Chapter 235: Have We Met before?
Chapter 235: Have We Met before?
"You three," Dorothy called Noelle and her two friends who had just descended the stairs in the servants’ hall. It was early in the morning, barely six, and they just left their quarters to start the day.
Dorothy was in the hall, talking with the maids. Noelle, Jenny and Isabel went to them. Noelle then realized that Dorothy was briefing the maids and assigning personal servants to the special guests since they would be staying in the palace for a few days.
Jenny and two other maids were assigned to Princess Seraphine, the first princess, while Isabel and two maids were assigned to Prince Dominic, the second prince.
Meanwhile, Noelle was assigned to Prince Luke.
"You will follow your masters everywhere they go unless they tell you to stay put. Your duty ends on bedtime, and the palace’s bedtime is ten in the evening."
Isabel was thrilled to serve a royal as she had never been given a chance before. Jenny took this as a dangerous job, after all, one must tread lightly around such powerful people. One mistake could lead to grave punishment.
"The princesses are in the tea room, the assigned maids must go there now. Prince Dominic is in his bedroom, so his maids should go wait on his door and attend to him once he has woken up," said Dorothy. She then looked at Noelle and the other two maids Noelle would work with. "Prince Luke is in one of the pavilions in the west courtyard."
Some maids were also assigned to assist the queen and king of Bodeville. But since the couple had yet to wake up, they were instructed to wait by their bedroom door.
"Let’s talk later," Isabel mouthed at Noelle and Jenny, grinning before they took different paths.
In the past day, Noelle only spent her whole day in the storage rooms. She hadn’t explored the palace yet, so it was her first time going to the west courtyard which was on the opposite side of the servants’ hall.
She saw some old maids looking at her weirdly. They were muttering something in the corners.
’Doesn’t she look like the late Queen Lauren?’
’Her face is so similar to Queen Lauren’s!’
’But she doesn’t have the striking blue eyes the late queen was famous for.’
’And she looks slimmer and shabby.’
Although Noelle couldn’t hear what they were whispering about, she had a feeling they were talking about her.
"What are they whispering about?" asked one of the two young maids Noelle was with. She was a chubby lady with a height two inches shorter than Noelle’s five feet and six inches.
"I am Kathy by the way," said the chubby maid, giving a friendly smile to Noelle. "This is my cousin, Marie. We used to live in a small village in Acheron, but we came here a few weeks ago when our aunt got married to a man from Evardin."
"Nice to meet you, Kathy, Marie," Noelle replied, returning the smile she received from Kathy.
The murmuring group of maids was out of their sight now and they were walking down a hallway, but Noelle couldn’t stop thinking about what just happened.
What were those weird stares and murmurings all about? Were they gossiping about her?
But why would they? With her bare face without the slightest stain of rogue or powder, her hair tied in a plain bun, and a generic maid’s dress, Noelle believed she looked utterly dull. Someone who wouldn’t draw much attention.
Perhaps she had something on her face. Did she look dirty?
She looked at her maid’s uniform but her clothes were clean. She had a decent bath and cleaned up pretty well before leaving the maid’s quarters. After all, they were instructed to always keep a tidy look since they were not ordinary servants but royal maids.
"Do I have something on my face?" Noelle could not help herself so she asked Kathy and Marie.
"No," Kathy shook her head, and so did Marie. "You look pretty nice."
Noelle nodded. The more she got confused about why those maids were looking at her so strangely and gossiping about her.
Nearing the pavilion where Prince Luke was sitting, Noelle noticed the little girl standing by the prince’s side and talking to him with a lively smile.
Since the day she arrived in the palace, which was only a day ago, she had never seen the young girl around. But when Bodeville’s royal family arrived yesterday, she did not see them with a child. So who was this young girl?
"Good morning, Your Highness," the three maids said in unison as they stopped in front of the table where the mage prince took his time leisurely drinking wine.
"Good morning," Prince Luke replied politely, then he added, "How may I be of help, young ladies?"
This was the crown prince of Bodeville. Their land was the biggest in the north and Noelle heard about the man once. He was said to be a well-spoken young man in his mid-twenties who had gentle facial features and a pair of warm amber eyes that could make anyone smile.
Noelle realized the prince had indeed a countenance one would deem kind and harmless. He even sounded very polite to them even though they were merely maids.
"We were tasked to be your personal maids, Your Highness, that is why we are here to aid you with anything you may need," Marie answered.
"Oh," Luke nodded in acknowledgment. He let out a soft chuckle and said, "I didn’t request personal maids, though."
"But it is customary in the palace to provide personal servants for guests, Your Highness, and we can only obey orders," said Noelle in a diplomatic tone.
"Of course. I am not asking you to leave," Luke clarified while watching Noelle’s face as though he were dissecting her.
"Pardon me, but have we met before?"
Both Kathy and Marie looked at Noelle who was in between them.
Noelle didn’t know what to say. She should say no since she didn’t have any recollection of meeting the prince, but how could she be so sure when she had lost all her memories five years ago?
