Chapter 437 - 437 205 Death March

437: Chapter 205: Death March 437: Chapter 205: Death March Beneath Shatai City, Ron’s subordinates led the crowd to shout loudly at the city walls, the voices of thousands reverberating powerfully.

The refugees did not understand the purpose, but still habitually obeyed their leader’s orders, most of them thinking it was just a plea for more relief from the city.

Only those close to Ron heard the words from their leader’s mouth, their faces instantly showing alarm and confusion.

Yevan watched the teeming crowd below, hearing the pleading and threats from the refugee leader, not understanding the so-called “monster” mentioned, nor easily believing the man’s word.

He dared not open the city gates for the thousands of disaster victims below, waiting anxiously for his father to arrive and make a decision.

However, a City Guard Soldier suddenly, frightfully reminded the Baron’s second son, pointing towards the hillside at the far right: “Sir, look!

There are many figures in the east!”

Knight Yevan’s heart tightened, hastening to look in the direction of the noise.

The swarming silhouettes from the eastern countryside spread like a horizon slowly approaching.

An enormous army?!

Gazing roughly at the exaggerated size and shape on the other side genuinely made Yevan break out in a cold sweat.

He didn’t believe the so-called monsters mentioned by the leader of the disaster victims below, it was just the gloomy sky that made it truly impossible for Yevan to discern the appearance of the army.

Was it the Seryan Kingdom’s army retaliating with a counterattack?

Had the Seryans come to fight?

This was Yevan’s first panicked thought.

Receiving no response to their knocking, Ron climbed onto a nearby cart, looking towards the terrifying scene now within view, and couldn’t help but curse loudly.

He turned his head, knowing that the young knight on the wall did not believe his warning, and in desperation, immediately switched tactics.

“Listen, boy!

If you don’t open the city gate, I’ll lead these homeless people to assist that ‘army’ in attacking.” Ron shouted threateningly: “If you let us in, we can still help you defend the walls, fool!!”

Hearing the refugee leader’s threat, Yevan suddenly felt there was something abnormal about the people below.

Even when bandits had previously plundered the land, the disaster victims had never stirred up this much, and the Urians didn’t care about these penniless wretches; they only captured some slaves transporting goods and took them away.

So why was the leader of the disaster victims now so agitated and afraid?

Monsters?

Was he trying to deceive them to open the city gates to plunder the town?

But with such a massive army bearing down, even if these disaster victims rushed into the city to loot and kill, what purpose would that serve?

Still defend the walls?

Against such a massive Seryan army, what need was there for the small Shatai City to defend itself?

With his father’s temperament, he was probably considering surrendering immediately.

In his anxiety, Yevan ordered a sentinel to secretly descend in a basket from a less-populated corner of the eastern side to scout out the army’s situation.

He turned to look towards the family’s fortress tower inside the city, complaining about his father’s slow arrival, fearing that the crowd below and Shatai City would be utterly destroyed.

The crude ladders constructed and abandoned by the bandit Urians, though simple, were enough to allow the disaster victims below to climb direly short-staffed city walls.

However, soon after, a terrified cry came from the east, making Yevan turn his head back.

“Monsters!

Real monsters!

Dead people!

Corpse Ghosts, Ghost Fire——!!”

The sentinel who had just been dispatched to sneak out of the city came fleeing back from the right side of the parapet, his eyes as though he had seen some terrifying sight.

“…it’s over…it’s over, sir, it’s the apocalypse!

The gods have brought the apocalypse!!

We are doomed!”

Crying and yelling, the sentinel’s legs gave out and he even tripped and fell to the ground.

A chill rose in Yevan’s heart, he quickly rushed over, picked up the trembling sentinel and asked: “What Corpse Ghosts or not?

What exactly did you see?”

“—Ah, no, all dead!

Not an army, but bodies with Ghost Fires in their eyes, bodies that crawled out of the graves!

The dead have all returned to the world, surely it’s the divine punishment from God Vinoles.” The terrified sentinel cried out…

…After a moment…

The Fat Baron, with his pants still undone, finally arrived breathlessly under the inner wall.

When he saw the flood of refugees crazily swarming into the city through the north gate, he was startled and then furious as if woken from a nightmare.

“Yevan!

Yevan you fool!

Have you gone mad!?

Why did you let those wretches inside?!”

Baron Shatai, protected by the Guard, hurried up onto the city wall.

However, looking at the arriving father, the young Knight Kantadar did not want to argue, but just numbly pointed outside of the city.

Baron Shatai, suppressing his shock and anger, turned his head to look, and instantly, the curses he was about to shout were choked back in his throat.

In a moment, he no longer cared about those refugees who had been let in.

“What do we do, father?” Yevan asked somewhat helplessly.

The young knight had heard of wizards using Desecration witchcraft to awaken the dead from Tombs, but the scene outside the city was like something out of a nightmare, far beyond what he could comprehend.

“Sir…sir, let’s run.” a terrified Soldier trembled weakly.

At this moment no officer scolded his cowardice, facing the horrifying throng approaching Shatai City from across the hills, they didn’t even have the option to surrender.

Run?

But where to run?

Yevan swallowed his dry throat while surveying the surroundings of the city.

If there was somewhere to run to, the disaster victims wouldn’t have desperately threatened to break into the city.

With monstrous corpse masses on three sides and the city backed by a large lake, Shatai City had no route for retreat.

But facing an apocalyptic catastrophe, the terrified Baron Shatai surveyed his surroundings, looking at the equally terrified soldiers, his fat face suddenly calmed down.
