Chapter 1193: Chapter 1193: Above the Sky (Large Chapter for Monthly Tickets)
Inside the mecha cockpit, He Ao gripped the control stick tightly and sharply pulled it back, causing the black-and-white mecha to ascend abruptly, surging toward the heavens.
The swarm of drones, like a stream of bees, raised their heads simultaneously and pursued the black-and-white mecha into the sky.
The other mercenary corps mechas in the rear were also ready to take to the skies in chase of the black-and-white mecha.
But before they could, they were intercepted by the silhouettes of white Seraphim mechas that suddenly appeared, ruthlessly pinning them in place.
The combat tactics of these Seraphim mechas were entirely unlike those of mecha units they had encountered before.
Rather than forming tight squads for mutual support like most military units, these mechas dispersed, striking individually with agile movements, harassing and engaging the mechas and aircraft in the sky.
When faced with mercenary corps mechas with superior numbers and firepower, they would alternate between closing in and retreating, persistently harassing and depleting the firepower of these mecha teams.
Conversely, if they encountered an isolated mecha, they wouldn’t hesitate to draw the massive sword on their back and destroy the mecha with a single stroke from behind.
When it was time to unleash firepower, they didn’t skimp, but whenever the battle didn’t require heavy weaponry, they relied on their swords to conserve ammunition and avoid unnecessary waste.
They roamed the skies tirelessly, using flames and other mechas, and even Demon Wolf’s escort drones, as cover for themselves.
At some point, the mercenary mecha pilots realized that these Seraphim mechas felt less like soldiers in a military formation and more like cunning Hunters prowling the wilds.
They were devious, hard to deal with, and extremely ruthless in their attacks.
The more chaotic the environment, the more at ease they seemed, thriving in disarray. They didn’t need teamwork; as individuals, they demonstrated immense combat capability.
This was a style of mecha warfare taught in no military academy. For a moment, the mercenary mechas and fighters in the sky, though far superior in number, found themselves dragged into a costly engagement by the Seraphim mechas, even suffering heavy losses.
As a result, high above, only the drones escorting Demon Wolf were left to pursue the black-and-white mecha.
The drones roared in unison, forming a black river in the sky as they surged toward the black-and-white mecha racing through the heavens.
The mecha didn’t fire back to deter the drones but instead flew a curve through the sky, sweeping over the top of Demon Wolf.
BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!
Fireballs erupted in the sky as Demon Wolf’s anti-aircraft cannons unleashed a storm of firepower.
The black-and-white mecha weaved through the incoming anti-aircraft fire with deft movements.
Although the anti-aircraft fire failed to hit the mecha and even shot down many drones on its tail, it still effectively reduced the black-and-white mecha’s speed.
The drones behind it were closing in rapidly. Just as it seemed the mecha was about to be overtaken, it abruptly dove downward, veering toward another group of ’sentinel’ drones farther out that weren’t actively pursuing it.
This sudden move caused the pursuing drones to hesitate for a moment, as if the maneuver had surpassed their algorithm’s predictions, but they quickly adjusted, sharply veering to continue the chase.
The anti-aircraft cannons below hadn’t accounted for the black-and-white mecha’s trajectory, and their slightly slower response caused some incoming fire to collide with the turning drones.
Amid explosions and fire, the tightly chasing drone swarm lost a bit of speed.
But the black-and-white mecha didn’t shake off its pursuers entirely. The direction it was heading led it straight into another group of sentinel drones ahead.
This new group rapidly reacted without hesitation, joining the chase after the black-and-white mecha.
The mecha immediately changed direction, heading elsewhere.
By this time, the drones slightly delayed by the anti-aircraft cannons caught up as well.
As the tense pursuit continued, the black-and-white mecha again collided with another group of sentinel drones.
This group, too, joined the chase without delay.
The original mass of chasing drones, initially formed of two groups, now ballooned into three. And with the latest addition, it swelled to four.
A dense horde of drones surged together, like a shifting black cloud enshrouding the sky, spreading toward the black-and-white mecha.
The rumble of anti-aircraft fire from Demon Wolf seemed to soften at this moment as the thick swarm of drones unleashed an even more brutal barrage of firepower.
With their increased numbers, these drones changed their single-minded pursuit tactics. Some focused on heavy fire support, others stayed in close pursuit, while yet another contingent moved to estimate routes ahead for interception.
Although the black-and-white mecha kept evading, its repeated movement in the airspace directly over Demon Wolf made its trajectory increasingly predictable.
Soon enough, the black-and-white mecha found itself encircled by the pursuing drones.
Facing the drones blocking its forward path and the ones closing in from behind on radar, the mecha abruptly redirected straight up, soaring toward the sky.
The surrounding drones chasing it collided into each other as they followed, yet they quickly realigned and fanned out, blossoming like a pitch-black lotus in the sky, enveloping the black-and-white mecha.
Streams of bullets and lasers wove radiant threads across the sky, pouring upward.
Yet the drones’ speed remained just slightly slower than the black-and-white mecha. Despite the artillery and lasers slowing the mecha somewhat, the swarm below still struggled to keep up.
Meanwhile, even fiercer firepower erupted higher above in the sky.
Further up lay the defensive net of cannons and missiles on the walled city, blocking the upper heavens.
In total, six drone formations accompanied Demon Wolf. Two hovered aloft near the defensive net, working with the mechanized units and fighters maintaining it to intercept shells and missiles from the city walls below.
The remaining four formations were all chasing the black-and-white mecha.
As He Ao’s black-and-white mecha neared the drone group comprising the defensive net, the pursuing drones below appeared to ’understand’ He Ao’s intent.
The drones accelerated suddenly, charging toward the mecha, and artillery fire flooded the heavens more densely than ever.
If the defensive net were to collapse, the missiles from the city wall would rain down upon Demon Wolf below, inflicting devastating damage to this massive machine of war.
But the pursuing drones were still a step too slow. In the blink of an eye, the black-and-white mecha reached the defensive drone group high in the sky.
The mecha raised its massive black-and-white sword slightly.
Intense fire clouds surged across the defensive net in the heavens, lighting up the elegant contours of the mecha’s frame in fiery brilliance.
For a fleeting moment, the mecha seemed poised to pierce through the defensive net covering the firmament.
Inside the cockpit, He Ao’s left hand softly pulled the control stick while his right reached toward his side.
At that moment, the two drone groups making up the defensive net abruptly wheeled around, forming a massive pitch-black hand, lunging down toward the black-and-white mecha.
Yet even after these drones were withdrawn, the defensive net above remained unbroken, still solid and intact.
These drones weren’t merely ’maintaining’ the net—the entire arrangement had been a ’trap,’ lying in wait for clueless intruders attempting to bypass the net from beneath.
Below, the colossal Demon Wolf lifted its ’head.’ At its center, the blood-red main cannon had gathered its searing radiance.
Engulfing flames draped over the sky as the pitch-black drone swarm descended heavily.
A dense webwork of firepower rained down torrentially, some blasts hitting the black-and-white mecha directly at such proximity.
The black-and-white mecha seemed to finally notice the peril, turning its body abruptly and attempting a downward escape.
But below, the pitch-black drone swarm spread open like a giant lotus, waiting in ambush all along.
The drones above and below sandwiched the black-and-white mecha, resembling an enormous black cauldron with its lid sealing the heavens.
Explosions erupted across the sky, and the illuminating brilliance overwhelmed even the fire clouds on the defensive net above, becoming like a colossal black ’sun’ shining over the firmament.
The Seraphim mechas detaining the mercenary mecha-fighter forces below lifted their gaze skyward, staring at the encased drone ’sphere’ slowly tightening above.
At such intensity of firepower, at such proximity, even a heavily modified and reinforced mecha was still just a mecha.
Everyone understood it would only take an instant for this mecha to be shredded into dust by the overwhelming firestorm.
Flames and lasers would consume all, silencing the world completely.
The roaring artillery persisted, yet the world seemed to fall silent at this moment. The Seraphim pilots felt as though they could hear their own frenzied heartbeat echoing in their chests.
The mercenary mecha pilots engaged in combat with the Seraphim also instinctively looked up at the radiant glow above their heads.
From the cockpit, He Ao watched through both his display screen and the transparent visor. His hand reached for the ruby staff at his waist.
Chaos Art.
BOOM—
A deafening explosion erupted in the skies as a surge of fire consumed the pitch-black steel, illuminating the entire firmament.
The flames reflected off the countless mechas below.
To everyone’s astonishment, it was not the encased mecha that ultimately ignited but the densely packed swarm of drones encasing it.
One by one, the drones caught fire, and searing flames spread across the heavens.
The black drone sphere truly became a ’sun,’ its smoldering brilliance rivaled only by the scattered explosions of shells within the defensive net, fogging the fiery clouds above in hues of red and gold.
A sharp blade tip pierced gently through this inferno, soon followed by a massive black-and-white greatsword. The elegant outline of the giant humanoid mecha emerged, slowly taking shape amidst the blaze.
The burning drone debris rained down like meteors, while the graceful black-and-white mecha surged forth from this blazing sun, cutting through the inferno and radiance like a true Seraphim of myth, descending with a mighty sword toward the monstrous machine below.
Scorching flames clung to its body like a fiery cape, carving a sweltering path of light through the sky.
The Chaos Magic Wand wasn’t only usable on Extraordinary powers; it could be applied to machinery as well. The cost for targeting machines was remarkably low; the only limitation was that the target had to be within 100 meters of the user’s field of view.
Thus, He Ao had intentionally drawn all the drones together, forcing them to compress and line up near him. A rapid series of maneuvers allowed him to detonate most of the drones simultaneously.
With the chain explosion triggered, the few remaining drones faced inevitable destruction in the ensuing blaze.
Of course, those on the ground knew nothing of these calculations.
All they could see was the black-and-white mecha annihilating every drone, passing through the flames like a Divine Descent, diving straight for Demon Wolf below.
At that moment, Demon Wolf’s central cannon unleashed a torrent of crimson light, piercing through the heavens and streaking directly toward the soaring black-and-white mecha.
Though less powerful than the radiant blast used in city-sieging earlier, it still carried an overwhelming aura of death.
Wherever it passed, the surrounding air seemed to warp from the intense heat.
It was so fast that before the onlookers below could even react, the crimson beam had already reached the black-and-white mecha.
Yet the black-and-white mecha had apparently anticipated this moment all along. Its frame shifted sideways from the beginning, tilting just enough as the beam erupted. The mecha angled itself during the split-second the radiance burst forth.
The horrifying beam grazed its chest, passing by and shooting into the blazing fire clouds above.
Even so, some of its devastating energy still grazed the sturdy chest armor of the mecha, causing its modified plating—capable of withstanding minor laser gunfire—to glow red, slightly deforming and showing signs of melting.
Cold winds through the gaps in the heavens brushed against the mecha’s chest, gradually cooling the searing material.
Bright red warning lights flashed across the displays inside the mecha. However, He Ao seemed unperturbed, ignoring them as he raised his hand and pulled the control stick.
The black-and-white mecha lifted its massive sword, its metal ’wings’ fully extending, creating a sound like rushing winds as the mecha dove toward Demon Wolf below.
The central cannon of Demon Wolf was still in its cooling period, further lengthened by its earlier forced energy buildup. It would remain inactive for a while.
Behind He Ao, the crimson beam from the cannon had already obliterated parts of the sky’s defensive mechanisms, tearing a hole through the defensive net above.
Dozens of missiles seized the opportunity to breach through the opening, following closely behind He Ao’s mecha toward the ground below.
The mecha’s roaring descent carried a violent wind, as the massive sword in its hand slashed through the air, swinging toward the protruding armor near Demon Wolf’s main cannon below.
BANG—
The metallic clash echoed across the blazing skies.
But it wasn’t the sound of the greatsword cleaving through armor.
He Ao raised his gaze, peering at the scene below through the mecha’s screen.
A tall, slender figure with chestnut hair, wearing an officer’s uniform, now stood atop Demon Wolf’s searing main cannon.
In his hands was a dark spear with a crimson, snake-like head. He raised it before him, blocking the massive black-and-white greatsword—despite the weapon being several times larger than himself.
B-level Extraordinary.
He, too, raised his head, locking eyes with He Ao inside the mecha cockpit.
Then, he abruptly lifted his spear and struck.
BANG—
Fine cracks spread across the sturdy greatsword from the impact, and the massive mecha was driven backward by the force transmitted through the spear.
The officer held his spear steady, lifting his gaze once more toward the missiles pouring through the gap in the defensive net above.
A multitude of cannon muzzles behind him tilted upward, and countless volleys of fire shot skyward, colliding with the descending missiles. The resulting fire clouds merged into a single inferno behind the giant mecha.
"Eve, cover me."
Still airborne within his descending mecha, He Ao released the control stick and reached behind him to grip the hilt of a blade. A blood-red edge slowly emerged from the sheath strapped to his back.
The tightly sealed cockpit doors abruptly opened, letting in alternating gusts of hot and cold air as countless alarms blared within the control room. He Ao’s figure appeared at the threshold and leaped out without hesitation.
The officer standing atop the cannon seemed to sense something, raising his head to look upward.
A few missiles bypassed the mecha and streaked toward Demon Wolf below, only to be intercepted by its anti-aircraft defenses. Billowing clouds of fiery explosions blanketed the massive war machine.
And at that very moment, the blood-red blade pierced through the fire clouds, descending like a meteor from the heavens.
