Dark Lizard, it’s all just exaggerated talk. Who knows if it’s a Dark Lizard, and even if it is, it’s just a slightly stronger exotic beast."

He gripped the golden snake in his hand, "I could crush it with a flick of my hand, and as for that ’Paxiu,’ the guy who dared to assassinate the president wants me to let him go, it’s insanely stupid, trying to dig a hole for me,"

His voice grew even colder, "And they say I must let him out, or face the consequences,"

Bang——

He slammed the golden snake onto the table, glanced at the high wall outside the window, and gave a cold laugh, "Nobody has been born who dares to threaten me. Let Paxiu come and say it to my face if he’s got the guts!"

"Ahem," a light cough sounded behind him, followed by an icy voice, "What do you want to chat about?"

In that instant, the man’s face froze, and his rotund body jumped like a rabbit into the corner of the office.

He looked to where the young officer had been, only to find the officer had somehow been knocked out, lying unconscious on the ground.

He raised his head and saw a figure carrying a curved sword and a long wooden-handled rifle, his body stiffened, and he suddenly shouted, "Help! Enemy attack!!"

But amid his loud shouts, the outside was deathly silent.

"Heh, you think you can threaten me!!!?" The man looked at He Ao and sneered, suddenly gripping the golden snake in his hand.

Boom——

With a thunderous crash, the golden snake flew from the man’s hand, growing in the wind, transforming into a huge golden serpent, its terrifying presence instantly ripping apart the surrounding desks, tearing cracks in the floor and walls.

Yet He Ao seemed oblivious to the golden snake, continuing to take a step forward.

The golden snake flicked its tongue, emitting a dim glow, opening its giant mouth, about to swallow He Ao whole.

He Ao moved forward slowly, reached out, grasped the snake’s lower jaw, and swiftly pushed it upward, closing its giant golden maw in an instant.

Boom——

He held the giant snake like wielding a whip, swung the snake’s body, and coiled it around the man not far away, smashing through walls and the room with a loud rumble.

Howling cold wind blew in from the broken space outside.

The man’s body, along with He Ao, rapidly descended along the breached ground.

Boom——

The two smashed into the huge square, throwing up countless debris and dust, creating a giant pit.

He Ao waved gently, and the golden snake, which had borne terrible force, shattered, dissolving into a scattering of yellow light.

The man in military attire curled up on the ground like a lump of meat, trembling as he watched He Ao approach step by step.

"You’re Paxiu, aren’t you!" He raised his hand, shouting in panic, "I’ll give you a city exit pass, I’ll vouch for you!!!"

But He Ao’s steps did not pause.

"Close the city gate!" The man cried hoarsely again, "I’ll contact the city government immediately, agree to close the city gate. No, no, I’ll directly give the order, letting them close the city gate, all listen to you, all listen to you!!! I’ll give the order right in front of you!!!"

He hurriedly raised his bracelet, went through identity verification, and after several wrong password entries, finally issued the order.

Then he trembled as he raised his hand to show He Ao his command.

But He Ao’s steps still did not stop, continuing to approach him slowly.

"Don’t kill me! Don’t kill me!" He instinctively curled his body, starting to tremble.

He Ao stopped in front of him, reached out, patted his disheveled uniform, and gently asked, "Don’t be afraid, I’m just defending myself, no malicious intent. Did I threaten you?"

"No! No!" He cried out immediately, his voice tinged with sobs, "Everything was my choice! All my choice! I’ll give the order right away, right away!"

The cold wind swept across the square, blowing across the fat man’s trembling face.

······

The pilot driving the car felt a tremor in the vehicle. He raised his head and glanced in the rearview mirror.

At some point, the spacious backseat was no longer empty, the figure with a curved sword and wooden-handled rifle sat there quietly, looking out the window.

As if he had never left.
