Chapter 1171: Chapter 1171: ’Conspiracy’ (Vote for Monthly Ticket)
Southern District·Block 76
"So, you need us to help you take back control of the two major consortia?"
The man in the red robe, with a smile on his face, gazed at the elderly man in front of him and said with a laugh, "You are here all by yourself. Aren’t you afraid that we’ll kill you and go to the new owners of Minte City’s two main consortia to exchange for benefits?"
"You won’t,"
Weiken glanced at the figures surrounding the man in the red robe, and at the flame emblem offered behind him, and laughed, "First of all, that bunch of good-for-nothings are definitely infighting. Without Lambert and me, no one can suppress the two consortia. There is no new master of the two consortia. Aside from me, you couldn’t find a second person to make a deal with.
"Secondly, we are all smart people, and I believe you would prefer to cooperate with smart people. A teammate as dumb as a pig can be much more harmful than a formidable opponent, right?"
He paused, glanced at the slightly menacing figures behind the man in the red robe, and laughed, "I guess, you are currently preparing to do something, and you have no intention of working with the two consortia."
"Why do you think we would be logical,"
The man in the red robe spoke gently, smiling with a tone as if advising someone to be good, "We are the Church of Chaos. If we want to kill, we will just kill, without caring about these rules and pacts."
"Because my existence can bring you greater chaos,"
Weiken narrowed his eyes slightly, his expression unchanged, and laughed, "You are a church, and all chaos is to please the Divine Being, in order to receive the Divine Being’s Grace. The greater the chaos, the more benefits you can obtain. That’s what I can bring to you."
His gaze swept over the man in the red robe and the figures beside him, and he continued,
"Do you think that with your power, the chaos you can create would be great, or would the chaos that the two major consortia, which have been operating in Minte City for many years and still have their main Mercenary Corps outside, be greater?
"As long as you send me back to the two consortia, I can offer you enough chaos to please your god."
"So,"
The man in the red robe smiled, "Respected Mr. Weiken, what would you get out of this chaos?"
"Right now I can’t say what I will get,"
Weiken narrowed his eyes, "I just need not to lose, and to complete the mission given by the headquarters."
"The headquarters’ mission?"
The man in the red robe was slightly taken aback, as if he realized something, and gently raised his eyebrows, "Do you have a way to influence the mercenaries outside?"
"Having sat on the top floor of the Note Intelligent Building for so many years, I must have some influence over the city, don’t I?"
Weiken said with a laugh.
"Interesting, very interesting. Mr. Weiken truly deserves to be the uncrowned king who has influenced the entire Minte City for decades."
The man in the red robe gently clapped his hands.
With the sound of clapping, the figures behind him gradually stepped out, surrounding Weiken.
Then, he narrowed his eyes gazing at Weiken’s cheeks, and said with a laugh, "If we threaten your life, Mr. Weiken, will you reveal all your secrets? People as selfish as you are usually the most afraid of death. Just a little torture..."
He raised his gaze to meet Weiken’s and continued to smile gently,
"I believe you are well aware that we are the Church of Chaos, not the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Therefore, when we interrogate people, we don’t have to respect the rules and human rights. We can use anything that is useful, and we have plenty of interesting little gadgets that we could invite Mr. Weiken to try."
"There’s no need for those things,"
Weiken laughed, "I can tell you everything I know, and then you can just kill me. But I believe you can also understand that the same things have different effects in different people’s hands. I can make some people trust me, but you may not be able to."
"Hahaha, Mr. Weiken certainly has some tricks up his sleeve."
The man in the red robe gently clapped his hands.
Those surrounding Weiken gradually retreated and dispersed.
"So what exactly does Mr. Weiken want us to do?"
The man in the red robe continued to smile.
"I’ve heard that your church has Transcendents of Class B?"
Weiken looked at the man in the red robe and asked with a smile, "Have they also entered the city with you?"
"You must have heard wrong. We don’t have any Class B Transcendents,"
The man in the red robe chuckled, "And even if we did, the senior members of our church are all wanted criminals, usually not venturing into the city. Now with the city gates tightly closed, and mercenaries outside, it’s even less likely for them to come in."
"Then we might still need to consider the problem of manpower."
Weiken drew the topic back, as if he had only asked out of curiosity.
"Does Mr. Weiken want us to escort you back to the Note Intelligent Building?"
The man in the red robe asked in a low voice.
"The Note Intelligent Building, what’s there?"
Weiken smiled, "It’s just a building. Going back would just give me a building; being the head of the building won’t change the situation. And Suote is not a fool. The buildings of the two consortia are definitely under his control now, waiting for me to return."
"Then where do you want us to take you?"
The man in the red robe was slightly surprised.
"To a place where I can truly gain some assistance."
Weiken said with a smile.
······
Borek leaned against the edge of a shabby slum, watching Weiken exiting the church, and snickered, "It seems you have completed the conspiracy."
"It was just a discussion on how to get this city back on track, that’s all."
Weiken said with a smile.
"You discuss how to ’get the city back on track’ with a bunch of Chaotic believers?"
Borek raised his eyebrows slightly and sneered, "It seems you’ve managed to convince these lunatics to help you."
"I disagree with your view. There are no lunatics in this world,"
Weiken shook his head, "As long as someone is human, they have desires, can be corrupted, controlled, and become our allies. The Church of Chaos is just an organization made up of people, after all."
"What about Suote?"
Borek asked with a hint of curiosity.
"Suote,"
Weiken paused for a moment, his smile fading, "He truly is a madman."
"Quite a number of people have come here,"
Borek didn’t continue on this topic, but instead glanced at the partially closed church door, "Do these followers know that they worship the God of Chaos?"
"Know? Perhaps they don’t?"
Weiken looked at the dwindling crowd outside under the fading light,
"But does it matter? Living here, with no jobs, no hope, no future, surrounded by drug abusers, prostitutes, thieves, robbers, what else can they believe in besides religion? Believe that the City Government will rebuild their houses, give them jobs, and let them live a good life?"
He turned back around, looking at Borek, took a cigarette from the cigarette case in Borek’s hand, put it in his mouth,
"They don’t care about Divine Beings, and Divine Beings don’t care about them. They just want someone, or something, to tell them, ’You are still alive, Divine Beings care about you, Cult Members care about you.’
"Priests and Priests listen to their confessions like parents, ’God is your Lord, your Father,’ making them feel as if they’ve returned to a family, as if they’re protected.
"They may not even realize that they’re just clinging to the Church’s illusory warmth that feels like family, thinking they have been saved by a Divine Being, that they have a devout faith, that after death they will be protected by the Divine Being, even fancying themselves as special, as if they have already left the quagmire behind.
"As for who they’re worshiping, does it matter? As long as the process is complete, any Divine Being placed inside will be devoutly praised."
"It seems you do care about the residents here as well."
Borek passed the electronic lighter to Weiken, letting him light his cigarette.
"Of course,"
Weiken took a drag on his cigarette and said with a laugh, "I have so many businesses here. Although these people don’t have much money, they still have to contribute some income to me every year."
He looked back at the church behind him, took a puff of his cigarette, and said with a laugh, "Once I’m done with my tasks, I’ll kill all these Chaotic believers, and then I’ll set up a church here too, just put any Divine Being in it.
"The Church provides emotional value, ’donations’ seem quite appropriate, right?"
Hum—
The thrumming blade, carrying a cold Sword Light, sliced through the ignited cigarette in midair, cutting the burning cigarette in two.
Borek performed a flourish with his knife and sheathed his fine steel dagger back at his waist. He looked at Weiken, who was left with only a neatly cut cigarette filter in his mouth, and smiled, "This cigarette will also cost you."
The half-extinguished cigarette, still having some sparks, fell into the pond, with half of its body submerged in water, extinguishing the flame.
"Clearly, you do want to kill me."
Weiken removed the cigarette butt, smiling as he spoke.
"Aren’t you also publicly discussing how to wipe out the very Church at its doorstep?"
Borek said casually.
"They are probably inside discussing how to finish me off after the fact. They must have Hidden strength; I always feel that the Church of Chaos has probably stuffed some terrifying individuals into the city over the years,"
Weiken looked at Borek, "And me, though I am the rotten beast you speak of, dirty Order is still order. These Chaotic believers would prefer to watch a bunch of wastrels fight to the death for the supreme power of the two big financial groups, unrest reigning supreme,
"While I was inside just now, they must have truly considered killing me."
"Aren’t you afraid?"
Borek pulled out the Gauss Pistol that he had reholstered and asked casually.
"Of course I’m afraid,"
Weiken laughed, "But if I don’t do this, how can I make them think I’m reliable? It’s normal to take some risks in business. When you point a gun at me, I’m afraid, but to reclaim my own fortune and power, I must do something, right?"
He raised his hand, "Let’s go, we have another place to visit."
"Why don’t you go with your newly formed ’allies’?"
Borek raised an eyebrow.
"They still have some things to prepare, they will join later. I couldn’t possibly really stick with those Chaotic believers, could I? What if one of them really goes nuts and shoots me? Do not place your Life in the hands of unpredictable and despicable people, there are too many accidents in this world."
Weiken turned to look at the slowly setting sun in the sky and headed in the direction of arrival, "Let’s go, it’s getting dark, and we have a lot to do, Suote won’t give us much time."
"Your allies would be delighted to tear you to pieces when they hear your opinion of them."
Borek glanced at Weiken and said offhandedly.
He held the gun and also slowly moved forward, leaving the place.
Not long after the two left, under the dim twilight, a thin figure in a large coat approached the pond, picked up the half-burnt cigarette from the ground that had been extinguished in the water.
He examined the cigarette carefully, glanced around, and saw that others were already approaching the location of the cigarette. He carefully pocketed the cigarette butt and, taking advantage of the others’ delayed reaction, quickly sprinted into the depths of the street and into the dimming twilight.
