Chapter 440 - 440 206 The Descent of the Divine Weapon
440: Chapter 206: The Descent of the Divine Weapon 440: Chapter 206: The Descent of the Divine Weapon For decades, the walls of Shatai had never been assaulted with such a deafening clamor.
Corpse Demons, like ghastly bats, swooped over the ramparts crowded with Conscripted Soldiers, as human screams and battle cries echoed under the gloomy sky that was as somber as the apocalypse.
Terrified Militia fired their arrows in panic, without the time to lower their Crossbows, before the wing-flapping Corpse Demons seized their bodies and hurled them down from the walls, where countless bloodthirsty Corpse Ghosts swarmed upon them, their dreadful wails chilling the soul amidst the rending of limbs and flesh.
“Aah nooo—!” Another unfortunate warrior was knocked to the ground, his flesh gruesomely torn from his face by those razor-sharp fangs and claws.
“Die!!” Yevan roared as he swung his War Saber, its Steel Blade cleaving through the creature’s fluttering wings, the spear’s tip piercing the Corpse Demon’s chest and lungs, and with a pull of the blade, Knight Yevan cleaved it in two.
With a stomp, he crushed the head that was still snapping and biting, killing the Corpse Demon that attacked him.
Yevan then saw more and more Militia being dragged over the walls by winged ghouls, forcing him to lead his Attendants and elite Soldiers in continued blood-soaked combat, hunting down the Corpse Demons amidst the chaos on the ramparts, striving to steady the rapidly crumbling morale.
At the foot of the wall, a large group of Undead, manipulated by an invisible will, lifted and propped rudimentary ladders against the parapets.
Undeterred by arrows, the Undead studded with missiles marched forward fearlessly; the dead Wandering Souls were even more “fearless and brave” than the living’s most valiant Soldiers, and such beings, at this moment…
were practically everywhere…
The howling Corpse Ghosts almost seemed to climb the walls, stepping on those grappling the ladders.
The swarming Wandering Souls’ eyes held only the flicker of souls’ fires and the living flesh of those atop the walls.
Ron kept swinging his long sword, severing the heads of the Living Corpses scaling the ramparts.
The veteran glimpsed another ladder smeared with remnants of flesh and blood about to reach the wall and hurriedly turned to call out loudly to his troops.
Several strong men immediately grasped long stakes, thrusting them before the ladder could touch the wall.
The stakes knocked the vertically positioned ladder back down, collapsing it into the horde and crushing a line of Corpse Ghosts.
But this was just a futile delay; despite the crudeness of the besieging undead apparatuses, free from the fear of life and death, free from pain and suffering, the hordes commanded by an invisible will kept setting up ladders wave after wave amidst the frenzied assault, and scaling the walls was only a matter of time.
No matter the injury or loss endured, the cold and relentless Undead would only stop when the very last one was annihilated.
“Yaaah!!” Amid the tumultuous ramparts, a bloodied Attendant in armor guarded Yevan’s left flank, using his Shield to push down the frenziedly biting Corpse Ghosts from the parapet.
Suddenly, a Gale whooshed overhead, and that Attendant couldn’t help but raise his gaze from beneath his visor, his eyes widening at the sight of a creature as large as a Giant Bat, many times bigger than a Winged Corpse Demon, swooping down from the sky.
“Lord!
Above!!” The loyal Attendant cried out desperately.
Engaged in slaying Corpse Ghosts, Yevan reacted to the servant’s alert before he even heard it, breaking free from the melee and quickly turning around, raising his Kite Shield carved with a human face to brace for the diving Giant Bat Ghost.
But the young Knight Kantadar still underestimated the terrifying force brought by the creature’s gravity-enhanced fall and its own massive weight.
The thick limbs of the Giant Bat Ghost crushed the Knight’s sturdy Shield.
In shock, Yevan found himself powerless to dodge the unblockable force; his body, clad in plate armor, was instantly pinned to the ground by another claw of the Giant Corpse Demon, gratingly dragging along the brick floor, the impact causing blood to fill his visor.
The Attendant dropped his nail hammer and picked up a Spear from a fallen body, roaring as he rushed towards the beast atop his Lord, driving the sharp spear deep into the back of the Giant Bat Ghost.
The steel spear pierced the tough hide, but with a flap of its powerful right wing, the creature flung the Attendant attempting to save his master down the inner wall with a hefty thud.
Enduring the pain, Yevan used the opportunity to stab his War Saber upward into the beast’s chest, but turning its head, the Bat Ghost seemed unharmed, baring its fanged maw to latch onto its prey below.
In a rush, Yevan blocked his head with the Shield, which with a crack, got further twisted by the gaping bite.
Feeling the monster’s writhing power, the Knight panicked and let go with his left hand.
The Bat Ghost’s head jerked, flinging the shield off Yevan’s arm.
Had Yevan not let go in time, his entire arm would have been torn off with it.
But facing the jaws that closed in again, Yevan helplessly raised his hand in front of his visor in a vain block, bracing for death’s embrace.
Visions of his mother’s loving face…
his wife’s visage…
his son’s adorable little face hovered before his eyes…
…
Thunder, echoing through the clouds.
Lightning, slicing through the darkened sky.
——Boom!!
A muffled penetrative sound reached the ears of the despondent Yevan.
That was the sound of something heavy piercing flesh and bone.
Dark blood and fragments of flesh spilled from the Giant Bat Ghost’s neck and chest, staining the ornate bearded visor covering Yevan’s face and nearly blurring his vision.
With a crackling noise, radiant blue serpents of lightning burst forth, coursing through the Bat Ghost from within.
For the first time, Magic Power and lightning allowed the evil spirit within the beast’s body to feel pain, and a piercing, wretched scream erupted.
