Chapter 1190: Chapter 1190: 1 Minute Left (2nd Update, Asking for Monthly Pass)
Yilan City · Northern Wilderness
White Blazing Angel Mechas howled as they shot through the snow-covered mountains and forests.
Behind them followed a densely packed convoy of snow-camouflaged armored vehicles bearing the White Jasmine Flower Emblem.
"General, the drone reconnaissance team reports that mercenary groups coming from the west have been spotted ahead. It’s estimated they’ll reach the northern grand valley of Yilan in five hours."
Inside the sealed command vehicle, the young communications officer looked up at the elder beside him.
"Relay orders to the entire force,"
Corvey raised his hand slightly. "Advance at full speed and prepare for combat. We must complete the fortifications before they reach the valley."
"Yes, sir!"
The officer replied promptly, then began operating the equipment to send out the orders swiftly.
——
Minte City · West City Gate
A massive land fortress remained immobile in front of the stationary city gates.
The inner city gate opened slowly but only wide enough for one person. Through the narrow crack, nothing could be seen but darkness within the archway behind it.
The bespectacled man furrowed his brow slightly.
Beside him, an officer turned and whispered, "Captain, there’s been no communication from the city wall."
The man with glasses glanced back at the outer city gate behind him. It stood open but showed no signs of further movement, neither opening wider nor closing inward.
The packed armored and mecha units continued to pass through the wide-open gate at a slow pace.
Snowflakes drifted down sparsely from the sky, and the entirety of Jar City remained eerily silent, save for the fixed machine cannons mounted on the walls, silently watching the people entering the city.
They resembled pairs of cold, ghostly eyes.
"Captain?"
The officer turned his head once more and looked at the man, his doubt evident.
"It’s fine,"
The bespectacled man withdrew his gaze and fixed it on the one-person-wide opening and the menacing pitch-black archway behind it.
He raised a hand to press against the frame of his glasses, removing the pair perched on his face, and slowly applied force.
Bang—
The glasses fractured and shattered instantly.
Snowflakes fluttered past the cold, sharp contours of his face. He casually tossed the crushed glasses behind him, his expression calm as he said, "Whatever trick they’re playing, before absolute strength, it’s all meaningless."
He raised his hand, "Summon the First Special Operations Squad."
The officer nodded slightly and promptly began entering instructions on his tablet.
Soon, a series of armored vehicles following the land fortress stopped before the spacious city gate.
Hatches atop the vehicles opened, and soldiers equipped with basic exoskeleton armor jumped out one after another.
Accompanying their movements were muffled thuds of ’bang, bang, bang—.’
They landed before the land fortress and the narrow inner city gate.
In an instant, they had formed up into neat ranks.
The man raised a foot, lightly leaped, and landed at the forefront of the assembled combat squad.
Then he raised his head, regarded the narrow opening, and walked straight through it.
The squad behind him followed closely, filing in one after another.
——
Minte City · North City Gate
Boom—
The heavy inner city gate slowly closed amidst deafening roars.
Numerous mechas and Dragon Cavalry Fighters stood silently in the spacious inner city.
At the forefront was a Blazing Angel Mecha, modified in black-and-white colors.
Behind this mecha lined up neatly were rows of mechas and Dragon Cavalry Fighters.
At this moment, all the mechas simultaneously lifted their heads, gazing ahead.
Boom—
A thunderous roar akin to a mountain collapsing pounded against the outer city gate, causing the towering, heavy gates to tremble violently.
The sealed doors jittered and cracked open slightly before slowly closing again.
The mechas and Dragon Cavalry Fighters stationed in Jar City stood silently behind the gate, their eyes locked on the sealed door.
They were waiting—waiting for the opportune moment.
Countless flickering images and intelligence transmitted through the network embedded in the city walls appeared on the displays inside the mechas.
He Ao viewed these vivid streams, his fingers moving rapidly over the control panel.
At his side rested a button directly connected to the central control system of the North City Gate. A single press would open the outer city gates.
"Eve, run a full diagnostic on all units."
He lowered his head and issued the command quickly.
"Connected to the shared network. Initiating diagnostics."
A little girl in a white dress appeared in his field of view.
Their makeshift ’combat team,’ composed of Wilderness Wanderers and the City Defense Army, amounted to roughly the size of a reinforced regiment from the Central Army or an augmented battalion of mercenaries.
Meanwhile, the West Iron and Steel Mercenary Corps outside had half their forces pulled to the west, leaving only about three reinforced battalions to the north.
It was a one-to-three matchup, facing an elite mercenary group’s main force, while He Ao’s forces largely consisted of untrained Wilderness Wanderers.
Many couldn’t operate Dragon Cavalry Fighters, let alone more complex mechas.
Without the Wilderness Wanderers, He Ao wouldn’t even have been able to muster this many troops.
Among these Wanderers, only one person had mastered complete mecha piloting skills—Xiya, who had attended lessons sponsored by Penny in Dawn City.
To his surprise, another seemingly frail youth from the City Defense Army could also pilot a mecha, albeit unskillfully.
The youth claimed his former captain was an excellent mecha pilot, frequently taking him to the simulation chamber to practice, thus enabling him to learn the basics.
In reality, this was likely the youth’s first time piloting an actual mecha.
It was, fundamentally, a ragtag force cobbled together: untrained Wilderness Wanderers and minimally experienced City Defense Army soldiers.
Strictly speaking, He Ao’s current troops were a makeshift collection of misfits thrown together in a crisis.
Perhaps with three months of training, fueled by their rage and courage, they could evolve into a formidable fighting force.
But sadly, He Ao didn’t have three months—not even three hours.
Thus, he resorted to creative methods to mitigate his army’s shortcomings.
Every mech and Dragon Cavalry Fighter’s control system had already been replaced by Eve.
Despite their lack of military training, the Wanderers were seasoned survivors of the wilderness.
Xiya had selected these individuals, all outstanding Hunters with extensive experience in combating exotic beasts, surviving perilous environments, and possessing instinctive combat intuition.
He Ao allocated most of the mechas to these Wanderers.
Eve severed the hardwired connections to the mech control panels, switching them to ’training mode’—essentially turning them into ’mecha piloting games’ so the Wanderers could learn the controls.
Of course, He Ao didn’t expect them to master mecha piloting within this brief window.
In essence, Eve used these elaborate ’mecha combat simulations’ to familiarize the Wanderers with the joysticks.
Simultaneously, Eve adapted to their maneuvering ’instincts.’
Even if the Wanderers couldn’t operate the mechas properly, the mechas would learn to adapt to their combat style.
Through sophisticated algorithms, Eve adjusted to the Wanderers’ fighting habits, interpreting their minimal inputs on the joystick, and guessing their intentions.
The aim was to let these Hunters pilot the mechas as if they were extensions of their own bodies.
Only then could their combat potential be maximized.
The City Defense Army soldiers were assigned most of the Dragon Cavalry Fighters and fewer mechas.
With their military training, they could execute coordinated team tactics, achieving synergy.
Similarly, Eve adapted to their operational methods, enhancing their capacity to fully utilize their fighter’s capabilities.
He Ao dared to execute this plan solely because of Eve’s presence.
In truth, this form of operation wasn’t unprecedented in the Federation.
Full Body Prosthesis individuals rely on embedded auxiliary chips to manage their prosthetic’s functionality, requiring only mental commands.
Similar auxiliary chips within mechas simplify pilot operations, but the original firmware was bloated, unable to harness the hardware’s maximum computational capacity, nor self-upgrade algorithmically, resulting in subpar effectiveness.
By substituting the firmware with Eve’s algorithms, every mech and fighter had been optimized.
"Diagnostic complete—all systems functioning normally. Health levels at 100%."
Eve’s voice snapped He Ao back to reality.
He raised his head to look at the screen before him.
Scattered across the edges of the display were feeds showing the ’soldiers’ immersed in the ’game controls.’
They smiled brightly, evidently relishing their daring ’extreme maneuvers.’
As Eve’s training games progressed, their combat operations became increasingly smooth. The deeper they ventured into the simulations, the more adept they grew at handling the virtual machines.
Though partly due to familiarity with the controls, this effect was largely driven by Eve’s evolving understanding of their combat styles.
The ’gaming system’ was adapting to them.
He Ao’s gaze drifted to the corner of the screen, where the white-dressed little girl nodded off, her head drooping as if she were about to fall asleep on the spot.
Noticing his gaze, the girl suddenly straightened, blinking wide-eyed at him.
"How long until ’Demon Wolf’s’ cooldown expires?"
He Ao smiled and asked the girl.
She glanced at the enormous screen beside her, which displayed the exterior battlefield.
Watching as the three cannon barrels erupted one by one with bright crimson bursts, the girl scratched her head and replied confidently, "Two minutes left!"
She paused briefly, then added, "Now there’s one minute and fifty-eight seconds remaining!"
’Demon Wolf’ rotates between its three barrels, allowing rapid successive firing with shorter charge times than the Sky Behemoth.
However, the trade-off was that its main cannons were far weaker than those of the Sky Behemoth.
Also, the barrels couldn’t fire indefinitely. After multiple rounds, they overheated, reaching the material’s limit, forcing ’Demon Wolf’ to initiate cooling systems for approximately five minutes.
During this cooldown, mercenary ground forces would bombard the city gate to protect ’Demon Wolf.’
Their primary defense, of course, was countering missile strikes from the city walls.
"One minute remaining."
He Ao rested his palm atop the button beside the mecha’s control panel.
