Chapter 466 - 466 218 The War of the Living
466: Chapter 218: The War of the Living 466: Chapter 218: The War of the Living The Usato Mountains, located in the central part of Kantadar, serve as the central divider of the Kingdom between the north and south, and a natural barrier for the Capital for hundreds of years.
Depending on the terrain of the mountains, two impregnable and treacherous mountain passes were established in the north and east of the King’s Domain, known to be indestructible and impregnable for a thousand years.
If the Orland army wishes to invade the Ustato Kingdom, theoretically, the only way is to detour and march into the plains and valley entrances to the southwest.
In reality, however, this is almost an impossible notion, as the King’s Domain “corridor” of the southwest path is already the heartland of Kantadar.
Looking at the history of warfare between the North and South Kingdom, ignoring the Ustato Kingdom’s passes and penetrating into the heart of Kantadar, one must bear the risk of Kantadar troops directly moving out of the northern mountain passes and cutting off the retreating path of the Orland army.
The former Kings of Orland were not without sovereigns who reached the threshold of the Ustato Kingdom, but each time they faced the rugged mountain passes, they were forced to retreat without success.
…However, the fickleness of the world is unpredictable.
The mountain passes that an army of a hundred thousand could not capture, as of today, have been opened from within for the army of the Northern Kingdom.
The massive Orland Vanguard Army earlier took over the empty northern Ustato city pass from the hands of the Kantadar people.
The huge crossbows once densely mounted on the towering city walls and towers had already been dismantled and destroyed.
Lydwen, clad in military attire, rides a Flying Dragon, entering the Mountain City that no former King has ever set foot in from the sky.
The Fire Dragon named “Overlord” flaps its wings, causing a Gale, and the dragon’s body thunders down into the city square.
The giant beast raises its long neck, the fierce dragon’s head roars softly, hot flames spout from its nostrils and maw, with vertical pupils staring intently at the statue of an ancient Kantadar King slaying dragons in the square, suppressing the innate anger in its heart.
Lydwen gazes at the giant stone statue carved with the figure of the ancient King of Kantadar.
The abstract and giantized ancient King of Kantadar stands atop a dragon corpse, his right hand tightly holding the Urian War Saber, and his left hand grasping the dragon horn while raising the already skeletal dragon head high, symbolizing the heroic deed of dragon slaying.
The difference lies in the fact that although this majestic figure of slaying dragons is fictional.
The feat of killing Flying Dragons, however, is a reality.
The dragon head raised high by the stone statue is not a sculpture, but a genuine dragon bone skull.
In the history recorded by the Royal Family of the Northern Kingdom for hundreds of years, a total of five Fire Dragons bred by the royal household died in the great war with Kantadar.
Two perished within the Northern territories, and three fell in Kantadar territory.
One died in Double Gorge City in the west of Kantadar, one at the hands of a Kantadar Knight.
Another succumbed under the storm of giant arrows from the dense crossbows at the Ustato Mountain pass.
“Remove the dragon remains, and transport them back to the Dragon Tomb in our land for burial,” Lydwen commands the surrounding imperial guard with a solemn voice.
Several members of the King’s Guard immediately climb onto the statue and smash the arm raised high by the stone figure.
The heavy skull of the dragon head falls, shattering the stone figure’s left hand, but the sturdy dragon bone rolls to one side, unscathed.
As the soldiers drag away the ancient dragon bone, Lydwen immediately spurs on the War Beast beneath him, which can no longer contain itself.
The Flying Dragon moves its limbs and climbs towards the statue, letting out a roar.
It rams the statue, toppling and pushing it over, and its dragon claws, still unsatisfied, begin to trample back and forth.
Watching beneath him as the dragon beast vents its rage, the chiseled features of Lydwen’s face cannot help but reveal a hint of pleasure.
He no longer worries whether this is a Kantadar plot, handing over the pass of the Ustato Kingdom, the price would have been too great.
And the Crown Prince who sent the secret letter, having ascended the throne as the new King of Kantadar, indicates that Aviout has likely perished.
The frequent intelligence gathering during this time, along with the non-resistance reaction from Kantadar North since the southern conquest, finally convinced Lydwen of the fact that a civil war is erupting in the Southern Kingdom.
It’s just that in previous years, there was no word that the succession to the throne of the royal lineage of the King of Kantadar was unstable.
It’s unknown what kind of unrest occurred, for Aviout’s Crown Prince to degrade to the point of having to bow his head for help to an external enemy like himself.
Duke Ablo…
Brother of Aviout from a different mother?
This individual who stirred up civil unrest in Kantadar, in a certain sense, legally is closer to the throne than himself a decade ago.
Lydwen couldn’t help but conjure up a mocking smile.
But no matter what, he has now achieved a grand feat that his “cousin” could never reach in his lifetime.
Once this southern campaign is complete, no one will dare question his royal authority.
The army entering the Kantadar Royal Domain, accepting the submission of the new King of Kantadar, he is worthy of the Drakemar family’s ancestors, and worthy of the Dragon Crown upon his head…
…Reilia.
Time will prove that I am more fitting to be a King than he was….
Lydwen closes his eyes, slightly regretful that an old friend cannot witness this moment.
But soon, he puts away the distant memories, with countless methods to suppress the Eastern Nobles flooding his mind.
With this war’s merits and the support of a large number of emerging Lords, he now has much more leverage over the faction of the Austor family.
No matter how many tricks the fox has, it ultimately cannot withstand the great momentum favored by destiny…
Lydwen doesn’t stay long at the mountain pass; he entrusts the troops from the Gray Robe Valley led by Trosa to guard behind him.
After a brief rest, he immediately leads the King’s army across the mountain pass, marching southward through the Ustato Territory as if venturing into uninhabited land.
Within days, the army arrives at the majestic Kantadar Royal City, setting up a large camp outside the city.
Lydwen sits steady in the military tent, meeting Caso’s envoy who has been sent.
The one who comes for an audience is none other than the Palace Minister of Kantadar.
