Chapter 472: The Director’s Arrangement, Potante Byrne’s Role

Chapter 472: Chapter 472: The Director’s Arrangement, Potante Byrne’s Role

The Federation is a nation that venerates individual heroism; when wrestling with a certain red behemoth, the Federation people couldn’t understand why that country’s agents would rather suffer torture to death than betray.

Agents of the Federation, thinking that those people had been brainwashed, turned instead to study the esoteric sciences that could control human thoughts, selectively ignoring the importance of faith.

Due to a lack of faith and persistence and a greater focus on personal gain, the Federation has countless law enforcement personnel who defect or turn rogue each year; there are simply too many to investigate.

In a situation where the enemy is heartless and ruthless, and superiors can’t necessarily be relied upon; even if a superior is reliable, their superiors may not be, becoming an undercover agent with an uncertain future... Luo An initially trashed this option straight into the bin.

Placing the paper back on the desk, Director Nasim folded his hands and looked at Luo An with seriousness:

"The findings of Linden Osborne startled me as well."

Luo An’s expression remained unchanged upon hearing this; on that paper, Linden Osborne had suggested to Director Nasim the idea of a purge among the higher-ups in the FBI office building.

But Director Nasim had not followed through with the plan, and Luo An quickly realized why. Compared to Linden, Director Nasim had many more considerations.

The FBI Los Angeles Branch building appeared to be a fortified stronghold, but in reality, it was a sieve full of holes.

Aside from the highly confidential information, ordinary intelligence could not be kept secret at all. Once a large-scale purge was initiated, it would probably hit the Los Angeles news within hours, and the whole Federation would know by the next day.

Such a scandal coming to light would put the stability of Director Nasim’s position as branch chief into question.

Director Nasim then informed Luo An that searching for the mole had been entrusted to Linden to conduct in secret, after all, Linden had retired in name and could more easily conceal his true status.

But what no one expected was the assassin to be so brutal as to kill Linden and his wife in an explosion.

Luo An remained silent, his thoughts going elsewhere.

For example, Linden could affirm that Potante Byrne was not the mastermind behind this case, so Director Nasim couldn’t possibly be unaware of this.

Suspending Potante Byrne for investigation was likely a protective measure by Director Nasim.

It diverted other people’s attention from the connection between Potante Byrne and the death case of The Lindens and also prepared Potante Byrne to take over the leadership of the investigation into this case and the search for the mole in the future.

Sure enough, Director Nasim continued by folding the paper on the table and indicated that Luo An would lead the Special Investigation Team agents to thoroughly investigate this case. The duration wasn’t important; what mattered was not to draw undue attention and to ensure personal safety while clarifying the truth.

"...I understand, Director."

Luo An slightly grinned and nodded upon hearing this; he caught the meaning in Director Nasim’s words:

Keeping secrets and avoiding attention was a priority. There was no rush in the investigation; Luo An’s rank was still too low, and later Potante Byrne, a tall figure in management, would lead them to solve the case; the current primary mission of the Special Investigation Team was to ensure their own safety.

"Good."

Director Nasim nodded in satisfaction, praised Luo An for his performance recently, and then handed Luo An a file containing an opportunity to further study at "Quantico."

"There’s one more thing."

Just as Luo An was about to rise to leave, Director Nasim suddenly handed him a folder, indicating that Horst from the Monitoring Department had been temporarily transferred to the Special Investigation Team. (Chapter 310)

"...Alright."

Luo An raised an eyebrow; the mastermind behind this case was definitely not someone from the Special Investigation Team, and there was no need for Horst to monitor every move of the team, suggesting that this person was obviously sent to provide protection.

After all, if the mastermind dared to blow up Linden Osborne with a bomb, who knows if they would target someone within the Special Investigation Team; in the event of an emergency, Horst from the Monitoring Department would be able to quickly contact Director Nasim for help.

Exiting the director’s office, Luo An looked at the folder in his hands and heaved a sigh of relief.

As Director Nasim had arranged, Potante Byrne would be responsible for the subsequent investigation of the case, so Luo An was not in a hurry.

Since Luo An had already led the team to catch the assassin who killed Linden Osborne, they would definitely be credited for their work afterward.

Moreover, with the case’s background being complex and involving higher-ups higher than the team supervisor, it would naturally be better to wait for Potante Byrne to step in for the investigation later.

Whether it would be credit or blame in the future, according to the FBI’s habit of finding layers within layers, it would naturally become Potante Byrne’s matter.

Taking the elevator back to the Special Investigation Team, Luo An changed his clothes while calling Chenier:

"How’s the interrogation going?"

Because it was not known in advance what the situation was with Director Nasim, there was a possibility of the case being taken over, so Luo An had Chenier and Chenier secretly take the assassin Ernest to another hospital before returning to the FBI Los Angeles Branch building, to prevent other investigation teams from snatching the person.

Chenier also followed Luo An’s orders. After Ernest had finished his surgery in the hospital, she and Winslow immediately began the interrogation, not even allowing Ernest a chance to rest.

"Sorry, just a little bit more."

Chenier on the other end of the phone furrowed her brows. Ernest was unusually tough, refusing to cooperate no matter what they said.

"OK, I’ll be there soon."

Luo An frowned slightly, downed his coffee in one gulp, and not long after, Horst from the Monitoring Department arrived.

Luo An didn’t waste words with him and directly pulled him to the hospital.

"You are carrying out the interrogation of the perpetrator?"

Upon hearing what Chenier and Winslow were doing, the suit-clad, serious-faced Horst furrowed his brows and said solemnly:

"The Director’s orders were for this case to be handed over to team supervisor Potante for investigation afterwards."

"That’s right, indeed it is."

Luo An turned the steering wheel, guiding the SUV into another street, smiling as he replied:

"But even if team supervisor Potante begins the investigation, the first step would definitely still be to interrogate Ernest who we caught. This kind of work will surely still be done by our Special Investigation Team later, so what’s the problem with us interrogating him now?"

"..."

Horst, with a stern expression, was silent for a few seconds without speaking, because what Luo An said made a lot of sense, and he couldn’t think of a reason to refute.

Luo An glanced at Horst discreetly with a slight upturn of the mouth.

The SUV quickly arrived at the hospital where the murderer Ernest was located. After parking the car on the side of the road, Luo An gave Horst a thumbs up.

Horst was the first one who had ridden in a car driven by Luo An and remained expressionless throughout the journey.

Walking into the hospital and reaching Ernest’s ward, Chenier and Winslow were standing at the door waiting for Luo An.

"This is Horst from the Monitoring Department."

Luo An briefly introduced each individual’s identity to the others.

Horst still had the same expressionless and serious face, while Winslow and Chenier felt a sudden tremor in their hearts. The Monitoring Department didn’t signify anything positive in their minds, and they didn’t understand why the other party was there.

Due to the special circumstances of the case, Luo An didn’t explain in detail to Winslow and Chenier. First, he pulled out his phone to call Mona, asking her along with Michelle and Reesi to all hurry to the hospital, and then he directly pushed open the ward’s door and walked in.

"Good evening, Mr. Ernest, who was shot three times by my subordinates."

Luo An casually picked up a chair and sat next to the hospital bed, looking at Ernest who was tightly handcuffed to the bed, gave a slight smile, and asked:

"How are you feeling? Are you getting used to it here?"

"Fu-k You! Mohterfu-ker#%¥**..."

Seeing Luo An’s face, Ernest’s complexion on the hospital bed instantly flushed red, and the voice of the federal greeting resounded loudly in the room.

However, because several teeth had been knocked out by Luo An’s fist earlier, Ernest’s speech was now slightly leaking air, and combined with his heavy accent, Luo An didn’t catch a single word of those greetings.

Luo An didn’t care about the greetings, he gave a slight smile and took several photos of a man out of his pocket.

Seeing the pictures, Ernest abruptly stopped the insults, fell silent for a while, then stared fiercely at Luo An and asked in a deep voice:

"What are you trying to do?"
