Chapter 1224: Chapter 1224: Muted Beasts, Fierce Struggles (Vote for Monthly Pass)
"Our energy supply only allows for one chance."
The soldiers froze for a moment. In the next instant, they all straightened up and immediately responded, "Yes, sir!"
Their figures quickly moved back, heading toward their mechas.
The green barrier in the sky trembled violently, with countless fine cracks spreading rapidly, as if it could shatter at any moment.
He Ao knew his soldiers had reached their limits. Did the opposing commander know this?
He did.
The opposing soldiers were likely also nearing their limits after the continuous assaults.
So this time, the opposing commander wasn’t in a hurry to launch another attack. Instead, he was gathering as many troops as possible, preparing for a decisive blow to crush the soldiers defending the Northern Gate.
To completely snap that taut string.
Judging by the density of ammunition raining from above, it was likely that the enemy had saved much of their firepower for this final moment.
This was the final battle.
Boom—
Under He Ao’s gaze, the pale green barrier shattered with a deafening crash. The glowing lines across the canyon went dark, and countless missiles plunged through the flames, heading straight into the canyon.
Bang! Bang! Bang!—
Anti-aircraft guns roared to life, spewing flames and noise to intercept the missiles hurtling through the sky.
Before He Ao, the massive black-and-white mecha powered up, its "eyes" glowing with light.
He Ao lowered his head, glancing at the jade box before him. Reaching out, he picked it up, then leaped into the cockpit of his mecha.
His head lifted as his gaze passed through the swiftly closing cockpit door, locking onto the missiles that had evaded the anti-aircraft fire.
One hand gripped the mecha’s control stick while the other raised the Chaos Magic Wand.
Boom! Boom! Boom!—
Missiles exploded one after another in the sky. The black-and-white mecha sealed its cockpit door and surged skyward, leading the mecha platoon into the inferno engulfing the sky.
——
"Captain, the frontline troops will assemble in approximately five minutes."
A young soldier lifted his head, looking at the man in a gray military uniform before him.
"Increase covering fire,"
the man in the gray uniform calmly lifted his head, gazing at the sky. "Use up all the remaining ammunition. They’re running low. Shatter their shell and send the troops into the canyon. Kill every last resister."
"Yes, sir!"
The young soldier immediately acknowledged.
At this moment, the gray-uniformed man’s gaze dropped. Looking at the communications officer ahead, he continued without pause, "Open the full-corps broadcast."
"Opening full-corps broadcast now."
The communications officer immediately reached out, flicking a switch in front of him and pushing the volume level to its maximum.
"Brothers of the Mercenary Corps,"
the man in the gray uniform lifted his gaze toward the raging flames atop the mountains ahead. "I am your commander, Wistain. The final battle is upon us. I will send massive firepower and missile support your way,
"Our firepower is enough to destroy their shell, to pierce their barriers.
"Now is the time for you to make your mark.
"The enemies in the canyon—for every standard soldier killed, there’s a reward of ten thousand federal coins. For every minor leader killed, fifty thousand federal coins. For killing fifty-man leaders or similar commanders, the bonus is one hundred fifty thousand federal coins. As for killing their figureheads, it’s five hundred thousand federal coins."
His voice was steady and firm, reverberating in everyone’s ears like the rumbling of thunder. "Whoever kills Suote will receive a bounty of ten million federal coins."
The soldiers in the command room froze slightly upon hearing this.
The roar of distant engines seemed to pierce through the night, echoing in every ear, resonating in every chest.
"Do not fear their healing arts. The dead cannot rise again. All you need is to kill your enemies as swiftly as possible, and their spells will be meaningless."
The voice of the gray-uniformed man resounded through the silent night, ringing in everyone’s ears.
"A great victory awaits you. A carefree life beckons you—women, fine wine, wealth, status. Whatever you desire, it shall be yours.
"Prepare yourselves. Pick up your guns and claim your victory!"
As his speech ended, the green barrier atop the mountain shattered with a deafening collapse. Those in the command room froze briefly.
"Attack!!!"
In that moment, the gray-uniformed man unhesitatingly gave the command.
The densely packed army across the canyon surged forward like an unchained beast, madly charging ahead.
Countless steel creations, akin to a swarming horde of insects, raced across the canyon expanse.
Amid the blaze, faint gunshots rang out—perhaps the anti-aircraft guns, or sporadic shots fired from within the flames.
Flames erupted from the armored vehicles, pouring forth like torrents. Together with the hail of missiles descending, they rained upon the canyon.
In comparison to this storm of fire, the sporadic gunfire seemed minuscule, as feeble as helpless insects resisting the swoop of a hunting predator.
Boom—
Brilliant firelight flooded the canyon at the moment of impact. Missiles seemed to be seized by an invisible hand, igniting one after another in rapid succession.
The billowing flames filled the sky like vivid clouds, blotting out the vision of everyone on the ground, obscuring the light emanating from the canyon below.
Whoosh—
Amid the violent winds, a black-and-white mecha surged forth from the storm, towering in the space between heaven and earth.
Soon after, Blazing Angel Mechas emerged from the roaring inferno, lining up behind the black-and-white mecha.
Their gazes rose steadily, scrutinizing the densely packed advancing troops ahead.
Then, the lead black-and-white mecha drew the black-and-white giant sword mounted on its back. Like a piercing burst of light, it charged directly into the luminous army.
The Blazing Angel Mechas followed close behind.
This sharp mecha force, once again like a deadly blade, penetrated the glowing forces in an instant, cleaving deep as if effortlessly tearing through the vast army.
But just as the mecha squad had cut one-third into the massive army, numerous pre-positioned mercenary mechas shot out from the formation, intercepting the Blazing Angel unit.
The lead black-and-white mecha raised its sword in a swift motion, instantly obliterating one of the oncoming mercenary mechas, piercing deep into the mercenary formation without obstruction.
Following closely, the other mechas carved sideways into the mercenary formation, forcibly prying open a path amidst the tangle of enemy mechas.
The Blazing Angel Mechas behind them followed in single file, darting through the narrow passage like fish and surging forward with the black-and-white mecha.
However, the mercenary mechas quickly reorganized, sealing off the breached path and cutting it off from behind.
Many mechas were left behind, unable to keep up. Those in front didn’t turn back. No one called after their teammates who had been forced to stay behind or were struck down by enemy fire.
The mechas charged forward without hesitation, unyielding even as their numbers dwindled one by one.
Like blazing torches swallowed by the dark and endless sea.
The raging tide consumed the trembling flames, yet these torches burned with unrelenting force.
Within the transparent windows of the colossal spider-like command mech, silence filled the air as everyone watched the unfolding events on the mountain.
"Why are they doing this?"
In the dreary calm, a young soldier murmured softly.
"Pull the left and right flanks back, form an inverted triangle, and increase the distance between individual units. The enemy’s area attack covers approximately a radius of one hundred meters."
Behind him, the man in the gray military uniform spoke slowly, his expression calm as ever, his gaze cold while observing the battlefield.
Those frigid commands traveled through the broadcast to every soldier.
The enormous army quickly transformed its formation. Soldiers on both sides moved back toward the center, turning the trapezoidal lineup into an inverted triangle.
Troops pushing forward also withdrew, clustering naturally toward the center to block the path of the Blazing Angel unit.
The way ahead stretched longer and longer.
——
Why are they doing this?
He Ao gripped the control stick, maneuvering his mecha coldly and smashing through a series of armored vehicles, fighters, and other mechas.
On the control screen, he could see fewer and fewer mechas beside him.
These pilots had already far exceeded his initial expectations.
He couldn’t turn back. Retreating meant both he and the remaining mechas would be surrounded by the enemy’s expansive tides.
All he could do was eliminate stronger enemies ahead of him, giving the lagging mechas a better chance to endure longer amidst the swarming army.
He had never rallied these mecha pilots. He only knew that on their first mission, they performed admirably and had been personally recommended by Xiya and handpicked by Eve for their elite skills.
Some came from the City Defense Army, others from the Wilderness Wanderer groups.
Within those factions, they hailed from all walks of life—the slums, the middle class, the wealthy quarters; specific families, camps, riversides, or mountain valleys.
They had chosen to unite under He Ao’s command, standing against the two major conglomerates of Minte City.
By all reasoning, their hatred should have been limited to those two conglomerates.
Yet they followed He Ao here, charging into this abyss-like sea of soldiers with him.
Why are they doing this?
Perhaps there was an answer. Or perhaps there wasn’t.
He Ao’s black-and-white greatsword cleaved through a mecha that had emerged from a fighter barrage, slicing it apart.
The sword was already dull, its surface covered with fine cracks.
It had reached its limit during the fight against the Demon Wolves. He Ao hadn’t expected it to hold up this long.
He Ao raised his head, staring at the forces ahead.
He continued to push forward.
As the enemy troops grew denser, the battle lines he needed to break through stretched endlessly longer.
The continuous ranks of soldiers extended almost all the way to the enormous mechanical spider.
Through the thronging army and the massive machine’s transparent window, He Ao could almost make out the gray-uniformed man’s cold gaze fixed on him.
His body pressed onward, plunging deeper into the enemy ranks.
Buzz—
As he shattered a Dragon Cavalry Fighter charging at him, the black-and-white greatsword let out a piercing wail.
Iridescent cracks spiderwebbed its surface, as though it had finally reached its breaking point.
At that moment, a signal came through to the command console.
It was the same soldier who had requested to join the fight earlier.
The young soldier said nothing, merely saluted, hand to his chest.
He Ao glanced at the side monitor.
Unbeknownst to him, only one mecha remained at his rear. That mecha, too, had been blocked off, separated by the endless enemy swarm.
From the opposing army, a mercenary mecha charged toward the soldier.
He Ao stared at the screen, then suddenly manipulated his mecha to lift its arm, hurling the black-and-white greatsword.
The sword pierced the charging mercenary mecha, exploding with a cascade of flames. Fragments of the shattered blade struck approaching Dragon Cavalry Fighters and armored vehicles.
Lowering his gaze, He Ao looked at the startled young soldier on the comm display and said flatly, "Don’t give me that parting-ways crap. Relay this: if you can endure, then hold your ground. Survive, and you’ll live."
The young soldier paused briefly before responding loudly, "Yes, Commander!"
Cutting the comm, He Ao raised his head, eyes fixed ahead on the advancing endless enemy tide.
He rose slowly, picking up the Chaos Magic Wand and resting a hand on the jade box lid. "Eve."
"Here." A gentle voice echoed in the silent cockpit.
He Ao lowered his gaze toward the mechanical spider on the horizon. "We’re going in."
The lone black-and-white mecha moved forward again, plunging into the dense ranks of the enemy.
······
"Has he lost his mind?"
From the command room, a young soldier stared at the black-and-white mecha charging into the heart of the enemy.
Down below, enemy troops redirected their cannons, unleashing a storm of firepower onto the solitary mecha.
"Is he really going to charge all the way in?"
Another soldier, watching with growing unease, asked hesitantly.
"A beast’s dying struggle."
The man in the gray uniform observed calmly.
Boom—
Amid the torrent of flames, the black-and-white mecha finally came to a halt.
Engulfed in fire, with its engines obliterated, it could no longer move.
At this moment, the personnel in the command room collectively sighed in relief.
Yet the man in the gray uniform tilted his head upward, staring at the sky in startled disbelief.
In that instant, the entire world seemed to warp. The uncontrollable and pulsating force,
descended from the heavens.
