Chapter 1248: Chapter 1248: Suote’s Father (Vote for Monthly Ticket)
"Actually, you don’t need to explain,"
He Ao gazed at the blonde young man and spoke softly, "I just noticed your questioning ability is quite strong, not like someone who received formal education. Plus, you went out of your way to emphasize elementary school textbooks. So I casually asked. I have to admit, your ability to question is indeed remarkable."
Upon hearing He Ao’s words, the blonde young man opened his mouth, but no sound emerged for a moment.
He stared at He Ao’s face, distinctly feeling the sincerity in He Ao’s words. He Ao genuinely believed his "questioning ability" was strong, and the sentiment seemed to carry a slight tone of praise.
This left him unsure whether He Ao was mocking him or genuinely praising him.
Nevertheless, he wasn’t planning to delve too deeply into the topic. Over the years, during his "preaching," he’d been ridiculed by too many people.
Calming his emotions, he gazed at He Ao with a faint smile, "Of course, I know you must think I’m just dreaming foolishly, questioning endlessly."
"I think some of what you’ve said makes a lot of sense,"
He Ao replied calmly, "Given the Federation’s technological advancements, it’s indeed strange that they aren’t exploring the universe, and that astronomy is nearly extinct."
Before the blonde young man mentioned this, He Ao had already been somewhat influenced by the memories of his roles.
Although he’d traversed many dungeon worlds and accumulated vast knowledge and memories related to the Federation, his perspective had been constrained by these roles.
Despite the ability of different roles to complement one another, addressing parts of blind spots, there were "cognitive blind spots" shared by all roles, and He Ao was similarly affected.
Astronomy and the starlit sky constituted such a "blind spot."
The Main World had complete disciplines and research dedicated to cosmic exploration. Besides astronomy-related knowledge of the Main World itself, He Ao had even encountered a spacecraft suspected to be Original Federation-made, the "Navigator," and once saw a "man-made sun" suspended above ancient ruins.
These entities proved that the Original Federation had robust capabilities in "cosmic exploration," perhaps even surpassing the Main World significantly.
But in dungeon worlds, within the "Federation," almost all of the characters lacked knowledge related to astronomy. The dungeon characters themselves showed no interest in astronomy, and He Ao, having absorbed their memories, inevitably fell into this same pattern of neglect.
He hadn’t even truly looked up at the stars overhead or pondered why a dungeon world with such advanced technological prowess had not pierced through and explored the sky above.
Of course, this layer of "cognitive obstacle" was not particularly thick for him. As soon as the blonde young man mentioned it, He Ao quickly grasped the idea.
Which made him genuinely believe that the young man’s questioning ability was strong. Oftentimes, breakthroughs in knowledge constrained by cognition were achieved precisely through seemingly "baseless" questioning.
He Ao gazed at the blonde young man before him.
But after so many years, in a Federation with such a vast population, could it really be that only these Starlight Worshipers had noticed this anomaly?
Or was there some sort of special power enshrouding the Federation, instinctively nudging people to "ignore" the starlit skies?
And these Starlight Worshipers, due to the unique nature of their faith, were somehow exempt from this power?
If such power could cover such a large area, how terrifying would it have to be? Did such a power truly exist?
Or was it that the Federation government had employed some special methods to suppress people’s exploration of starlight?
Upon hearing He Ao’s words, the blonde young man leaned closer attentively, carefully scrutinizing He Ao’s face to ensure there was no trace of mockery. Instead, he sighed softly and said,
"Human beings are limited by their own cognition, unable to fathom the truths of the world. Even many of my subordinates merely think of the great Lord of the Starry Sky as a weird god to blindly and mindlessly worship.
"And then you have all the schemers joining us, turning the organization into chaos.
"Unexpectedly, the first time I simply stated a belief and got genuine recognition was from you,"
He stared at He Ao, his gaze focused and slightly crazed as he spoke in a low voice, "Join us, child. I can tell you have that strong spirit of exploration. This is my sincere invitation: if I die, my current position will be yours."
"Only partial recognition,"
He Ao corrected him softly, then lowered his gaze slightly and asked calmly, "Back then, when you invited my father to join, did you use the same words?"
"Ah, your father,"
The blonde young man snapped out of his fervent focus upon hearing his question. Looking at He Ao, he shook his head slightly, "No. Your father was very smart, but when he joined the organization, he was very weak. He was brought in by one of my subordinates and started out as a peripheral member, the most ordinary type.
"Yet, when I first met him, I saw a certain ’ambition’ in his eyes."
He chuckled softly and said in a low voice,
"I adore people with ’ambition,’ even if their faith isn’t particularly devoted.
"Ambition is like tinder hiding in the grassland; when the time comes, it can ignite the full expanse.
"I deliberately promoted him, gave him room to develop, and guided him to learn about our Lord.
"His faith was not firm—I understood that well. He had other thoughts in his mind, things I couldn’t discern. But I knew his heart wasn’t truly invested in the faith.
"Yet he was unwaveringly devout. To earn the favor of divinity, he ventured boldly into the most perilous places of the wilderness, relying on a body far from robust to explore the deadliest terrains.
"He was fortunate to stumble upon an extraordinary item with ties to fate. It enabled him to survive many grim situations,"
The blonde young man raised his head to look at He Ao, smiling as he asked, "Do you know how long it took him to ascend from a disabled ordinary person to a B-level Transcendent?"
He paused slightly and held up three fingers, "Three years."
He lowered his hand, his gaze fixed on He Ao’s countenance, his words tinged with emotion,
"A realm unattainable to many in a lifetime—he reached it in just three years.
"And this was after starting as a disabled individual who had never touched any Transcendent power."
He sighed, "The most brutal methods of promotion, and the most unrelenting grace from the Divine Being."
He raised a finger and pressed it against his temple.
Under He Ao’s gaze, that finger forcefully pushed into the temple, and blood began gushing out.
"Our Lord’s thoughts differ from ours, so to endure His power requires enduring His will. The harshest promotion methods will make one increasingly resemble the divine,"
The blonde young man pressed against his temple as blood continued to flow freely, his demeanor unaffected, "Pain like this—hundreds or thousands of times worse—was endured by your father every single moment.
"Such torment cannot simply be sustained by ambition or desire. By then, I knew for sure—there was a certain ’obsession’ within him, something he couldn’t relinquish, a fixation powerful enough to withstand such horrors."
"So you had Wistain monitor my father?"
He Ao gazed at the blonde young man, his even tone offering no hint of emotion.
"Wistain, huh. So you’ve met him,"
The blonde young man sighed faintly, glancing toward the cemetery gate not far away, "Since you’re here, he’s already dead."
He then paused, retracted his gaze, and continued,
"Wistain was originally a caravan guard rescued by your father during an expedition into the wilderness. After your father left, Wistain managed to trace the clues back to us and joined our ranks.
"Seeing his connection to your father, I assigned him to assist your father.
"Your father was initially unwilling, but eventually kept him. As your father grew more powerful and made greater contributions, his status within the organization rose accordingly.
"While I was promoting him, I also tasked Wistain with keeping an eye on your father. Quite amusing, really,"
The blonde young man gave He Ao a playful look and smiled,
"Wistain possessed ’ambition’ too—I could see the hunger for power in his eyes,
"Unlike your father, his ambition was pure greed.
"With him, I didn’t need to offer any incentives. Just a hint of my mistrust in your father was enough for Wistain to do everything possible to uncover issues with your father, hoping to betray him and prove his loyalty to me.
"Even though he owed his entire rise to your father,"
He looked at He Ao, "I take it you’ve gotten some details from Wistain about what happened later?"
"My father used his high-ranking privileges to secretly review the data you hid,"
He Ao stated calmly, "He was discovered by the tracking Wistain. Likewise, my father discovered Wistain but chose to spare him, acknowledging their past. However, the result was Wistain betraying my father by informing you, leading to my father’s death at your hands, his Talent Sequence and Extraordinary Items given to Wistain."
The blonde young man nodded slightly, "Rather thorough,"
He looked at He Ao with a smirk, "I imagine extracting this information from Wistain wasn’t exactly ’pleasant’ for him."
He Ao didn’t respond, only calmly gazing at the blonde young man.
"Ah, I truly did like your father,"
The blonde young man sighed, "After him, I haven’t met anyone as exceptional. I even somewhat regret killing him."
"So, what exactly was the data my father was investigating?"
He Ao fixed his gaze on the blonde young man and asked softly.
"If you’re willing to join us, I believe you’ll quickly rise to your father’s position and uncover those secrets,"
The blonde young man replied casually with a smile, "Of course, assuming that when you snoop through documents, I don’t catch you. But I might consider pretending not to notice and letting it slide."
"Or we could explore another possibility,"
He Ao stared at him, smiling faintly, "I’ll simply kill you, then I won’t need to worry about being caught."
"You, kill me?"
The blonde young man blinked, briefly puzzled, before laughing, "Do you have some misconception about your own strength? I left the Glorious Palace not because I feared it but because I was collecting some things, not running away."
He narrowed his eyes slightly, gazing at He Ao, "With your current abilities, even if that brat can wield the suspiciously divine power from earlier, the two of you combined aren’t enough to take me down."
"I’ve always believed one thing,"
He Ao looked at the blonde young man, smiling as well, "You only know once you try."
His gaze dropped slightly, "Besides, I think I can guess what my father was investigating."
His abyssal gaze seemed to pierce through, nailing onto the blonde young man. He spoke slowly, word by word, "Thirty-four years ago, the Stars Pharma caravan massacre—was it done by you?"
"Do you want to know?"
The blonde young man raised an eyebrow.
In the next instant, his figure shattered into countless starlight fragments, like radiant ribbons, surging forward.
His velocity was so swift that before He Ao could react, the starlight was already closing in on the three Secret Silver Boxes.
This was the "blonde young man’s" preparation—a kind of special "accelerated" secret technique.
His willingness to converse so extensively with He Ao had been a ploy to prepare this technique.
At this light-like speed, the lead He Ao gained by advancing a step or two was almost negligible.
The surging starlight rapidly opened its "arms," attempting to "embrace" the three Secret Silver Boxes.
Yet in that instant, the three boxes seemed to grow legs of their own, abruptly retreating and streaking toward the sky in three separate directions.
The starlight figure’s body lunged forward, missing its target completely. Yet, his actions didn’t pause, immediately pursuing the direction where the middle box retreated.
However, at this moment, a blood-stained luminescence had already manifested before him.
He Ao calmly faced the immense starlight figure that had swelled to several meters in size, slowly extending his hand to grip the blood-red hilt behind him.
The three Secret Silver Boxes rested not far behind, nestled in the shadowy depths of the dense forest, seemingly hinting to the starlight figure that breaking through the obstacle ahead would lead him directly to them.
While the blonde young man was preparing his accelerated secret technique, He Ao had also done something during their conversation.
He Ao had channeled his Divine Sense into the ground beneath him, attaching it to nearby small stones and transferring it to the vicinity of the Secret Silver Boxes.
This operation needed to be carefully controlled to avoid alerting the blonde young man, requiring slow, deliberate execution—which took time.
Fortunately, the blonde young man’s lengthy speech provided exactly the time He Ao required.
Although mithril slightly impeded Divine Sense, the three Secret Silver Boxes weren’t entirely coated in mithril. He Ao quickly infiltrated them, asserting control.
When magic could be employed, He Ao didn’t intend to brute-force his way to seize the items. His advance steps served merely as a diversion.
Whoosh—
The blood-drenched blade emerged from its sheath with a chilling hum as icy night winds swept past the starlight figure and the bleeding man’s face.
A crimson spectral silhouette slowly began to take shape between heaven and earth.
