Chapter 718: Chapter 362 Yawgmoth【Part Three】
At the end of the 20th century and the beginning of the 21st century, many children believed that on September 3, 2112, a cat-shaped robot would be produced by the Matsuzhi Factory in Tokyo, Japan. This blue robot named Doraemon was imprinted in the annals of cultural history along with popular culture.
However, on September 3, 2112, a group of children from the early 21st century only felt heartbroken.
Yawgmoth stepped back two steps and waved his hand. The ship was released from its restraints and set a humpback whale back into the ocean. The blood of that whale flowed with anesthetics and viruses. The intelligence of this creature had already heightened, yet it hazily knew not what happened, simply stirring its tail to flee into deeper waters.
What awaited it was a trial of life and death.
And there were still several ships doing the same thing around it. Some were specifically controlling the whales, others were installing mechanical devices on the nape of the whales, and still others were injecting drugs into those whales.
Tens of kilometers west of this small fleet, humans had cast a massive filtration net.
That net was enough to block the majority of plankton.
If it had been in the past, such a net would have been condemned as "ecological destruction". But now, during these hurried times, these makeshift quarantine systems barely maintained the last glories of the biosphere—although Yawgmoth highly doubted whether these things had any effect at all.
The recent years of history reassembled the worst kind of nightmare.
The initial cause of these events occurred in Central Asia and South Asia.
Yawgmoth’s research results presented a significant challenge to religions pursuing the "Other Side". For a while, the great capitalist Xiang Shan developed a hobby—inviting various religious leaders to passionate online broadcasts for debates.
Actually, Xiang Shan’s debating skills were not great, but the "arguments" he held in his hand were a dimensional attack on those religious figures. Various fun little common knowledges from the academic community could make those holy parables taste quite off. The actions of Superman Enterprise also supported all of Xiang Shan’s views.
Xiang Shan did not need to convince these religious leaders logically or morally.
His aim was to convince the audience.
Traditional religions crumbled unimaginably fast.
"Advanced technology brought newer modes of production. Advanced lifestyles naturally leave the ideologies of the primitive age with nowhere to stand," Xiang Shan was very pleased with this.
However, in the midst of this trend, a cult that worshipped "science and technology" was born. For them, Xiang Shan was a prophet, a sage, a great revealer. They easily believed the news about "Stealing the Country" that Xiang Shan shared with the world.
The "holy war" they then waged against the "Evil Ghosts" caught everyone by surprise.
Xiang Shan completely destroyed the power of the Usurpers of the State across the Eurasian Continent. The former structures of Superman Enterprise were flattened. But the rebuilding of the government was not something that could be accomplished overnight.
In this power vacuum, in unregulated corners, a group of devout religious followers kidnapped two biologists to complete their holy war.
Originally, the biologists who could be kidnapped by such low-tier characters were merely adequate. However, Yawgmoth’s work was too outstanding. In the process of human standardization, he had overcome too many challenges, leading to the development of somewhat mythological technologies by relatively mediocre but lucky individuals.
Thus, the "holy war" was launched.
They released a genetic weapon. Countless artificially modified standardization transformation viruses were released. These viruses could transfer back and forth among plankton, insects, and other higher organisms. Encapsulated in special yeast spores, they were deployed throughout the world through complex logistic systems.
The method Yawgmoth developed to minimize the cost of drugs, Yawill Pharmaceutical Method, had mastered the horizontal transfer of microbial genetic information. These yeasts, serving as "intermediate hosts" for the viruses, could also continuously transform natural microbes into their own kind.
The cultists had also domesticated numerous pathogens.
This was an unprecedented major infection.
Humans were the least impacted species group because they had essentially completed benchmarking. The viruses targeting Earth’s native animals could no longer infect them.
However, regardless of the domain or realm, essentially all native Earth life forms could not escape this infection. It was just a matter of sooner or later.
Because... life had only occurred once on Earth.
What awaited Earth’s life forms was a life-or-death test where only one in a hundred would survive.
Initially, the team at Superman Enterprise had spent countless resources to develop a generally safe surgical plan targeted at a single species. And now, what reverse transcriptase virus would infect Earth’s life forms depended entirely on luck, and which ones they would contract also depended completely on luck.
"One in a hundred" was an overly optimistic statement.
Moreover, even if these life forms survived the viral modification, they generally couldn’t continue to live.
Because there was no natural environment on Earth for metal-based life forms.
The Earth’s average temperature simply couldn’t reach the operating temperature of the enzyme systems of metal-based life forms.
Plants, ectothermic animals were already doomed to extinction—unless some ectothermic animals were lucky enough to mutate into endothermic animals during genetic modification and survived.
And endothermic animals weren’t much better off, essentially, they could only move around the equator.
Now, Yawgmoth was making his final attempt. A group of individuals was frantically capturing animals, collecting genetic samples, and recording data. At the same time, they were selecting some "life forms with a hope of surviving" in the hopes of preserving a bit of the biosphere at the equator.
Some heroes who had gained weapons also hoped to use methods like incendiary bombs to establish quarantines.
But in the end, it was all just a drop in the bucket.
The next day, the fleet where Yawgmoth was located hauled up the corpses of two baby blue whales.
According to the numbers on the devices on the bodies of these two juveniles, these juveniles had undergone surgery half a month ago by them.
The procedure was already very certain. Everyone numbly recovered the equipment while also dissecting to examine the causes of death. This equipment connected to the whales’ blood vessels supplying the brain. It would extract the whales’ blood and then inject it into a copper pipe exposed to seawater; after cooling, it would be returned. This could roughly protect the whales’ nervous system. Even if the pipeline burst, a certain mixed component in the metal layer would quickly activate clotting factors. Although this machine was cheap, the rescue team possessed very limited resources.
The early space battles had begun not long ago.
The whales had to make way for the fleet. Even Yawgmoth would not question this.
Everyone worked numbly. Occasionally, someone’s emotions would collapse, and they would fall to the ground. Now everyone lacked tear glands—options for expressing emotions were limited, making mental breakdowns exceedingly common.
Yawgmoth looked at the bodies of the two juvenile whales and chuckled softly, "Caring too much about that little fish would surely end up losing the entire ocean."
