Kissing Hellfire: Marry Me, Evil Lord -
Chapter 48: Disappointed
Chapter 48: Disappointed
Alec took off his black gloves and threw them on Lauren’s lap.
"Wear that."
"How charitable you are, dear husband," she smirked at him and wore the gloves. She had always found the cold uncomfortable and it didn’t help how Evardin’s rainy days were colder compared to other lands.
When they returned to the mansion that evening, Lauren remembered the maid who died.
"Wait," she stopped Alec before he could go upstairs.
"That maid you tasked to send food to the deranged man, don’t you think there is something odd with her death?"
"She was attacked by the deranged human because she must have gone too close when she went to his cell. What about it?" Alec asked with a bland tone, showing no interest in the topic.
"I heard she was just a human. She wouldn’t be too careless to go any closer to the man when he looked scary and dangerous. She could slide the tray of food down the ground so it would reach the deranged human without her going further, so I don’t think it is as simple as you think. What if someone pushed her?"
"How unlucky of her then," Alec replied briefly and Lauren looked at him with disbelief.
"You are the lord of the mansion, if I may remind you. Your servants are part of your scope of responsibility, and you will just talk like that?"
Disappointment glimmered in Lauren’s eyes and Alec’s jaw clenched.
"Don’t give me that look. You know I have a lot of things to do, Lauren. You can’t expect me to waste my time investigating a maid’s death when clearly she died because of her own foolishness."
He walked past her but she went in front of him.
"How could you say that it is a waste of time when we are talking about a life here? If you forgot, it was you who gave her a dangerous task-"
"And she was very well compensated for her service. It is only fair," Alec cut her off.
Lauren shook her head. She couldn’t believe him!
"If there is nothing else. I’m going upstairs now. Take your dinner and go to bed. Stop thinking about nonsense," he said and ascended the stairs.
Lauren looked at Alec’s back sharply. She didn’t even know why she bothered expecting him to care about the maid’s death, or to at least spare it some attention when she knew he was a coldblooded man who only cared about himself.
Days passed and while Alec was busy with the council work, Lauren was taking her time planning her next step now that it seemed Prince Dominic was really marrying her eldest sister, Eloise. There was no formal announcement about their engagement yet, but from what she heard, King Martin already promised Eloise’s hand to the Bodeville prince.
Lauren couldn’t wait to live in the royal castle again.
"Any news about Jasper Owens?" she asked. Although the assassination wasn’t successful and she wasn’t harmed in any way, it didn’t mean she would just let it pass.
"Mr. Owens is not a relative of the Queen. I checked it in the registry. About how they knew each other, I am still looking into it, Your Highness. I have sent some men to spy on the man. Please give me more time," said Darius, standing beside Lauren like a loyal knight to his queen.
"Also, Lord Owens is hosting a masquerade ball in his mansion tonight. Mr. Owens will attend. I thought you might want to know."
A masquerade ball.
Now Lauren found something interesting to do.
When she went back to the Everston mansion that afternoon, she bought a new dress along the way and a mask. She had this feeling that something was odd with Jasper Owens and the Queen’s connection. She wanted to know if she could find anything about Queen Thalia through him.
With the threat of the rise of deranged humans, Lauren knew Evardin would be in chaos soon. Anyone could be part of the conspiracy, and although she knew the Queen would not want harm to befall the royal family, Lauren couldn’t be sure if she had schemes under her sleeves and if she was conspiring with the traitors.
"Is Lauren upstairs?" Alec asked the butler when he arrived from work.
Lauren had left half an hour ago to attend the ball in Lord Owens’ mansion, and now that the butler realized his master didn’t know where his wife had gone, knowing the lord’s temperament, Oswin felt a little nervous about breaking the news to him.
Clearing his throat, the butler tried to sound calm. "Her highness had left half an hour ago, milord. I believe she had gone to Lord Owens’ mansion to attend a ball."
Oswin wanted to take a step back when he saw how his master’s eyes turned darker.
"How come I wasn’t informed that we received an invitation this morning?" Alec asked as invitations were always sent during the mornings.
"T-there was no invitation, sire."
"What do you mean there was no invitation?"
Although the lord was just standing in front of him and only glaring at him, Oswin felt like his neck was being squeezed and he couldn’t breathe.
"Lord Owens is a businessman who owns several gambling houses in the town, Master Alec. He only sends invitations to the rich families he is acquainted with, and high-ranked officials are not included because he knows the council doesn’t like his way of doing business."
If that was the case, it was impossible Lauren was invited because everyone knew she was married to him, thought Alec, getting suspicious of what the princess was up to this time.
"Have you done the task I gave you?"
"Yes, milord. I sent the maid into the dungeon and let the deranged man kill her. I have also told the other servants about it for them to be aware and so they won’t dare make the same mistake."
Without Lauren knowing, Alec asked the butler to dig into how the maid named Lyla died and he found out that Lauren was right, something was wrong with it because, in truth, Lyla didn’t go near the deranged human when she brought the food. She was pushed by another maid who followed her into the dungeon. The other maid was envious of how the lord was giving Lyla a special task and thought that they were having an affair.
At the back of his mind, the butler wondered what on earth happened to his master to care about a maid’s death when he never cared about the strife between the servants before as long as they served him right.
Oswin couldn’t help but think if it had something to do with the disappointed look the princess gave the lord some nights ago.
