Chapter 1162: Chapter 1162: Call from Someone from the Past (Double Update for Monthly Votes)

Federal Bureau of Investigation Building·Underground Parking Lot

Listening to the gunfire sporadically echoing through the air, Weiken waved his hand in front of his face, trying to dispel the dust and mustiness that assailed him at the elevator entrance.

He glanced at the somewhat dark and empty underground parking lot, his gaze settling on the red-haired man ahead holding a flashlight, "Why didn’t you just take me directly to the first floor? Aren’t those security forces on the first floor right now?"

"If you think, your idiot security forces can beat the City Defense Army and the building’s security systems, I can also take you to the first floor,"

The red-haired man laughed, shrugging his shoulders,

"But you’ll have to give me the account number and password for one of your anonymous accounts, with at least tens of millions of federal coins in it. Don’t tell me you don’t have one. I’ve made all this effort, I should earn something after all. I can’t ask for money from dead people."

Upon hearing this, Weiken fell silent for a moment, then lifted his head to look around the dark surroundings and said in a low voice, "I will give you the money you want, but I want to know, why did you bring me here?"

"I have my reasons for bringing you here,"

The red-haired man shook his head, pulling a folded gas mask from his chest.

"Mr. Suote bypassed our surveillance and appeared right outside my building,"

Weiken looked at the red-haired man, "The Federal Bureau of Investigation Building has other exits?"

Without a word, the red-haired man unfolded the gas mask in his hand and handed it to Weiken, "Put it on."

Weiken looked down at the gas mask in his hand, which was equipped with an electronic locking mechanism, and had its ear and eye areas sealed off.

Once worn, one presumably couldn’t see or hear anything, and the gas mask itself would also mask scents, leaving nothing to smell either.

"You want to cover up this route? Not let me see anything?"

Weiken looked at the red-haired man, "Since you’ve already betrayed Suote, why think about covering up his passage?"

"You’re wrong there,"

The red-haired man shrugged his shoulders, "I’m just making some easy money on the side. In the heat of conflict, isn’t it normal for the Federal Bureau of Investigation to lose a person or two? And besides, this isn’t Suote’s ’channel’. Some things, the fewer people know, the more valuable they are, right?"

Weiken glanced at him, saying with a meaningful smile, "In fierce struggles, people who try to play both sides, not wishing to offend either, often die the fastest."

The red-haired man raised an eyebrow, and after a brief pause, he said with a controlled laugh, "If you don’t want to wear the mask, I think there’s someone up there who’d be willing to wear it."

Lambert, the head of West Steel, was still held above.

"Hahaha, of course, of course I’ll wear it,"

Weiken touched the gas mask but did not immediately put it on. Instead, he laughed, looking at the red-haired man, "I’m quite curious, seeing as you chose to follow Suote under these circumstances, you must be a person of strong convictions. Why did you think to betray him?"

"I’m doing all this to make some small money, just trying to live, where does loyalty or betrayal come into it?"

The red-haired man shook his head, looking at Weiken. He took out a cigarette, put it in his mouth, lit it, and laughed as he smoked,

"Also, Mr. Weiken, after so many years as the CEO of the consortium, causing so many families to be ruined and lives lost, don’t you understand a simple truth? Fortune favors the bold."

His gaze landed on Weiken’s cheek, and he smiled, "If it wasn’t for following Suote, how would I have the chance to meet you here, to make this extra bit of money?"

"Interesting,"

Weiken slightly arched his eyebrows, laughing, "But it seems you have some misunderstandings about me and Note Intelligence."

"There’s no misunderstanding,"

The red-haired man, with a cigarette in his mouth, chuckled disdainfully,

"In Minte City, aside from some old fogeys in the city center, everyone wants you dead, wishing they could flay you alive, eat your flesh, drink your blood. Do you really think you’re some kind of beloved superstar?"

"I saved you purely out of consideration for federal coins. If you think I like you, at our advanced age, we really should stop indulging in such daydreams."

Weiken quietly listened to the words of the red-haired man. With a smile on his face and no signs of joy or anger, after a brief pause, Weiken laughed, "It seems I’m indeed not very popular."

"As long as federal coin is welcome, that’s enough,"

The red-haired man removed the cigarette from his mouth, looking at Weiken, "Are you going or not? The battle outside won’t last long, if you aren’t leaving, then let’s hurry so we can give the opportunity to someone else."

"Of course."

Weiken raised his hand and put on the gas mask.

He didn’t ask how to ’give the opportunity’ to someone else; after all, he had already talked so much with the red-haired man. To return to the cell ’intact’ seemed a bit difficult now.

And as he put on the gas mask, its elastic band automatically tightened behind his head. In his field of view, everything plunged into silent darkness.

Beside him, the red-haired man raised his hand, manipulating his bracelet.

A balance car robot with eight wheeled mechanical limbs, about twenty centimeters tall, carrying a dark ’platform’ on its back, much like a spider, drove out of the darkness.

No matter how the balance car went up or down hills, the platform it carried remained horizontal and stable.

"Lift your foot, and stand on it."

The red-haired man stopped the balance car in front of Weiken, instructing him quickly.

Weiken tentatively lifted his foot and stepped onto the platform.

Then, he felt his body turn in a direction, starting to move forward.

Behind them was just the open elevator.

Cunning fellows from the Federal Bureau of Investigation, indeed.

Obviously, the other party brought him to the underground parking lot to mislead him into thinking the escape route was there.

Next, he felt the elevator ascending rapidly.

Then they seemed to switch to another elevator and started descending.

After such a few switches, amidst silence, he finally felt his body being moved forward, supported by the ’object’ beneath his feet.

And now he felt somewhat dizzy from the maneuvers.

Maybe it was the distance or some other reason, but the sound of gunfire that permeated the air seemed to slowly cease.

——

City Defense Army Command Center·Communications Center

"Still no contact?"

The young man with gray hair looked towards Xiya, who was connecting a small black box to the communication system, and asked in a low voice.

"No response,"

Xiya shook her head.

"With such high-powered equipment from the City Defense Army,"

the young man with gray hair scratched his head, "even if they were dozens or hundreds of kilometers away, they should have received the message."

"The northwest of Minte City is all mountains, signals don’t travel that well, and it’s possible that they received the message but are now in the depths of the wilderness where the signal is affected and they’re unable to reply to us."

Xiya pondered.

"So what do we do?"

The young man with gray hair asked somewhat puzzledly.

"Try again later,"

Xiya sighed, "We previously agreed that every week on Heaven afternoon at three o’clock, they would try to place the transceiver in a location with good signal, to facilitate contact with us, and today is exactly Heaven day."

The communication center became a bit quieter.

——

Buzz——

Just as he entered the elevator to the command center, He Ao felt his wristband vibrate.

He glanced at the wristband and answered the call.

"Mr. Suote, as you said, the City Defense Army has sent troops to deal with the security forces of the two major consortia,"

Hel’s image appeared on the wristband’s projection, he looked at He Ao and spoke rapidly, "Some of the security forces managed to enter the building, attempting to breach it,"

Then he added somewhat strangely, "However, the building’s security system automatically activated and cleared out most of the enemies,"

"I set that up,"

He Ao casually said, "The building’s security system is always on alert."

The master artificial intelligence of the Federal Bureau of Investigation had long been taken over by Eve.

"Alright"

Hearing this, Hel nodded lightly, "The remaining security forces of the two consortia have all surrendered, and we are cleaning up the battlefield together with the City Defense Army."

Then he looked at He Ao, hesitated for a moment, and said slowly, "There’s one more thing, Weiken has disappeared."

"Hmm?"

He Ao raised an eyebrow.

"When the security forces of the two consortia broke in, we all went down to be on guard,"

Hel’s face looked a bit embarrassed, "By the time we returned, the door to Weiken’s confinement room was opened, and the camera inside was destroyed, nothing was recorded, you can only see that the door seems to have been opened from the outside."

"Is Lambert still there?"

He Ao asked casually.

"Lambert is still here."

Hel nodded quickly, and then his mouth opened slightly as if he were about to say something but stopped.

"Anyone else missing?"

He Ao asked in a moderated tone.

"Borek is gone,"

Hel was silent for a moment and said with some difficulty, "He went down with us, in charge of watching a separate area, and when we went back, we couldn’t find him."

He paused, then continued, "We sealed off the building immediately, but after searching the entire building, they were nowhere to be found; the elevator to the underground parking was not sealed..."

"Do you think Borek might have taken Weiken and escaped through the passage from the underground parking?"

He Ao asked offhandedly.

"You previously directed Borek to use the underground passage for entering and exiting,"

Hel was somewhat silent, "Only you and a few of us know about that passage, and everyone else is here now."

"Don’t jump to conclusions before everything is clear."

He Ao said calmly, "Let’s talk when I get back."

"Alright."

Hel nodded.

He Ao raised his hand and hung up the call.

He glanced at the elevator buttons, swiped his card, and pressed the button for the first floor.

Then he looked at his wristband and, after a brief silence, he opened the cloud contact list, selected a number, and dialed out.

Accompanied by the crisp busy tone and a short pause, the call was answered.

"This is the Limen City Federal Bureau of Investigation, may I ask who’s speaking?"

A calm middle-aged man’s voice came through the phone.

The other party had only connected to the audio call.

"Thorin, it’s me."

He Ao slowly spoke.

There was a pause on the other end of the phone, then that calm voice slightly raised in pitch, with a hint of discomposure, exclaimed, "Captain?"
