Chapter 262 - 262 133 Envoy from Wolf Territory_2
262: Chapter 133 Envoy from Wolf Territory_2 262: Chapter 133 Envoy from Wolf Territory_2 Leon realized, it was the decree issued by the current king upon his ascension.
No wonder Mr.
Brian Sr.
had not reminded him.
The other had been living in seclusion with Olivia in the countryside for years, obviously unaware of the changes in policies and rules governing the noble lords.
“Does this decree only prohibit the magicians of the Northern Society?” Leon tried to parse the words carefully.
“No, technically it applies to all magicians, but in Orland Country, the spellcasters are mostly trained by the Northern Society.
Oh, your little attendant is indeed special, his accent must be from another kingdom, right?
But even foreign spellcasters must obey the decree…
Of course, if it goes undetected, an unenforceable law is naturally just a piece of paper, so you better hide him well in front of that Northern Wizard, otherwise, if it comes to arguing, our position will be very troublesome.”
“So, yesterday, when treating the seriously wounded, there were a few soldiers under your command who assisted and saw Kovis casting his spell in the surgical tent,” Leon frowned.
“Don’t worry, I have already ordered them to keep it secret.
Besides, treating injured soldiers isn’t considered a breach of the decree; saving lives is an exception in the law, even during war.
However, I do not know if that boy used magic to attack the enemy publicly yesterday.
Our enemies certainly won’t keep our secrets,” Sir Redo expressed his concern.
Leon waved his hand.
In yesterday’s battle, Kovis barely managed to maintain the Netti Card and to replenish his own Magic Power, not having any spare energy left for other spells.
But now that he was aware of this peculiar decree, he would indeed need to be more careful in the future.
“By the way, Lord Redo, since the decree specifically prohibits magicians from interfering in disputes among nobles…
What if one of the disputing parties, a noble lord himself, is a magician?
How would that be handled?” Leon stroked his chin.
“That?
I’ve never heard of such a case; forgive my ignorance, I really don’t know if there exists a lord who is also a mage within the country.
In that case, it would probably be up to His Majesty the King to personally arbitrate,” Redo shook his head.
Leon quietly ground his teeth, thinking it was a bit troublesome.
Although Kovis hadn’t used magic in front of the enemy, he himself hadn’t refrained from using Magic Power in the melee.
No wonder yesterday, during the fight, after Canis took a heavy hit from Magic Power, he kept fussing about “shameful witchcraft” and “despicable spellcasters,” not letting go of any chance to complain.
However, if he really wanted to bluff his way through, it wouldn’t be too difficult, Leon thought of an idea and no longer delayed, raising his hand to summon the envoy.
Soon, two figures who had been stripped of their weapons walked into the hall.
One was an old knight from the Gunnar Family, not young, clad in plate armor.
The other, a middle-aged man unfamiliar to Leon, wore robe armor overlayed with light Armor.
This familiar style of attire and the uniquely shaped spear blade staff in the hands of the soldiers guarding the entrance clearly identified him as a wizard from the Northern Society, just like Master Hilgard, the wizard serving Count Trolsa.
“Respected Lord Leon Pendragon, I admire your bravery in achieving victory.
I am a messenger from Wolfenhol…” Mr.
Hengkel held his helmet under one arm and bowed deeply toward the young knight lord with black hair and black eyes seated at the head of the table, patting the back of the victor according to noble custom, then introduced himself and his purpose.
“I am here on behalf of the Gunnar Family, requesting the return of Lord Canis.
We can discuss the ransom and conditions, but before that, I would like to check on his safety to ensure that the eldest son of Baron Gunnar has not suffered any dishonorable or unfair treatment.”
Leon leaned back in his chair and addressed the old knight from the Wolf Family, “Your young master is not in any life-threatening situation, and I have no taste for humiliating prisoners of war, but don’t expect any special treatment or freedom of movement for him.
Because of your unjust invasion, how many lives were lost in this meaningless battle?
I have allowed him to stay in a clean cell, with soldiers ensuring he gets two meals a day so he won’t starve, which is already exceedingly lenient considering I do not wish to escalate the conflict further.”
Having said that, he turned his attention to the wizard beside Henkel.
“And you?
You seem to be a wizard from the Northern Society?
Since when can you intervene in disputes between nobles?”
Leon took the initiative, whether there was justification or not, launching a preemptive counter-charge.
The middle-aged wizard shook his head, clarifying to Leon, “Lord Pendragon, please don’t misunderstand.
My name is Met Redi, employed by General Trolsa to support the war against Kantadar.
I am here at the behest of the Count, to verify Baron Gunnar’s accusations against the Farolis Family.”
Lord Canis had written, accusing the Thorny Flower family of violating the king’s decrees, using black witchcraft to employ monsters to harass Wolf Territory.
They provided a knight’s mummified corpse decorated with the Thorny Flower emblem.
I have already inspected it.”
“It’s sheer nonsense.” Leon retorted coldly.
It was easy to deal with such accusations—the living corpses that emerged from the spirit-like field were indeed not summoned by their own spellcasters.
Although it was inconvenient to explain the true reason, refuting the claim was equally straightforward.
“A mummified corpse carrying the Thorny Flower emblem?
If that counts as evidence, I could bring you ten or a hundred, and tough Gunnar Family’s emblem onto them.”
Leon sneered and turned to the old Knight Henkel, who stood beside Wizard Met, and counter-asked, “Do you take the people of the Farolis family for fools?
Even if we were to do such a thing, why would we intentionally leave evidence of our own identity?
Is that all the Gunnar family can do, engage in such childish frame-ups?”
The logic was simple, and Knight Henkel naturally fell silent, given the situation he was subdued and found it inconvenient to argue, merely keeping his head down in silence.
Met nodded, “Upon closer inspection, I indeed found no traces of Undead Magic on that mummified corpse.
However, according to what the returning cavalrymen of Wolfenhol stated, they witnessed a powerful warrior appearing and disappearing out of nowhere during their charge.
This closely resembles a spell for concealing one’s form.
Was there a spellcaster ‘assisting’ your warriors in combat?” Met asked meaningfully, emphasizing the word ‘assist.’
“It was but a few magical artifacts, and what of it?
Can I not use acquired treasures to aid my soldiers in combat?
The Gunnar family Young Master’s armor, engraved with magic, must be even more inappropriate then?” Leon responded, dropping his mocking tone for a stinging retort.
“I see…
I have no further questions, it seems this could indeed just be a misunderstanding, then this dispute no longer concerns the Society.” Met seemed to understand, pressing no further.
Leon was slightly surprised to see him dropping the subject so readily.
That easy to dismiss?
Leon had prepared plenty of arguments, anticipating that if push came to shove, he’d reveal a Netti card from the Boiling Heart as proof of possessing magical artifacts, striving to conceal his recent learning of some minor spells as a spellcasting lord.
After all, on the battlefield, the only direct witness to a Magic Power attack who still lived was Canis alone; mere contradicting statements could hardly count as evidence.
But it seemed the Wizard called Met was no longer interested in pursuing whether the Thorny Flower family had violated any decrees.
Conversely, Knight Henkel was more concerned about the Young Master’s safety at this moment.
Thus, before formally initiating the negotiations for ransom and terms of release, Leon and his group stood up, leading them to the cell where Canis was being held.
Upon reaching the jail, Knight Henkel finally saw the Wolf Family Young Master, stoutly secured with heavy, cast-steel shackles.
The burdensome restraints were not out of Leon’s desire to torture, but because Canis was an exceptionally formidable Knight of Valor.
Without such heavy solid steel fetters, ordinary iron shackles simply couldn’t confine him.
According to Leon’s memory, the inferior shackles used by the Kantadar mercenaries to bind slaves could barely be harder than bamboo sticks in Canis’s hands, requiring just a twist of his muscle to break.
Of course, besides taking utmost precautions in confinement, Canis was treated far better than Mamor had been in the past.
At least his cell was clean, with soldiers assigned to maintain it, negating any foul smell.
“Hm?
Henkel, what’s with bringing so many people?
Just to see me in disgrace?” Canis, previously lounging against the wall on a straw wooden bed, felt like an animal on display in a cage and couldn’t help feeling irritated.
“Not at all, Lord Canis, before you are released, I will strive to secure a more decent treatment for you,” Old Henkel reluctantly commented.
Met quietly surveyed the surroundings.
After the old knight confirmed the Young Master of the Wolf family’s safety, as they left the cell, the Wizard stepped casually next to Leon and whispered, “Master Hillgarde mentioned a Sir Leon claiming to possess a talent for magic, may I ask if he was referring to you, Lord Pendragon?”
