Kissing Hellfire: Marry Me, Evil Lord
Chapter 81: This Lady?

Chapter 81: This Lady?

"Finally after weeks, we have the chance to take a stroll in the town’s streets again," said Vivian.

Lauren and Vivian walked down the streets at the part of town where there were small stores lined up on each side of the streets. Lauren felt bad about her session of nightmares last night and how Alec witnessed her breaking down, but she knew she would gain nothing if she kept on thinking about it, so she just set it aside and tried to erase it from her mind.

"Are your wounds fully healed now?" Vivian asked.

"The cuts on my legs are still visible but they will fully heal in a day or two," answered Lauren before they stopped at a store of women’s accessories.

"Oh, this hairpin is nice! Look Lauren," Vivian showed her a silver hairpin with a flower stone.

Lauren smiled. "Yes, that looks good on you, Madame Locket."

While Vivian was busy looking in the mirror to check if the hairpin really looked good on her, Lauren looked for an accessory of her liking.

She was about to pick up the hairpin with small gemstones but before she could touch it, someone laid her hand on it first.

Lauren froze not because someone else got the hairpin she wanted, but because of the rings on the woman’s hand.

"She had two diamond fingers on her index finger, one with a ruby stone and the other one with emerald..." She remembered what Lady Priscilla said about the lady she saw in the deranged human’s past, the person the priestess believed to be the mastermind of the rebellion and who was corrupting humans to stir chaos in Evardin.

Lauren was about to look at the woman’s face when a scream made her look in the opposite direction. A young lady wearing rubbish clothes holding a little girl who was not older than five was on her knees and pleading to the officers.

"P-please forgive us for stealing, officers! My sister is starving since last night and w-we don’t have money to buy food!"

Lauren turned to find the woman with ruby and emerald rings only to find no one was standing anywhere near the store where she and Vivian stood. She looked past Vivian to see if the woman was one of those walking ahead of them, but Lauren could not really tell.

She wanted to go and search thinking that the woman must have not gone too far, but the poor lady’s cry when one of the officers kicked her stomach stopped her.

"That is what you get, you little rat! You should know better than run around stealing in the town!"

"P-please spare us, officer!"

The fat officer was about to kick the lady again but Lauren stepped up before he could.

"You should not assault a young lady in public, officer," Lauren said and the three officers who were from far villages and had just recently assumed their posts in the town were unfamiliar with Lauren’s face.

With Lauren not wearing flashy clothes and jewelry as she did not want to catch attention while strolling in the town, the officers thought that she only belonged to the middle class.

The fat officer who kicked the lady gave her an arrogant look. "You should not bother yourself with this, Miss. We are only doing our job. Thieves like these two deserved to be punished. You better go back to your business and stop minding ours."

With how the officer addressed her and the tone used, Lauren knew that the officers must be new in the town. Not everyone knew her in the town, only the members of the high society whom she came across during soirees and balls, but she doubted if there was an officer or a member of the council who didn’t know her. After all, she had been entangled with quite a few scandalous events in the town in the past.

"May I know what these two had stolen?"

The young lady crawled to Lauren’s feet. The little girl who seemed to be her younger sister was crying by her side.

"W-we just stole some food in an inn, milady... my sister and I have been starving for days! Please help us!"

"Shut up, rat!" The other officer walked toward Lauren to drag the lady away but Lauren put herself in front of the officer.

"Which inn they have stolen from? I will pay for it."

The officer shook his head, an arrogant smile was plastered on his unsightly face.

"Come on, Miss. Don’t make it hard for us. These thieves will continue their dirty doings if we let their actions slide. The law should be strictly implemented to avoid stealing incidents like this. Now I suggest you step away before we do something impolite."

"I believe it was not stated in the book of laws that the officers can assault people in public unless you are running after a deadly criminal. But in this case, you are assaulting poor girls who only stole some food. Harassing them especially in public is unnecessary."

Lauren was about to tell the dumb officers who she was to make them listen to her, but before she could, a carriage stopped near them.

"Lord Everston!" The officers said in unison the moment Alec stepped out of his carriage.

Alec’s gaze found Lauren and his eyes drop to the girls behind her.

"What is happening here?" Alec asked and the fat officer was quick to reply.

"We caught thieves, milord, and we are disciplining them but this lady is making it hard for us. She is meddling with our job!" the officer lamented.

"This lady?" Alec’s eyes narrowed at how the officer addressed Lauren as if she was a lowly peasant.

"Yes, Lord Ever-"

"I believe that is not the right way of addressing a princess, officer."

The officers’ eyes widened in shock.

"Prin... princess?"

"Yes, Princess Lauren. My wife. I hope you were not rude to her," Alec’s words drained the blood from the officers’ faces.
