"Found it."
Just as He Ao was about to pull the book out, a light call came from behind him.
He turned around and saw that Vianne’s mechanical arm was supporting her, holding a black wooden box that was gently descending from the air.
The wooden box was covered with a thick layer of dust, indicating she had found it from a corner on top of a cabinet.
"This was given to me by Grandpa Eno. He said if one day you truly became a Transcendent, to give this back to you," Vianne said as she patted the dust off the box and slowly opened it.
A black pistol with specks of dark red patterns came into He Ao’s view.
"This gun is called the Butcher."
Vianne landed on the ground and slowly lifted the box in her hands, raising it to He Ao’s front.
She wasn’t very tall, only about one meter fifty, and with Roy’s height nearing one meter ninety, she had to lift the box up a bit to bring it in front of He Ao’s eyes.
"The Butcher?"
He Ao slowly picked up the gun.
The gun, to the naked eye, didn’t differ much from a regular pistol, and it felt similar. The only differences were the dense, blood-like dark red patterns covering the body of the gun and a gear-shaped knob on the upper part of the handle.
As He Ao picked up the gun, information began to flow into his mind.
Having experienced the Magician’s Top Hat, He Ao quickly sorted out the information.
The gun named the Butcher was a Transcendent object; it had only one ability, to twist the gear-shaped knob on the handle to switch between three modes.
Pistol mode, with an effective range of 150m, rifle mode, with an effective range of 800m, sniper rifle mode, with an effective range of 3500m.
He Ao tried twisting the knob, feeling a distinct mechanical resistance as it switched modes, and the knob was conveniently placed so that he could twist it with his thumb while holding the gun.
However, the ability seemed rather odd.
Though the gun could switch effective ranges, its structure remained that of a pistol, which typically doesn’t have a very high accuracy, relying entirely on the human eye to aim, and beyond three hundred meters, it becomes difficult for the naked eye to discern human details accurately. Even if it could shoot that far, aiming would be challenging.
Additionally, the short barrel of a pistol demands high accuracy and skill from the shooter. With this thug pistol’s barrel being around 20 centimeters, at a distance of 100 meters, even a 1-millimeter deviation from the barrel would translate to a 0.5-meter discrepancy, which is the width of a human’s body.
Thus, for most people, this gun is quite useless, and they might as well use it as a regular pistol. But for a select few, it is a divine weapon, such as for those with high-end artificial eyes or Mechanically Modified Persons, or else,
A Transcendent with a Talent Sequence like the ’Onlooker’ that perceives every detail.
This gun quite obviously was extremely suitable for someone with the ’Onlooker’ ability.
However, like the Magician’s Top Hat, this gun also had usage constraints.
The user of this gun must kill a person within every seven shots. If they couldn’t, the gun would enter a one-week cooldown. If, after the cooldown period, the user still couldn’t kill someone within seven shots, then they would no longer be able to use the gun unless they filled the gun barrel with their own blood, then they would get the chance to shoot seven more times.
Quite fitting with its name, ’The Butcher.’
"Is this my father’s gun?"
He Ao looked at the pistol in his hands and asked softly, sensing that he was beginning to grasp some information about Roy’s father.
"Mhm."
Vianne nodded lightly.
"Were those two bottles of Secret Medicine concocted using the Talent Sequences my father left behind after his death?"
He Ao pressed on with his questioning.
"Yes,"
Vianne nodded again, pausing before adding, "Before Grandpa Eno passed away, he told me to keep his Talent Sequences and reconstitute them into Secret Medicine to bequeath to you as an inheritance."
"Did you write those instructions?" He Ao placed the Butcher Pistol back into the wooden box and then set the box on a shelf to the side, "Can you tell me about my father? It’s been many many years since I last saw him, and it seems he kept a lot from me."
"I don’t know much..."
Vianne pulled out two folding chairs from a pile of mechanical parts, unfolded them, and placed them behind herself and He Ao.
Vianne’s knowledge was indeed limited; her encounter with Eno, who was Roy’s father, originated from a security hire.
Nearly five years ago, Vianne’s grandfather—a senior professor at Kaya Medical University—had hired Eno as a bodyguard through some connections.
Vianne was unaware of Eno’s past, and Eno never mentioned it. By that time, Eno had been nearing sixty years old, and most of the time, Vianne just thought of him as a kind grandfather.
Eno would sometimes talk to Vianne about family, mentioning that if his son were married with children, his granddaughter might be about Vianne’s age.
Disaster struck two months after Eno was hired, when people from the Witch Church attacked the small Research Institute where Vianne and her grandfather lived. At that time, Eno demonstrated a level of professional skill that astounded Vianne.
But even with Eno’s strength, it was difficult to resist the numerous members of the Witch Church who were blessed by the Evil God.
In the end, Vianne’s grandfather had Eno take his granddaughter and leave, while he himself was killed by the Witch Church, and the entire Research Institute was burned to the ground.
During the process of protecting Vianne, Eno also sustained serious injuries. Eventually, he used special channels to bring Vianne back to Dawn City from Kaye City. He had been planning to find Roy, but his aging body, compounded by the injuries, did not hold out that long.
He just managed to contact the lawyer he had hired to handle his estate, and entrusted Vianne with reconfiguring his remaining Talent Sequences into Secret Medicine, before he passed away.
Vianne and the lawyer buried Eno.
Before he died, Eno had intended for Vianne to follow Roy, and in his will, he asked Roy to take care of her, but Vianne refused.
Afterward, Vianne, equipped with items taken from the Research Institute and part of the inheritance Eno left her, established a secret base in Dawn City. She devoted herself to research while investigating the Witch Church, seeking revenge for Eno and her grandfather.
"So you’ve been here investigating the Witch Church all these years?"
He Ao asked softly.
"Not exactly," Vianne shrank back a bit, "Did you see the recent news about the Mayor keeping exotic beasts? When I was working at a research institute and mooching experimental materials, the Crocodile Gang captured me to study an exotic beast for over a year, and I was only recently rescued by a handsome old man."
"A handsome old man? Was he really handsome?"
He Ao asked emotionlessly.
After pondering for a moment, Vianne nodded, "Very handsome!"
Then her mood sombered a bit, "But he passed away. Later, I saw on the TV news that the old man died due to severe injuries from fighting with the exotic beast. The Federation awarded him the Federal Red Star Medal and entered his name in the roll of honor for martyrs of the Federation."
He Ao fell silent for a moment, then changed the subject, "Have you discovered the reason why the Witch Church attacked your Research Institute in Kaye City back then?"
