204: 111 Chapter “Framing and Scapegoating”_3 204: 111 Chapter “Framing and Scapegoating”_3 Lady Adelina looked at the beautiful young girl with not only gratitude but also genuine affection.
After chatting for quite a while about family matters, Leon and Olivia finally set off on their journey home.
Before they left, they had received a promise from Lady Adelina that she would personally reward them as a token of her thanks.
Leon, of course, could not refuse such a formal gesture and gladly accepted it along with Olivia.
He wondered to himself how many Gold Coins the lady would give him.
At the dinner the previous evening, Leon had learned from a noble nearby that Lady Adelina was the daughter of an Earl from the Great Vestra Territory.
Years ago, she had been courted by Baron Eriv and brought a large dowry that even saved the Farolis Family from a crisis when she married and moved here.
Such a noblewoman would naturally be generous in expressing her gratitude.
With this anticipation, Leon and Olivia left Farolis and traveled safely on horseback, arriving back in Selva that same afternoon.
After parting ways with Olivia at the front door of their home, Leon immediately went upstairs to find Kovis in his bedroom.
The blonde youth was sitting by the bed, holding a Griffin Egg, maintaining the Demon Rune on it as part of his daily routine.
“You’re back, my lord.”
Kovis, seeing him, put the Griffin Egg back into a nearby box and got up to greet him.
“I just got home.
How have you been resting?
Are you feeling better?” Leon asked with concern as he walked into the room.
“I had a good sleep and feel much better now,” Kovis patted his chest, for he only made such an excuse to leave Leon alone with the girl.
Leon nodded, glad to hear it.
Pulling out a slender fabric-wrapped parcel from his pocket, he laid it on the table and asked Kovis, “Could you look at something for me?
I only know it’s a sedative, have you seen this stuff before?”
Kovis approached the table, leaned over for a better look, and picked up an unburned piece of incense to examine it more closely.
After checking the substance’s appearance and sniffing it closely, Kovis put it down, nodding to his lord, “It should be ‘Comforting Spirit Fragrance.'”
“What is that?
Tell me more,” Leon asked, sitting down.
Kovis settled back on the edge of the bed and explained…
“Comforting Spirit Fragrance is not a sedative, at least not originally.
It is something widely used among the Mage Atiyas group in the Eastern Continent, made from certain local plants to aid in relaxation and sleep.
However, because it targets mages with significant Magic Power in their bodies, it naturally reduces the activity of the Magic Elements in ordinary people significantly.
Therefore, if a person without enough Magic Elements inhaled too much of this incense, it would be inevitable for them to fall into a deep sleep.”
“Something from Athias?”
Leon frowned.
“How did this item end up on Orland’s land?
Has the Black Robe Empire exported a lot of these to the Western Continent?”
Kovis shook his head in confusion, “I don’t know about that, but Comforting Spirit Fragrance is not exactly cheap in Athias.
You mentioned in large quantities?
How large?”
“Large enough to have many rooms in a castle lit up…” Leon stroked his chin, feeling the oddity of the situation.
From last night’s interrogation, the castle servant under torture confessed that the two assassins who bribed him heavily were men from Baron Gunnar.
Leon also learned from his Knight colleagues that the Thorny Flower Family had an unresolved deep grudge against Baron Gunnar, a prominent Royalist.
This attempt to disgrace and blame Baron Eriv’s wife, and clearly intent on framing the friendly Anquilla Family, hints at a vicious conspiracy by Baron Gunnar.
If not for Olivia’s unexpected intervention last night breaking up this plot, had it succeeded, regardless of whether people believed the poor Anquilla youth’s defense the next day or not, the three friendly families, including Lady Adelina’s maternal family, would inevitably have fallen into a serious diplomatic crisis.
That’s to say nothing of the irrational actions Baron Eriv, who was still commanding troops at the frontlines, might have taken upon learning of his wife’s dishonor and tragic death.
If not for Olivia’s unexpected appearance last night, the outcome is unimaginable.
But the key to the conspiracy, this sedative, happened to be from Athias?
How did Baron Gunnar, an Orland noble, get involved with the Black Robe Empire?
And Boris…
that insignificant village thug.
How did a petty crook like him come by Athias incense?
Leon was plunged into doubt.
He knew too little information to piece together a coherent narrative; aside from not knowing detailed feuds between Baron Gunnar and the Thorny Flower Family, it was hard to infer the inside story of this conspiracy.
Leon shook his head, temporarily giving up on thinking.
After all, the conspiracy had already been thwarted, and the Farolis Family would surely take strict precautions in the future.
The secret behind this was a headache for Baron Eriv to deal with.
At the moment, the best help he could offer was to remind the Sealing Lord about the origin of this substance.
After all, apart from his own side, there were probably few in the entire Kingdom who could recognize where this sedative came from.
“That’s alright, I won’t disturb your rest any longer.” Having found his answer, Leon gathered up the wrapped fabric, preparing to leave.
“My lord, I actually have something else,” Kovis suddenly reminded as he saw Leon about to leave.
“What is it?”
Kovis pointed to the box where the Griffin Egg was stored.
“The time is about right, it’s been incubating for so long, this Griffin Egg might be close to hatching.”
