Chapter 590 - 590 278 The Returning Avenger

590: Chapter 278: The Returning Avenger 590: Chapter 278: The Returning Avenger In the room of the Kilmerton Fortress, the heavy atmosphere was suffocating.

The faint candlelight flickered uncertainly, distorting the shadows of those present into grotesque forms.

Count Eriv stood with a grave expression beside the bed, his eyes tightly locked on his gravely injured, unconscious old friend, filled with deep concern and care.

Baron Balfe, lying on the bed, was pale as paper, his eyes tightly shut, and his usually firm face was now mildly twisted with pain.

The massive wound on his chest was shocking, as if recounting the fierceness of battle; if it hadn’t been for the Guard Knight’s desperate rescue, the old knight would have perished on the battlefield.

Magician adviser Master Harvey and several military doctors gathered around the bed, their brows furrowed, focusing intently on examining Balfe’s injuries.

The young Warlock Master’s eyes revealed confusion, as he intermittently examined the wound and shook his head, sighing, seemingly finding the situation quite tricky.

After a long while, Harvey turned around, facing Eriv and Ines, his expression exceptionally solemn.

“Count, Princess, the severity of Baron Balfe’s injuries would have been fatal to ordinary people.

Considering his current condition, it’s a miracle he was brought back to the fortress alive.”

As he spoke, confusion crept onto Harvey’s face.

“Though not specialized in healing practices, I am somewhat knowledgeable in medicine.

However, I cannot utilize the Magic Technique to transmit the Magic Elements and activate Baron Balfe’s life force to promote his wound healing.

Whenever my power enters his body, it seems like it disappears without a trace, his body doesn’t respond even slightly with vitality…”

Upon hearing this, Ines softly sighed, interrupting Harvey just before he began a lengthy exposition: “Harvey, this isn’t your tower or a symposium at the Northern College, please get to the point.”

The young magician realized, quickly bowed, and succinctly summarized: “I’m sorry, Your Highness.

From Baron Balfe’s current condition, his heart still beats to supply blood, and his breathing, though weak, is relatively stable, posing no immediate life-threat.”

After my careful examination, no signs of voodoo or curses were found within his body.

Yet, the conditions here are indeed rudimentary, and I am not a Mage specialized in Life Science, making it difficult to heal Lord Balfe’s injuries.

I’ve heard that Sir Cowis from the Alliance is adept at Life Magic; perhaps he could save Lord Balfe.”

Hearing that his old friend was in no immediate danger, Count Eriv slightly relaxed his tense nerves and nodded calmly: “Every profession has its specialization; Balfe’s injuries are so severe that unforeseen incidents are understandable, but I still ask Master Harvey to take good care of my old friend.”

The Harvey magician bowed slightly: “I will do my utmost.”

Thereafter, Eriv and Ines left the room.

The dim candlelight in the corridor cast the Thorny Flower Earl’s face into an even darker shade.

He spoke to the princess beside him: “The southern defeat came too suddenly; the fortress gathered less than a thousand soldiers from the broken army.

Most of the southern troops of the Lord of Kantadar were likely annihilated; less than a quarter of Balfe’s two thousand men returned.”

…Over a thousand elite families were exterminated, undoubtedly a heavy blow to the Thorns Flower family.

Ines appeared worried: “Did those who fled back make clear why the south suffered such a devastating defeat?”

Of the fifteen Warlock Apprentices sent to assist the army, only less than half survived, and they were all terrified by the bloody scenes they muttered about.

“The escaped soldiers all appeared dazed…

According to them, the Undead encountered during the attack on southwestern Baldim were utterly terrifying.

Alliance soldiers have been fighting against the Undead up to now, and those who follow the army deeply into the ominous clouds are seasoned warriors, yet the Undead encountered were unprecedentedly powerful…

During a night raid, the army was defeated; strange creatures entered the town where the army was stationed under the cover of darkness, almost annihilating the resting officers.

They somehow bypassed the vigilant sentries in silence, and Balfe’s troops were unprepared during the surprise attack, eventually succumbed to the full-on assault of the Undead in chaos…

Listening to Eriv’s description of what the routed soldiers witnessed, Ines frowned:

“Then this Undead Army is likely to rapidly approach the Kilmerton Pass; we must learn from this lesson, maintain lighting throughout the fortress day and night, increase troop shifts, and hold a no-dead-angle night watch.

I will have Harvey lead the magicians to set up warning magic around the fortress.”

Eriv nodded, the drastic and sudden defeat forced the Alliance to contract their defense lines and hold the fortress.

“I’ve already dispatched people to immediately summon nearby troops to retract to the pass; Count Lunaf’s reinforcements are also being sent from the rear.

With the enemy being so overwhelming, even at the cost of returning the just-conquered land, we can’t give them the chance to break us one by one.”

Ines couldn’t help but ask, “Is there any news from Lord Leon?”

Eriv responded, “Lord Tiger has returned, he says Leon has already annihilated the Undead stronghold in the southeast and is on his way back with his troops.”

He finished with a slight dismay: “But no news has been received from the scouts sent to explore other directions of that Undead Army in the past two days.”

“I’m worried the enemy might arrive faster than we anticipated…”
