Kissing Hellfire: Marry Me, Evil Lord -
Chapter 51: What if I did?
Chapter 51: What if I did?
"Just to make it clear, I have no plans in violating any rule in our contract. I want to do nothing with Jasper. Nothing like what you are thinking," Lauren broke the silence first.
"What do you want from him then?" Alec asked, looking straight at her as they were sitting across from each other. "If it has something to do with your plans, as your partner I believe I have the right to know."
Lauren sighed. "It concerns my plans, yes. But it doesn’t directly involve you, and didn’t we agree to play each other’s part while respecting boundaries? You said you have your own world and there are some things that don’t require my knowledge, it is the same with this. I can handle things perfectly alone so you don’t have to worry."
"Did you respect that boundary you are talking about when you snuck into my dungeon?"
"But I have a valid reason for that! A maid died and I suspected you were hiding some sinister secret down your mansion that could implicate me. I just didn’t want to put my position at risk. Besides, didn’t you force me to answer a personal question? You got even."
"If you have a reason for that, then I have a reason for this as well. Didn’t it cross your mind that if someone recognized you in the ball, things would go dire? The married third princess of Evardin dared to cheat on her husband with a lowly lord’s son," he smirked darkly as if the thought was enough to make him go livid. "If you want to gain a foothold in the royal family, I suggest you should stop pulling crazy tricks, princess."
"It was not a crazy trick. I was trying to get a piece of important information," Lauren corrected because she didn’t like how he made it sound like what she did was a mere child’s play. "And I know I wouldn’t get busted. Most of the guests are wealthy people but they don’t belong to the elite class which are the ones who usually see me at royal balls and soirees. I don’t do things without thinking, my husband, if that is how you see it."
When they arrived at the mansion, the butler who saw the frown on Lauren’s face and the dark expression of his master didn’t dare step on the couple’s way and was quick to conclude that the two must have argued again.
When they went to the bedroom, instead of going straight to the closet, Lauren went to the table of wines in the corner and poured herself a glass. On her first days in the mansion, the table was only filled with blood wines but she asked the butler to put some normal wines later on as she found it could help her sleep in most nights.
Alec took off his coat and while he was unbuttoning the first buttons of his white inner shirt, his gaze flew to Lauren who was drinking wine in the corner, still flaring up and trying to calm herself with a glass of alcohol.
Although Lauren was in a dark part of the room, Alec’s vampire eyes could clearly see every detail of her. And despite how he hated the skimpy dress adoring her slender body, he must admit it made her look more alluring... tempting. But the thought of another man touching her made his jaw clench. He couldn’t help but fantasize about cutting off the man’s fingers one by one and letting the bastard watch while he was feeding them to wild dogs.
After drinking a glass, Lauren felt it wasn’t enough to calm her down and was about to pour another glass but Alec came and took the bottle from her hand.
"One glass is enough. That is not for vampires but that is strong for normal wines."
Lauren smirked at him with an annoyed look. "I have high alcohol tolerance so don’t treat me like a child. Why are you even still here?"
Alec’s eyes narrowed at the question. "This is my room, Lauren."
"But you don’t sleep here and stay up all night in your study."
"Why does it sound like a rant to me?" Stepping closer to her, Lauren smelled Alec’s masculine scent and felt his warm breath on her face as he crouched and held the edge of the table at each of her sides, locking her in between his arms.
"I thought you might need a little time to adjust around me so I just stayed in my study the past nights. Tell me, do you want me here?"
Lauren felt a shudder in her chest and she guessed it was probably her heart. Looking at Alec up close, she noticed his eyes looked different at that moment. They were still gray, only that this time they turned into swirls of dark gray and red mixed together, rimmed by a dark ring.
"It is not a rant, don’t imagine. I’m just trying to say that since you don’t stay here at night, maybe you can leave now so I can take my rest," she told him, feeling the urge to push him away because she felt like she didn’t have enough air to fill her lungs with him hovering over her.
Why was she suddenly feeling tensed anyway? Was it the strong wine? But what she said was true, she had high alcohol tolerance so there was no way it affected her with just a glass.
Perhaps she just really couldn’t help but feel anxious every time he was this near because at the back of her mind, she knew he could do things to her, dark things she couldn’t imagine, and she had no right to refuse. She didn’t want the feeling of being powerless, of being under someone else’s mercy, that was why in the face of a man who was showing her dominance, she felt unsettling twists in her stomach.
"Did you have fun dancing with him?" Alec asked and he sounded like an officer questioning a criminal to weigh if she deserved punishment or not.
Although the anxiety was crawling under her skin, Lauren didn’t let it show on her face.
"What if I did? Will it make you jealous?"
One corner of his lips tugged up, humorless. The smirk was cruelly bewitching and even though Lauren was aware of how his eyes spoke danger, she couldn’t help but stare at his dark orbs offering her a fiery glare.
