Chapter 44: What the fuck did you just say?

Kieran hurried to follow after her as everyone else started to appear.

As they passed through the gate, Kieran turned around to take a look at his comrades and suddenly found that they were missing.

Before he could ask the question that was obviously on his mind, Lana suddenly spoke up.

"They’ll be taken in and placed under surveillance for the time being. At the end of the day, whether you have joined our family or not, they are not one of us and as such they cannot be allowed to roam like you might.

Kieran’s furrowed his brows slightly but said nothing, his thoughts known only to himself.

As they continued onward they eventually made their way to the front doors of the castle. Grand fifty foot ornate wooden doors with decorative metal studs and steel designs forged and put into the doors.

Kieran was awed as he saw them, having never seen such a sight in his old world.

As he stood there gawking, they suddenly began to open with a deep groan and a few guardswomen walked out carrying spears intimidatingly.

Just as they approached Lana and Kieran however, they suddenly paused. Whether it was due to the presence of a man, or due to Lana’s obvious standing with in the sect, or family as she called it, was unknown.

"The Evernight be with you." Lana spoke.

After saying these cryptic words, the two girls simply bowed before turning and allowing passage through the ornate doors.

As Kieran walked by he couldn’t help but notice the girls taking peeks at him despite the obvious seriosujess of their roles.

"Welcome to tha main hall." Lana began. "This is where you’ll join the family in our communal gatherings and where we meet with foreign dignitaries that we make relations with. To the left there is the dining wing, and to the right is the combat arena and tool creation wing. Come on, keep up."

As she yapped, Kieran was stopped by how immaculate everything was. It was exactly how he would imagine a fantasy castle in his old world. Lush carpets, gold rimmed oil paintings, there was even an instrument that greatly resembled a piano, though it was more like a sideways giant harp.

Moving along the interior of the castle, Kieran took so many twists and turns that he couldn’t possibly remember where the exit was.

After a good long while, Lana finally stopped after having climbed a long staircase with Kieran in tow.

As Kieran finally reached the top of the staircase, grumbling about the tedious climb, he noticed the stark change in atmosphere. The hallway suddenly became darker, the air heavier, and a strange tension seemed to fill the surroundings. He wondered why they had climbed all the way instead of just flying. He wasn’t winded or even tired thanks to his cultivation, but it didn’t make it any less annoying that he had to climb each and every step. It felt like he was climbing the ten thousand steps in an old video game called Cloudrim in his old world.

Kieran wanted to complain but taking a good look around, his complaints were replaced by curiosity then they were quickly overtaken by unease.

When they reached a set of large doors, Kieran felt a chill run down his spine. The doors were made of a dark, foreboding wood, their surface covered in intricate carvings that seemed to twist and writhe in the low light.

Arriving beside Lana, he frowned slightly looked around.

"Alright. We’re here. The matriarch is in the next room. You will need to behave yourself accordingly. We’ve already sent word about your arrival beforehand, but don’t be surprised if she doesn’t take to you instantly. You are, after all, the first male in our family so it’s impossible to truly know how she’ll react."

Kieran simply nodded and remained silent. This girl wasn’t sure how she’d react, but if things went wrong, he knew how he would fix it so he wasn’t exactly worried about what would happen if things went wrong.

As Kieran was thinking this, Lana suddenly knocked on the large door they were standing in front of, and without any delay, it began to slowly creak inward.

Imperial Capital City.

Imperial Throne Room.

The grand hall was adorned with shining jade floors, its opulent surface reflecting the soft glow from the high arched windows. Upon the pristine jade, there was a luxurious red carpet that led from the imposing double doors at the entrance all the way to the impressive golden throne at the back.

Seated regally on the throne was a stunning jade beauty, her flawless complexion accentuated by a graceful elegance. The woman, clearly the Empress, although beautiful, wore an annoyed frown on her face and was pinching her scrunched brows.

Without warning, the gentle atmosphere in the Imperial Throne Room shattered in an instant.

Lilian Darkmoon, known for her unhinged demeanor, exploded in a fit of outrage.

"WHAT THE FUCK DID YOU JUST SAY?!" she bellowed, her voice echoing off the walls. The Empress, sitting on the golden throne, raised an eyebrow at Lilian’s outburst, though she was mostly unfazed by the show of temper. There was even a glimmer of intrigue in her eyes as she watched the volatile woman rage from across the room.

"I said," the Empress replied calmly, with a hint of annoyance, "your son has been kidnapped."

Hearing the news she hoped she had misheard once again, Lilian’s eyes widened in disbelief and anger, while a dark red and black miasma began to flow off of her body as she stood still, shaking in rage.

"Kidnapped?! Who would dare kidnap my son?" Lilian’s voice trembled slightly, her fists clenching and unclenching as she tried to reign in her rage so she might think more clearly.

"Was it those fucking whores of the Divine Sword Sect? I fucking knew it. I fucking knew I saw something disgusting in that old granny’s eyes!"

Before she could get all worked up however, the Empress spoke up again.

"I’m still working on that," the Empress responded, her tone growing more stern. "But to answer your question, no. It had nothing to do with the Divine Sword Sect. And we will do everything in our power to find him and bring him back safely. I have already dispatched a team of experts to investigate this matter. They are trying to uncover the location of the enemy’s hideout, and I’m sure that they will find your son there."

Saying this, the Empress sighed. More than anyone, possibly even Lilian, she too was worried about Kieran’s location. He was Lilian’s one and only reverse scale, and she would turn the Empire upside down to find him.

Lilian paced back and forth in front of the throne, her movements erratic and frenzied, and as if confirming her very thoughts, she spoke up while giving the Empress a death glare.

"You better find him, or I’ll burn this entire empire to the ground if I have to," she spat out, her eyes wild and filled with a manic intensity.

The Empress sighed, knowing that Lilian’s threats were not without merit. She knew all too well the lengths this woman would go to protect this precious son of hers.
