Chapter 757: Chapter 354: Corpse Theft (Part 2)

The person currently leading the army is an Oran noble I’ve hardly heard of, who doesn’t accommodate us at all. Even when I suggested to the garrison that we could use our knowledge of vampires to assist in investigating the assassin, the application to enter the city has received no response whatsoever.”

Upon hearing this, Leon grew even more suspicious.

That Great Knight Kellan is called “Deer Horn” because he is not only the most powerful Knight of Valor in the Deer Family but also a close guard of the Earl of Buck. Throughout these years, except during times of war, when has he ever been known to be separated from Trosa?

Especially considering Trosa being sent to oversee such a sensitive area as the Southern Royal Court, how could Baron Kellan not be accompanying him? And the assassination conveniently occurred while the Great Knight was not with him?

“Can we contact someone from the Deer Family?” asked Leon.

David shrugged and spread his hands helplessly. They were not being allowed through, and they even didn’t know whether the words he previously entrusted to the garrison had reached the ears of the commander who replaced General Trosa.

Leon pondered, sat back on the wooden stool, and touched his waist pouch, thinking deeply.

As a legitimate Mage, he doesn’t need to play detective games for investigations. Like how he dealt with Canis before, the most direct way to solve the case is to “pull out” General Trosa from the graveyard and personally ask the deceased whom he was killed by.

Was it the vampire undead planning to come back for revenge? Or the unwilling Kantadar Royal Court? Or perhaps a conspiracy by the Athiasian?

There were still three vacant Netti Cards in his pocket, and given General Trosa’s famous title as Kingmaker, the summoning might be far simpler than reviving Canis. Being murdered, Trosa would likely not refuse a Spirit Communication.

The problem is, he couldn’t expose his miraculous resurrection ability and draw greedy attention; this had to be done secretly…

Fortunately, with Stormhawk and Griffin at his side, soldiers on the ground and city walls couldn’t stop him from sneaking into the city at night.

“Since Avim City can’t be accessed, there’s no need for us to get involved.” Leon didn’t reveal his plan to David.

He used the same words he bluffed Lady Adelina with earlier, telling the other that he had confirmed through some divination magic that Count Eriv was indeed still alive.

Upon hearing Leon affirm the news that his father wasn’t dead, a thrilled David stood up, nearly overturning the wooden stool behind him.

Leon raised his hand to calm him down: “We’ll take a short rest here until my Knight Order successfully enters the Ustato Territory and rendezvous with us, then we’ll head south together to search for Lord Eriv’s whereabouts.”

David nodded vigorously, chest-thumping and bowing deeply to Leon in gratitude.

After discussing a bit about David’s achievements during this period, Leon exited the main tent, releasing Death Claw and Xiao An to freely forage, while letting Griffin and Stormhawk return after nightfall.

He found a couple of tents on the outskirts of the old camp to rest, informing Olivia and Kovis about the plan to sneak into the Royal City and steal Trosa’s corpse.

This time he let Olivia stay behind and wait, otherwise the Disturbing Magic Field on his wife would render Kovis’s Invisibility Spell ineffective.

Nighttime came.

Leon, along with Kovis, stealthily sneaked out of the camp, mounted their long-waiting war beasts, and soared into the night sky, swiftly heading towards Avim City.

If this were the Kantadar Royal City a few years back, he would never dare to audaciously fly straight into Avim’s airspace.

But after going through the Eastern Invasion War, the Battle of Ustato, and the Undead War, Kantadar no longer had a full-scale Lion Scorpion Knight unit to patrol the skies of Avim City at night.

The airborne beast ascended into the chilly heights, and swiftly dove towards the military barracks near the Kantadar Royal Palace.

Still at a considerable height above the ground, Leon and Kovis directly freed themselves from the saddle’s waist restraints and leaped downward from the night skies.

Leon swung Garner, weaving a Demon Rune, as a pressure like a large net abruptly reduced their falling speed and force.

Penetrating through the cushion of air, Leon flipped mid-air and landed unscathed on the grass, hardly making a sound.

Ever since the Undead War ended, he could finally be like a real Pope, unlikely to die from a free-fall.

Kovis landed behind Leon using the same spell technique, he stood up, drew the Friendship Longsword, and traced a Dharma Seal over the glowing rune blade. In the next instant, two shadowy cloaks enveloped them, concealing their refracted light and shadow.

After hiding their forms, using hearing and Magic Perception to determine each other’s position, Leon signaled him to proceed.

He speculated that Count Trosa’s corpse should be stored in the Deer Family’s barracks, but Leon thought the body’s location shouldn’t be a secret; maybe scaring Kingmaker’s former servants could yield answers.

Thanks to the Athiasian collusion with the Warlock Society causing chaos, infiltrating a barracks now without stationed magician advisers was a breeze.

Merely needing to slightly avoid Knights of Valor with keen instincts and perceptions, Leon and Kovis moved like ghosts invisible to ordinary soldiers, slipping into the army’s premises.

Soon, using spell tricks to sneak and pick locks, they found a servant’s room.

Leon lightly tapped the blade of his magic wand, setting up a soundproof magic technique to block out sound waves.

Kovis stepped forward, pressed the rune long sword against the servant’s neck, while awakening him, whispering eerily into his ear like a ghost.

The servant, suddenly awakened from his sleep.

He blinked, bewilderedly looking around the empty room, an eerie interrogation sounded in his ears, instantly frightening him into screaming.

However, the room sealed with airflow didn’t let any trace of the scream escape.

The pain around his neck, together with the bizarre situation of his cries unable to summon patrolling soldiers, chilled the servant to the bone.

“…I am Vinoles’ envoy of the afterlife, here today to take one soul…. Tell me… where lies the body of the Deer….”

Listening to Kovis theatrically and quirkily using the Felu people’s traditional beliefs to scare people, Leon tried hard not to laugh.

But the servant caught in this nightmare couldn’t laugh.

Feeling the sensation of a scythe pressing against his neck like Death’s own, tears welled in his eyes, and he pleaded fearfully for mercy.

“It’s none of my business! O envoy, I am but a humble servant, I told them… doing so is against tradition, they’d surely be cursed!

Lord Trosa… his body has been burned into ashes by Earl Angor, claiming it was to prevent it from being defiled and cursed by vampire creatures turning undead… The ashes urn is placed in the casket at the Earl’s residence, O envoy, it is they who are guilty, don’t take me, my wife is yet to give birth…

Ignoring the other’s cries, Leon was stunned.

How unlucky is this? Trosa’s body simply got burned?

Kovis touched the servant’s forehead, channeling a weak Magic Shock to immediately knock him out.

He raised his hand to simply heal the shallow cut on his neck, making it hard for him to distinguish whether he had a nightmare or a real experience upon waking, and turned back to Leon.

“What now? My lord, shall we continue to steal the ashes?”

Listening to Acro’s low inquiry, Leon thought for a moment and said helplessly, “Let’s go take a look. The ashes are useless now, but maybe we can find some other relics from Trosa, like a sword. If we can’t find anything, then let’s withdraw.”

In the Magic Science of Ancient Lorelette, concerning the principles of the Summoning Spirit magic, ashes and corpses hold different significance.

A body purified by worldly fire is like having undergone a natural ritual, the symbolism of ashes in the world is now akin to ubiquitous dust in the mortal world, truly returning dust to dust, soil to soil, completely severed from any connection to the deceased’s existence.

This is also why, during the Undead War, he suggested cremation similar to the Holy Sun Church’s tradition to minimize corpses being utilized by Undead Magic.

But now, he had inadvertently set himself in a trap.
