Chapter 73: Another News

"Princess Eloise is a black mage!" The shout alarmed everyone.

King Martin’s jaw dropped and could not move from where he was standing when he saw how Eloise turned into a black mage in front of his eyes.

Queen Thalia also didn’t expect the sudden turn of events. She never imagined one of her children turning into a black mage, a being that people forsaken and despised the most.

"Protect the King and Queen!" yelled one of the councilmen and the royal guards were quick to surround Eloise.

Dominic, coming from a family of arch mages, who had come across black mages in the past and was skilled in fighting them, pulled the silver chain on his neck and turned it into a long chain using a spell, and with his swift moves, he managed to pull Eloise down and locked her wrists on her back with the chain. He also did the same to her ankles so she wouldn’t be able to attack anyone.

"Oh, please no! Don’t hurt my Eloise!" Queen Thalia cried and was about to take a step toward Eloise but Cassandra held her elbow.

"No, mother. If Eloise had turned into a black mage, we can do nothing about it," Cassandra said, her bloodshot eyes looking at her sister who looked nothing less than a monster. She knew there were times in the past when Eloise did forbidden sorcery but she also knew that the officer she had a relationship with was supplying her medicine to suppress her black mage blood, and she remembered Eloise hadn’t run out of medicine yet.

Lauren stood by the sideline, sipping wine calmly like she was only watching a theater play.

"Your Majesty, what shall we do with Princess Eloise?" One of the court ministers stepped up. "It is clear to everyone present here in the castle tonight that she is a black mage. Even if she is your daughter and a royal, we can never make an exception. A black mage shall be killed as letting her live will pose a threat and will stir fear in the townsfolk."

"I agree, Your Majesty," another minister seconded and the joyous celebration suddenly turned like a court trial.

Lauren noticed how Queen Thalia’s furious eyes were looking at her. She subtly raised her glass in the air like she was offering a toast which made the Queen ball her fists. There was no satisfaction in revenge if she would not let her enemies know that she was the one who caused their misfortune.

"Martin, please! It is our daughter! Maybe we can find a cure!" Queen Thalia went to the King and held his arm as she cried. "You can’t just kill her!"

"Queen Thalia, if I may speak, this is not just a matter between the royal family, but also a matter of the court as this concerns the well-being of Evardin’s people. Should the Supreme House know that you are sparing a black mage because she is your family, they might hold a trial for King Martin’s dethronement," said Lionel, the council chief.

The Supreme House acted like a higher council, the people above every king and they were the ones who made sure that every land was abiding by the law. They could dethrone a king through a trial, and King Martin would never allow such embarrassment to befall him.

"Don’t listen to them, Martin! Eloise is your daughter! I am your wife! You should listen to me!"

King Martin clenched his jaw. "Bring the Queen to her chambers. Do not let out until I say so," he gave his word to the head guard and two guards went to each side of the queen.

Queen Thalia’s jaw dropped. She could not believe what was happening.

"You are not in the right state of mind, Thalia. You need to rest. Accompany your mother, Cassandra," the King said coldly.

As much as King Martin wanted to stand by his family and his daughter, he could not neglect his responsibilities as the king. He also did not want this incident to draw the Supreme House’s attention and subject him to their scrutiny.

"No! Cassandra, please do something! Your sister Eloise they will kill her! Oh my poor child!" the Queen was hysterical. She usually minded her reputation and always held back in front of the public but this time she was caught off guard by the situation. She completely forgot where she was and how many eyes were watching her lose her mind.

Eloise continued to growl and bare her teeth like a madwoman. Half of the guests had left the castle the moment they saw there was a black mage present in the hall while the other half remained, most of them were vampires and mages who wanted to know what would happen to the firstborn of Evardin’s royal family. It was an intriguing subject to gossip about since the news would surely be a controversial one.

"Bring the black mage to the dungeon and burn her," the King said ruthlessly. "If you want to make sure that she will be killed, you are free to join the guards in the dungeon, my dear court ministers and councilmen."

Everyone seemed satisfied with the King’s decision. The royal guards went to Eloise and put a cloth on her mouth so she would stop baring her teeth. With her wrists and ankles chained, she could do nothing with the guards when they picked her up like trash to be disposed.

The people were about to leave the castle as the celebration was ruined and they already knew what would happen to Eloise, however, everyone’s attention was caught by a scream of terror.

"Your Majesty!" The middle-aged head maid brought herself in front of the King with a horrified expression.

"Prince Casper is dead! H-he was murdered on his bed!"

As though Eloise being a black mage wasn’t shocking enough, another bloody news came out on the same night, leaving most people dumbfounded.

Even Lauren was shocked. Despite Casper being a wicked child, she knew he was nothing but a kid who didn’t have the chance to explore the world outside the castle because of his weak body. She never thought of harming Casper, let alone killing him, so it made her wonder who did it.

"What did you say?!" The King’s voice thundered, but before the terrified maid could repeat herself, he stormed out of the hall to check on the situation his only son was into.
