Chapter 751: Chapter 351: The First Adventure Mission_2
Tekatu couldn’t help but feel greatly disappointed upon hearing those words.
The man with a saber raised his eyebrow at the visible frustration and disappointment on the boy’s face.
This little brat is really ungrateful.
Becoming a roving sheriff under Lord Larian is no easy feat. Besides, the duties within Baron’s territory, apart from not specifically dealing with wilderness monsters, and having the backing of the circuit court, aren’t much different from what a ranger does.
But not wanting to argue with this poor kid, the sheriff turned and took out another notice in Felu Language and continued to post it.
And Tekatu, who hardly got permission from his mother to come out and play, though he neither caught the minstrel’s story nor saw a real ranger knight, was reluctant to rush home at this moment. He couldn’t help but look curiously at the notice with the “gem” pattern in the other’s hand and ask.
“Sheriff, what are you doing? Is that a wanted notice for capturing a thief?”
Tekatu couldn’t recognize a single character, and the two notices with similar patterns were like a heavenly script to him.
The sheriff pasted the paper, clapped his hands, and turned to look at the child.
“This is a bounty issued by Avalon Castle… The Baron seems to call it an ‘adventure task’?
The Lord wants the rangers to know that he is looking for a treasure called the ‘Yisuya Soul Stone,’ said to be an ancient elf’s gem, just like the one depicted and described in the notice… Haha, what am I saying, of course, you can’t understand.”
He shrugged, not explaining that the notice said the thing might only be found as far away as in the Orelia Kingdom and overseas islands, just casually teasing the young man:
“Kid, if you ever see a gem like this by the roadside in the future, report it to the mayor. Even if it weighs only a tenth of an Olb, you can get a bounty of a thousand gold coins.”
“A… a thousand?!! A thousand? … How much is a thousand?” Tekatu felt dizzy, and his legs almost gave way upon hearing that.
Even a single gold coin was a tremendous fortune in the boy’s eyes, let alone such a terrifying number.
The sheriff was amused by his reaction.
Honestly, when he first heard about such a staggering bounty a few days ago, he too felt his heart race.
This amount is worth a thousand gold crowns of the Orland people for such a small quantity; if one were to find even an Olb weight, wouldn’t that be ten thousand gold coins?
Even if he worked from birth until he was an old man at one hundred, living frugally in the sheriff’s post for three lifetimes, he still couldn’t earn that much money.
Who knows what kind of treasure this so-called soul stone is, could it grant immortality?
“Alright, kid, it’s getting late; hurry back.” The sheriff walked out of the inn, led the horse to the stable, and waved that child home.
Tekatu slowly came back to his senses from the bounty’s number spoken by the other party and turned around unwillingly.
After taking only two steps, the boy turned back and shouted, “Sheriff, does that mean those ranger knights will come to the town to see the… ‘adventure task’ notice?”
The sheriff waved his hand backward without turning his head: “How would I know, there isn’t only this inn in your town in the world…”
He was just following instructions to post bounties in various inns in Glade County, but the ranger inns were not limited to the territories under the Pendragon Family’s influence; it was said that every noble land friendly with Baron Avalon had such places.
Who knows when some ranger will pass by and see one of the notices.
Seemingly feeling the boy’s obsession, the sheriff thought for a moment and then turned to comfort him, “If you really want to see a Ranger Knight, you might have a chance with luck in the coming days, and perhaps not just meet the legendary ranger, be patient at home.”
The sheriff heard that the Lord is about to lead the knight order south, and that Lord Larian would be accompanying him this time.
It was said that Lord Pendragon planned to continue the magical apprentice selection that was lively held in the Avalon Castle area during his proceeding with each territory town on the way south.
He didn’t mention the baron’s whereabouts, but if the knight order passed through this small town, the kid wouldn’t just see a ranger knight but even Griffin Knights, Golden Lion Knights, Red Knights… all could be seen.
Tekatu scratched his head, watching the sheriff’s figure disappear behind the house, and then finally returned home in a daze.
In the following days, the boy had trouble sleeping every night, always thinking of the sheriff’s words that day, dreaming strange dreams for several nights in a row but remembering nothing upon waking.
Just as Tekatu was about to forget this matter over the half-month, thinking the sheriff was just joking with him.
That morning, like usual, working hard on the farm with his old father, a slight tremor made him curiously raise his head to look at the road stretching over the distant hills.
At the end of his sight, the flags and the cavalry approaching after turning off the dirt road made the boy swallow in fear.
Tekatu vaguely remembered back when the former lord ruled this land, a fellow villager could not avoid some noble’s horse team and was whipped down by a rider.
Though this never happened again since the town came under the Pendragon Family’s rule, as the former lord’s entire family had been replaced by a locally elected mayor, he still remembered it vividly.
But soon, recognizing the flags flying in the wind, Tekatu’s mood was replaced by excitement.
The emblem frequently mentioned by minstrels, a sword and a pair of wings, was easy to recognize.
Rumored to be the sign of Baron Avalon or the Avalon Knights.
Avalon Knights!?
The boy excitedly threw down his farm tools and ran to the dyke on the roadside to have a look.
The Avalon Knights, known for their expeditions to the Demon Realm against demons, were as much a staple of stories as the ranger knights.
Watching the mighty knights in black and red war robes, one by one slowing down their pace as they tread over the rural roads into the town, Tekatu’s legs went weak with joy, until his father, also watching, hit him on the back of the head before reluctantly returning to the field to continue working.
After that, he asked several times to go into town for a look but was rudely refused by his father. He had to mindlessly stay in the field until close to noon, when his mother came with a basket of food, and Tekatu pleaded again.
Just when the old farmer frowned, about to reprimand, the family heard the urgent ringing of bells, signifying a summons from the distant town belfry.
Soon, several town officials rushed to the fields, shouting angrily at the still slow-moving farmers on the edge of the field, “Are you all deaf? Hurry up!! Forget about that darn field; the Lord wants to recruit some people, hurry and bring your ten to sixteen-year-old kids! The Baron is only seeing a hundred people before leaving; slow and you’ll miss the chance to prosper!”
