Chapter 788: Chapter 33 Other People’s Stories
Jin seemed curious about Jeanne. He said to her, "Actually, many people have read some of the Martial Ancestor’s memories, but you are the first one I’ve seen who went insane and got hunted by the special forces of the Mobile Cavalry."
Jeanne sighed, clearly annoyed, "I really don’t understand why so many people want to read that kind of... that stuff."
[Hey, that’s not very nice to say.]
Asgard shook his head, "I don’t understand either. That stuff makes people go mad after reading it..."
[I always feel like you’re trying to cast me in the image of the ’indescribable,’ and it seems your teammates think the same. Damn Hartman, he’s been defaming me, hasn’t he.]
[I’m begging you to tone it down a bit at this time.]
Jin didn’t pursue the same path as Asgard in "specializing in processing external information with the brain," but his Inner Strength was higher than Asgard’s, and his ability to read emotions was just as sharp. He too keenly sensed the fleeting changes in Jeanne’s emotions. He immediately reviewed what he had just said, reflecting on whether he had said anything to offend this "Martial God reservist."
Then, he cautiously began, "Actually, everyone just wants to gain the power to resist, don’t they?"
"Power? What power is there to speak of in the memories of the Martial Ancestor that are uploaded online now?" countered Asgard, "Everyone knows that after ’The Only Defeat,’ the Kings divided up the hard drives that stored the Martial Arts Algorithms of the Martial Ancestor. These algorithms, along with the hardware, are the true power. Besides, the hard drives contain the Martial Ancestor’s memories of ’the incident.’ As for the memories of ’knowledge,’ they are presumed to be in his Biological Brain—the part Yawgmoth made public doesn’t include any technology or any knowledge dangerous to the protection of civilization."
[Heh, this setup... only found out about it today.]
Jeanne tapped her forehead, "Besides, that old man, the Martial Ancestor, his knowledge and technology are pretty much outdated, right? The free chips provided by the Scientific Knight Order are better than that stuff."
[Are you being polite?]
[Did I say anything untrue?]
Jeanne wasn’t wrong. When on Mars, Xiang Shan almost capsized in a side ditch several times because he was unfamiliar with the Martial Studies that emerged over the past one hundred eighty years.
Jin tapped the table, "If you insist on saying that, it’s not out of the question... but I also know another saying—since the Fourth Martial God, every generation of Martial Gods starts off weak. But they always manage to become stronger."
Asgard said, "It’s not like only Martial Gods can become stronger..."
"The key lies in ’becoming stronger,’" Jin said. "How many people actively utilize and seek knowledge after receiving free knowledge chips? The proportion is actually quite small. At least, the memories of the Martial Ancestor tell you why we need knowledge and what it’s good for—the old man was committed to that cause. That’s what I heard."
[Nice, this young man is polite. Not like some people who don’t respect their elders.]
[Every cell of yours is as old as I am. Oh, some are even younger. I should say, even the oldest cell in you now is not as old as I am.]
"It’s not that one must see the memories of the Martial Ancestor to rebel. My mother always said that anyone is qualified to revolt. Revolting is something everyone is entitled to do," Jin continued, "But after one kindles the thought of rebellion, they often don’t know what to do next. Although the public memories of the Martial Ancestor have been deliberately stripped of related content, they still retain the process of thinking. As long as one learns this process, people will always be able to find a means of rebellion suitable for their own environment. I think this is the significance of the Martial Ancestor’s memories today."
Jeanne’s inner Xiang Shan seemed deeply moved. Jeanne herself was stunned—why was the old man so pleased by some praise?
Asgard asked, "You often say ’my mother said’ or ’my mother often said’... who is your mother exactly?"
"It’s not convenient to mention her name," Jin smiled. "My grandfather’s generation couldn’t let go of the affairs of the Martial Gods, so when my mother was young, they thought about training her in the direction of becoming a Martial God. But eventually, they gave up. My mother is quite an excellent Hero. Decades ago, my grandmother was disabled in battle, the kind that even Restoring Enzymes couldn’t completely heal. She couldn’t appear on the frontlines anymore, so she passed on her Prosthetic Body with a Reactor to someone else and moved to the Neutral City-State..."
Asgard was taken aback, "You’re telling us this, is that okay?"
Jin was also taken aback, "Oh, right, I can’t believe I’m telling the story of my family to two Life-Chasing Cavalry..." He paused for a moment, then laughed, "How could that be? I’ve told many people in the chamber of commerce about this; the chamber of commerce knows too. But fate is really fickle, for the descendant of a Martial God sympathizer to be telling his family’s story to two Anti-Martial God Rangers."
[I’d never admit to being part of that kind of remnant. Damn crazy! To think of raising one’s daughter to be my spare body? This person must be seriously ill!]
Jeanne rubbed her forehead. Even though there was no tactile sensation, this innate gesture relieved a bit of pressure. She said, "Well... I have a question... As far as I know, the Martial Gods were all against the birth of Martial Gods... um, I don’t know the stance of the Twelfth Martial God who was revived not long ago, but the historical Martial Gods were mostly against it. Your grandparents’ generation..."
"I don’t really want to know what they went through," Jin shrugged. "Something that left them with lifelong regrets... they must have had some psychological issues at the time, right?"
As he said this, Jin looked directly at Jeanne.
Jeanne tapped her head.
The inner Xiang Shan said nothing.

When Faulkner V woke up, he found himself still suspended in midair, his External Armor covered by emergency Armor Pieces where it was damaged, but his Prosthetic Body remained broken.
"Member Faulkner V, have you come to?" the squad leader inquired.
Faulkner V nodded, "I’d like to understand the current situation. Why haven’t I been transferred to a new Prosthetic Body?"
The leader shook his head, "Both of our safe houses have been destroyed, and we’ve lost some spare Prosthetic Bodies. Your priority ranking for them is low. There are no more Prosthetic Bodies. This safe house might not be safe anymore. We need you to abandon your Prosthetic Body and spine, and then move only with your head. Do you accept this Command?"
"I accept," Faulkner V nodded and then asked, "But I’m puzzled. Why aren’t we fighting the force that destroyed our safe houses?"
The leader shook his head again, "Another power is hunting us. We have become the prey."
