Chapter 232 - 232 122 Period of Strife_3
232: Chapter 122 Period of Strife_3 232: Chapter 122 Period of Strife_3 At least, according to Mr.
Brian Sr., the former king was by no means the cruel tyrant as the current rumors suggest.
But for the common people who never had the chance to meet the king and those who did not live through the former king’s reign, the dead cannot speak in their own defense.
Moreover…
he indeed had a single “crime,” which was, to ordinary people, indisputable.
Thinking of this, Leon hugged Olivia even tighter.
But whatever the case, it was all in the past now.
Although Olivia was unaware of the details, she probably wouldn’t have any interest in the throne even if she knew.
Leon had no intention of using the girl’s bloodline to reach for Orland’s throne.
Once he had repaid Miss Lora’s kindness, he would be content to live a simple life as a small lord, hugging Olivia every other day—living cozily with his wife and children on odd days and drinking and feasting with friends on even days.
…
The main defense structures that Mr.
Brian Sr.
planned to set up at Longka were made up of a tall wall flanked by two shorter ones, creating three lines of wooden barriers.
A ring of high walls created a fire break around the village homes and the arrow tower, which would serve as Longka’s final defense position.
The two lower walls, on the other hand, were built far away to the east and west of Longka, centered around the village, creating a redundant, in-depth field.
These lower walls, coupled with trenches and traps, would extend from the river to the north of the village all the way to the woodland to the south, effectively turning this small village into a simple pass that blocked routes.
In the space between the high wall and the low walls, the in-depth field would be divided by trenches and horse barriers into several areas, which could effectively stop the cavalry.
Of course, no cavalry commander would be foolish enough to directly attack these defensive structures, which were clearly tailored to thwart them.
If battle broke out, these structures could only serve as auxiliary means to work with our own infantry to delay the enemy and slow down their assault.
It would take quite some time to dismantle these barriers that obstructed the formation’s advance.
If the attacking enemy had fewer forces than our own, they probably wouldn’t dare to directly assault such structures.
But if the enemy greatly outnumbered our own…
Unless absolutely overpowered and forced to retreat…
Standing at the top of Longka’s newly built arrow tower, Leon looked far off to the south and north sides.
The terrain of the woodland and the riverbank would be the true keys to victory.
Of course, that presupposes that our own lines wouldn’t be directly crushed by the enemy from the front.
Otherwise, we’d have no choice but to flee and fall back to defend Selva.
Leon turned around to look east.
The women and children evacuating to the rear would join the local woman and a portion of the workforce to establish similar defenses on the North Slope of Seval.
Leon hoped he would never have to use the defenses of Selva.
He similarly hoped that Longka’s defenses would also remain unused.
Best if the enemy were foolish enough to directly attack Knight Marcello stationed at Wacht Castle.
Or even to attack Farolis City with its solid walls, Leon would be most grateful; he could then simply join with Marcello’s troops and easily “shut the door and beat the dog.”
Hoping the enemy wouldn’t choose Longka as their target, Leon, with his keen eyesight, suddenly spotted a column of troops carrying long and short weapons at the far end of his view to the east.
Of course, these weren’t enemies who had bypassed Longka Pass; looking at the Swallowtail Flag of the Thorny Flower Family, along with the familiar figure at the head, this was Azeryan, who had gone back to Selva earlier to call for reinforcements.
But as he watched the approaching column of reinforcements get closer and estimated the number of heads, even without counting the supply wagons behind them, Leon realized their numbers were double what he had expected.
He raised an eyebrow, wondering where Azeryan had managed to scrounge up an additional square of forces.
Leon turned and climbed down from the arrow tower, preparing to immediately greet his friend; however, as he reached the center of the village, he saw Kovis running over from the direction of the main house.
“…My lord!” exclaimed the blonde youth as he hurried over.
Leon had to meet him halfway, “What’s the matter?
You seem urgent.”
Kovis reached his lord’s side and offered a rueful smile, “The griffin egg…
it has hatched.”
