Chapter 320 - 320 157 Intersection of Lives
320: Chapter 157: Intersection of Lives 320: Chapter 157: Intersection of Lives Walking on the street, he planned to put away the documents first, then go find Olivia to tell her the good news about the apple orchard.
As he passed through the village crossroad, Leon suddenly heard a burst of clamor and astonishment from the people in the distance.
Unsure of what had happened, he stopped in his tracks and looked towards the southern village road.
He saw rooftop workers standing on the beams, gazing around, while passing villagers pointed and chatted animatedly about it.
Several young strong men, originally busy with construction, had stopped their work to join the crowd gathering there.
Mixed with surprise and fear, the chatter was coming from the village entrance at the southern end of Selva.
…What was going on?
He could even hear villagers exclaiming words like “Demon,” and “spirit monster.”
Looking past the crowd, Leon saw a foreign knight from the Southern Kingdom riding into the village.
Named Larian, the Ranger Knight, covered in dust and wearing a cloak, did not continue to ride after entering the village but dismounted and, holding the reins of his mount, passed through the curious crowd that followed him.
Leon walked towards him and finally saw what had drawn so many subjects to gather around.
Beside the Ranger Knight’s warhorse, there hung a huge, shriveled yellow-brown monster’s head.
The monster’s head was about the size of four or five basketballs, with human-like facial features but a protruding jawbone, massive nasal bridge, fan-like earlobes, a mouth full of sharp teeth, and wide eye sockets that held no eyes.
The dry, rough skin clung tightly to the facial bones, giving the impression of something long dead and dried up, similar to the Living Corpses in the Spirit-like Field.
Noticing the Lord’s arrival, the villagers made way.
Larian also saw the approaching local Lord and immediately stopped, bringing a hand to his chest in salute: “Mr.
Leon, I didn’t know when you had returned.
I apologize, it seems I have caused some disturbance.”
“I just returned to Selva.
Did you go outside the village?”
Leon looked at the other’s spoils of war and asked doubtfully, “Where did you get this monster head?
From the forest?”
He had seen many wolves, tigers, leopards, and human Undead, but this was his first time seeing such a non-human Living Corpse.
Considering the size of the head, the creature’s torso must not be small.
Larian nodded and answered, “A few days ago, that Sir Sambu came to me at the inn, saying that someone had spotted a huge monster wandering in the woods.
But since your troops were deployed elsewhere and couldn’t dispatch anyone, Sir Sambu said he couldn’t leave his post to investigate and thought of asking me to handle it.”
The Ranger Knight shrugged: “I figured I was free anyway, so why not make the trip?”
“It seems the previous clearing wasn’t thorough; to think there’s still such an oversight near Selva.” Leon appreciated the other’s help: “Thank you for intervening again.”
“It’s nothing, just my old profession, battling evil monsters is inherently the duty of a Ranger Knight, not to mention, the bounty Sir Sambu offered was quite generous, which helps with the travel expenses,” Larian said with a smile.
“Old profession?” Leon raised his eyebrows slightly: “From what you say, are Ranger Knights meant to make a living by hunting demons?”
Although he had once been praised by Trosa for having the style of a Ranger Knight, Leon really hadn’t thoroughly understood what the so-called “Ranger Knight” on this continent actually entailed.
So, Ranger Knights, they are similar to Demon Hunters and Bounty Hunters, right?
It felt like the knight before him had stepped right out of a standard RPG, a bona fide “Brave Warrior.”
“Upholding justice and combating monsters has always been the creed of Ranger Knights since ancient times,” Larian explained with some emotion.
“You’re not wrong to say that hunting demons is a way we make a living, it indeed is one of my sources of income.”
“However, old-fashioned folks like me are rare now.
I don’t know about other Kingdoms, but in Kantadar, many families that were once famous as Ranger Knights no longer wander and fight demons like I do…”
Larian seemed somewhat nostalgic as he explained: “After all, the outdoor monsters have been nearly exterminated since ancient times.”
He turned and patted the monster head hanging on his horse’s rump: “Like this Mire Giant Troll, I’ve only seen them in ancient texts.
It’s actually wandering around the forest in the form of an Undead.
I heard that there have been many Undead appearing lately in the southern woods.
Are there Wizards causing trouble around Selva?”
Leon shook his head, not revealing the full truth: “…I’m not sure, but I’ve already brought the troops back to the territory, and we will strengthen our defenses against these forest Undead in the future.”
Larian nodded casually, but deep down, he had serious doubts about the security of this place.
Though from what he’d observed so far, the residents here seemed to be living well.
Yet within such a short time, he had heard about conflicts involving the Lord, encounters with assassins, and battles against wandering Undead monsters…
If it weren’t for the excellent reputation and noble character of the present Lord, he would never consider leaving the six ladies in this place.
Of course, seeing Martha and the others’ attitudes, it seemed they had fully decided not to leave, not wanting to be a burden.
Larian really had no position to persuade them.
All he could do now was to stay a little longer and keep an eye on the situation in Selva.
If Mr.
Leon’s troops could competently defend the territory, he would feel at ease to set off again.
…
After exchanging a few pleasantries, Leon didn’t keep Larian from reporting back.
The Ranger Knight bid farewell to the Lord and approached the large residence at the village, where, due to the commotion, guards were already alerted, with Sambu waiting outside.
