Chapter 1221: Chapter 1221: The Holy Grace of Life (Massive Chapter, Requesting Monthly Votes)

Elantra City Western Wilderness

Dense armies advanced swiftly along the abandoned ancient path.

Roger sat atop the tracked transport vehicle, raising his head to gaze into the distance of the vast plains, where faint bright lights flickered in the dark night.

That was Elantra City.

A chilly breeze brushed across his cheeks, forming tiny ice crystals on the strands of his hair.

He withdrew his gaze and glanced briefly at the snow-covered road ahead.

After passing Elantra City and heading further north, Dawn City wouldn’t be far.

He turned back and looked southwest toward the direction they came from.

At the edge of the dim night horizon, faint lights and subtle sounds seemed to be trembling.

That was the direction where another Mercenary Corps under the Nolanka Group had gone.

War seemed to have ignited.

He pulled his gaze back, climbed slowly down the vertical ladder on the side of the transport vehicle, opened the hatch, and entered the cabin.

"Doctor Roger, you’re back?"

The young soldier sitting in the co-pilot’s seat was chewing on an apple. Upon hearing movement from behind, he turned back to look at Roger, removed the apple from his mouth, and smiled, "I kept saying it’s freezing cold outside, isn’t it?"

"Mm."

A faint warm air in the cabin brushed against Roger’s already chilly and pale cheeks. He looked up at the young soldier in the co-pilot seat and asked, "How long until we arrive?"

"Let me check,"

The young soldier glanced down at the dashboard in front of him, then turned back to Roger. "The guidance vehicle reports we might reach the destination tomorrow night,"

Then he seemed to recall something. "Wait, has midnight passed already? So, it’s tonight? Is it this late?"

He took a bite of his apple, yawned, and looked at Roger. "Doctor Roger, there are over ten hours left. Why don’t you get some rest?"

"Alright."

Roger nodded lightly, glanced through the windshield at the densely packed convoy ahead, then turned around to look behind.

In the rear section of the transport vehicle, various packed supplies were neatly arranged, but in the corner on the right side, instead of cargo, there stood a sizable rectangular ’Nutrient Pod.’

Beside the Nutrient Pod was a silver reclining chair.

Roger walked over and sat down in the chair.

"Doctor Roger,"

The young soldier in the co-pilot seat continued chewing on his apple and curiously asked, "What’s inside that big box of ours..."

"Stop babbling,"

The older driver in the pilot seat, who had been silent until now, let out a cold snort and interrupted him. Holding the steering wheel, he glanced at the young soldier. "Finish your apple and get some sleep. If you start dozing off while driving later and stray off the convoy, don’t expect me to cover for you."

"Got it, Sergeant."

The young soldier took another bite of his apple and timidly shrank back into his seat.

Roger glanced at the driver with a slightly annoyed expression before turning his gaze back to the faintly glowing Nutrient Pod beside him.

——

North of the Northern Gate

Boom——

A shell trailing its exhaust slammed outside the trench, exploding violently and sending dirt flying in all directions.

A Dragon Cavalry Fighter soared above the wreckage of destroyed fighters and mangled corpses, firing lasers amid intense gunfire and shattering an electromagnetic cannon spitting shells atop the trench.

Yet, in the next instant, it was struck by another electromagnetic cannon nearby, bursting into fiery flames in the sky, slowly descending like a burning fireball.

At that moment, another fighter emerged from behind, destroying the electromagnetic cannon that had just fired, pressing forward.

On the ground beneath, armored land vehicles rapidly advanced toward the battlefield.

Soldiers crawled out from the flames within the wrecked fighter, clad in exoskeletal armor and armed with Gauss Rifles, rushing toward the front trenches.

A sudden rain of bullets erupted from the trenches – Wilderness Wanderers concealed behind the trench line unleashed machine guns and rifles at the advancing soldiers.

Some soldiers fell upon being hit, but others continued pressing forward, surpassing the fallen comrades.

Meanwhile, some Wilderness Wanderers in the trench also fell after being shot, collapsing backward.

One Wanderer was fortunate enough that the bullet didn’t claim his life, though it rendered him unable to fight. His nearby companion wasted no time grabbing his weapon and continued firing downward.

Bullets and artillery rained fiercely, crisscrossing the dark canvas of the night as radiant streaks of light.

The echoing thunder of battle reverberated across the earth and sky. Initially, people were stunned by the clamor akin to roaring thunder, yet gradually, this ’thunder’ became a mundane backdrop to their world, drawing no further amazement.

Flames and blood illuminated every face. In the haze, people could no longer tell friend from foe.

They simply took their stations, attacking toward their designated targets without pause.

Armored vehicles roared closer at a visibly rapid pace, as attacking soldiers tread upon fallen comrades, inching forward bit by bit.

The equipment and coordination of these advancing soldiers vastly outmatched those of the Wilderness Wanderers stationed in the trenches.

Like a competent regular army assaulting a loosely assembled group of rookies.

But these very rookies, standing steadfast in these trenches, held back the advancing army with nothing but sheer courage and determination.

Even so, the front line inexorably crept upward.

One line of trenches fell, its defenders withdrawing to the second, only for the attackers to progress toward the subsequent line soon thereafter.

Valiant warriors resisted with all their might, yet faced with utter disparity in strength and numbers, the scales of war tilted irrevocably in one direction.

Soon, of the expanse of trenches painstakingly dug out, only three lines remained.

All the Wilderness Wanderers converged before these last three trenches.

"Any word from the rear?"

A gaunt man drenched in blood gripped a small battery cannon, obliterating an advancing armored vehicle with a single blast. Amid the deafening roar, he shouted toward a stout man beside him.

"No word,"

The stout man hollered back. "Dammit, are those bastards in the canyon eating snails or what? Why are they so slow! Still not done after all this time?!"

As he spoke, the stout man glanced into the distance. In that direction, a string of aircraft exploded into fiery blasts in the air, prompting him to shout, "Holy hell, who did that? That was badass!"

"No idea,"

The gaunt man shouted back without turning his head. "Probably Suote."

"Wow, that’s seriously impressive..."

The stout man stole another glance at the distant scene. However, as he spoke, a Dragon Cavalry Fighter appeared before the two men.

"Watch out!"

The gaunt man immediately bellowed.

Boom——

A shell streaking across the sky obliterated the fighter before them.

The shell originated from the final tower on the defensive line.

But soon, a swarm of Dragon Cavalry Fighters braved immense firepower, escorting a massive combat aircraft inching closer to the tower.

Boom——

Amid the violent explosion, the cluster of Dragon Cavalry Fighters was torn apart by the tower’s firepower. Shells streaking overhead struck the rear combat aircraft, which erupted into engulfing flames.

Yet amid the raging flames, the missiles loaded onto the combat aircraft struck the tower.

In a blaring firestorm, the hastily erected towering structure crumbled abruptly.

"They’re breaching the tower already,"

The gaunt man dodged flaming debris descending from the sky, looked at the reassembling new fighter group ahead, and yelled, "This is the final line of defense!"

As he spoke, another Dragon Cavalry swarm escorted a different combat aircraft towards a nearby direction.

The tower in that direction was currently tackling combat aircraft from the opposite flank.

Seeing this, the gaunt man directly reached for the nearby mounted self-locking electromagnetic cannon, gripping the edge of its scorching barrel.

But at this moment, another hand extended, grasping the electromagnetic cannon along with him.

"Damn it, I owe you one. Let me handle this this time!"

The stout man glanced at him, bellowing loudly. Then he defiantly hoisted the cannon from the ground and leapt out of the trench.

Fixing his gaze on the advancing fighters, surrounded by a torrent of bullets and projectiles, he charged forward, cradling the electromagnetic cannon in his arms. "Screw your damn consortium—give back the lives of my family, my brothers!!!"

Bullets riddled his body, some grazing his skin, others deeply embedding within his flesh.

His movement was hindered by the kinetic energy of the bullets striking him, yet he still pressed forward at maximum speed, aiming the electromagnetic cannon at the massive fighter anchored at the rear of the formation.

"Die!!!"

He pulled the trigger, aiming toward the fighters in the sky.

Bam bam bam——

A rapid burst of cannon fire erupted from the Dragon Cavalry Fighters shielding the combat aircraft overhead, tearing through his body.

His body froze momentarily.

Soon after, even fiercer rounds continued firing downward, riddling his body with bullets and splattering a cascade of crimson.

His field of view blurred. He attempted to steady the electromagnetic cannon in his hands, but it became increasingly difficult to maintain its precision.

At that point, another hand stretched out, gripping the cannon and stabilizing it upward.

A gaunt figure stood before him, an enraged roar resounding across the battlefield:

"Give it back, you bastards!!!"

Boom——

The immense recoil from the cannon trembled the earth, the fired shell piercing the fighter, instantly shattering its fuselage.

Boom boom boom——

Successive explosions followed in rapid succession, colliding with the mammoth fighter above.

At last, raging flames spread across the fighter, enveloping its entire structure and dragging it downward.

In an instant, the gaunt man seemed drained of all strength, letting the electromagnetic cannon slip from his grasp as he collapsed forward.

The stout man turned to his side, seeing his companion whose body was long perforated with gunshot wounds.

At that moment, he opened his bloodstained mouth and chuckled hoarsely, "We went through all that for just one fighter. Doesn’t seem worth it."

He coughed up blood. "Unlucky..."

The gaunt man merely knelt silently, unable to respond.

Dragon Cavalry Fighters swarmed densely overhead, while layers of armored vehicles in the distance rotated their cannons.

The flames illuminating the sky were erased by the advancing machines, as row upon row of cannon barrels targeted the two blood-soaked men below.

Boom——

The first flames ignited atop one Dragon Cavalry Fighter in the sky, a tempest roaring downward as though some terrifying force roused the heavens themselves, plunging toward the earth.

The gaunt man raised his head skyward.

The anticipated barrage didn’t arrive—instead, brilliant fire erupted in the air.

The Dragon Cavalry Fighters appeared as though swept by some unseen force, detonating one after another in rapid flashes.

The interconnected flames formed an immense inferno, coiling through the distorted heavens and illuminating every blood-soaked face below.

A figure slowly emerged from their flank, wielding a ruby staff in hand, gazing skyward toward the fiery tempest.

Then he turned back, glancing at the two bloodied figures on the ground.

The gaunt man tried to open his mouth, attempting to speak, yet no sound emerged, while his stout companion had already succumbed to unconsciousness.

His vision dimmed, light footsteps echoing in his ears, seemingly signaling the approach of death.

Reinforcements had arrived, though they themselves would never return.

He Ao lowered his head, looking at the two figures before him. His gaze swept toward the trenches behind them, where the remnants continued their blood-soaked struggle.

Many were scarred beyond recognition, their wounds saturating the few intact patches of fabric left on their bodies.

He Ao shifted his gaze onto the card shimmering with white light in his field of view, along with the text inscribed upon it:

[Life Blessing]

[Eternal Source, solely for Your Mercy]

[Usable Time: 02:30:00]

[Would you like to expend one Exchange Star to activate the skill ’Life Blessing’ for 1.5 hours? (Your available Exchange Stars: 15)]

Feeling the stabilized power and connection within him, He Ao slowly lifted his hand, extending it toward the figures ahead and the rows of trenches.

Raging flames behind coalesced into a blazing inferno, countless bullets and artillery shells surged from the fire encompassing He Ao, piercing into the battlefield dense with smoke.

Pure white light gathered in his palm, forming a luminous fountain that flowed like a radiant spring.

With the radiance of the ’Radiant Spring Eye’ materializing instantly, a vast and majestic connection was established.

Far beyond the bounds of this world, a Great Being seemed to be stirred.

The pulsing light erupted from the fountain in He Ao’s hand, white radiance cascading like spring water and spreading across the skies.

The sky ablaze with warfare churned violently. The lights illuminating the heaven entwined with this radiance, convulsing wildly.

The shimmering radiance instantly converged behind He Ao, manifesting as an enormous luminous tree.

Branches extending outward grew rapidly from this tree, shedding countless pure white glimmers like falling leaves scattered across the heavens and earth.

Sensing the flickering light throughout the fragmented world, the gaunt man painstakingly stretched out his hand.

The white glimmers enveloped him, trickling onto his body like raindrops, permeating through his flesh and blood, seeping into his skeletal frame.

Shredded wounds began visibly writhing, ejecting embedded shells from the body. The torn blood and flesh entwined, coalescing, healing, and regenerating smooth skin anew.

Life force surged within once more, and his near-stilled heart began beating robustly.

His blurry vision gradually cleared. The gaunt man raised his head, gazing toward the figure standing beneath the luminous tree.

The radiant brilliance illuminated the side of that figure’s face, sketching the silhouette as though a sanctified spirit amidst blazing flames.

Simultaneously, scattered light points were swept along an invisible wind toward the skies, settling upon each battling Wilderness Wanderer, flowing into their bodies to mend wounds.

The mercenary corp soldiers charging forward froze, awestruck by the sky bathed in light, momentarily forgetting to attack.

Beep——

Startling and piercing alarms rang out from behind the trenches.

A short-haired girl standing behind the last line of defense squinted at the battlefield bathed in brilliance, observing the Wilderness Wanderers whose injuries visibly recovered. Once again, she pressed the nearby console.

Beep——

The shrill alarm repeated.

The alarm bore only one message:

Retreat!

At the pinnacle of the towering Northern Gate, the optical camouflage system reached its functional limits, exposing the sturdy fortress and walls completed behind it.
