Kissing Hellfire: Marry Me, Evil Lord
Chapter 228: This Must End Now

Chapter 228: This Must End Now

Ethan briefly glanced at Julian. He said, "The council house is in the north district. It will take you a little time to travel and black mages are everywhere."

"But Dr. Bentley is the most capable healer mage. He must have a cure for the poison spell."

"You should bring some men to escort you then. You will need to hold Edith if you travel by horse, so you won’t be able to fight enemies on your way."

"Let’s go with them, Ethan," said Vivian. "The north district is the closest to the castle, and I heard the castle is being attacked by rebels. I want to know how Lauren is doing."

Ethan was conflicted. He was also worried about Lauren and wanted to accompany Julian, but he was worried about Vivian. His initial plan was to go to a safe house his family owned outside the town to ensure Vivian’s safety, but Vivian was hellbent on helping people. She said that she couldn’t waste the medicines her aunt sent to her.

"We can go to the council with Julian, but there is no way I will bring you to the castle. It’s very dangerous. I know you are worried about Lauren. I am too, but we cannot afford to be reckless, Vivi. Besides, half of the army is defending the castle, and I have trust that King Alec wouldn’t let anyone harm Lauren."

Vivian was so worried about Lauren but Ethan was right. The castle was in a very crucial situation and they could not afford to be reckless. At the moment, they should prioritize helping Julian and Edith.

Back in the royal castle...

Soldiers surrounded Alec and Lauren. Darius, too, kept a close distance, his dark red eyes alert for any threat.

Lauren couldn’t accept that her mother had really come back. She could not believe how her fate had been tied to Alec since thirteen years ago. A part of her wanted to deny it and search for another proof in hopes that it would prove otherwise.

But after learning what was inside the book she found in the spellbound ship, she learned that Luciana, the great priestess who cast the Capewell curse and gave way to the first generation of black mages, somehow knew that such a time would come.

A time when a descendant of the Capewell family would wreak havoc, destroy lives, and threaten a kingdom. And only another descendant had the power to stop it.

The first passage in the book clearly relayed the message.

"In epochs passed, or a thousand years’ embrace,

A kin shall rise from death’s profound grace,

A villain, bound to snare the innocent’s breath,

Yet destiny’s heir shall face her moment of depth,

To break the curse, she must make a choice,

In life’s delicate dance, her destiny unveiled."

Lauren was not sure how the priestess wrote the book when it was said that she was never able to reclaim her sanity after being possessed by the demon she summoned, but perhaps she was able to make a way from the other side. After all, the world has a lot of phenomena that cannot be explained.

"Why are you wounded?" Alec asked when she smelled Lauren’s blood and found her wounded palm.

"It is nothing."

Lauren kept a straight face as she stared at Mildred.

"It’s nice meeting you again, mother."

The casual tone Lauren used made Alec’s eyes narrow. He noticed how calm Lauren was as if she already accepted that the rebels’ leader was really her mother.

"You said you wanted vengeance, right? Father and his family had received their punishment. They are not here now, so why are you still doing this?"

Mildred smiled. Half of her face looked beautiful and serene, just like how she looked thirteen years ago.

But Lauren could not see the same glimmer she saw in her mother’s eyes in the past. The glimmer of compassion and affection.

"It is because only I should be the one by your side, dearie," Mildred said, glancing at Alec, "and no one else."

"So you want the throne, then? You want to rule this kingdom, so you want me back in your life now."

It hurt Lauren to think that her mother’s supposed peace was ruined because William Everston dug her out of her grave and revived her. A dead person should not be resurrected, this was the law of nature.

Despite William possessing the ability to revive the dead as an innate gift, it was still dark magic and simply could not be done without paying a huge price. Mildred returned from the dead, but because of the dark magic that fueled her back to life, only half of her managed to return—the dark side of her.

"It is not about the throne, Lauren. Your husband’s father, William Everston did this to me!" Mildred pointed to the burnt side of her face. "Because of his lack of skill, his magic was flawed when he revived me. I ran wild and was almost killed by a mage! I was fortunate enough to meet people who helped me..."

Mildred smirked, recalling how she slowly managed to control herself as she hid herself far from the town. She did it by consuming people’s energy.

"Regardless of the result, I am still thankful for William, though. If it were not for him, we would not meet again. However, I shall not allow you to spend your life with this young Everston. Can’t you see, sweetie? He is blocking us from each other’s lives!"

"Shut up. It is you who don’t belong here," Alec muttered darkly.

"See, Lauren? He does not respect me as your mother!" She let out a bark of laughter. "Why would you put up with a man like him?"

Lauren’s expression remained indifferent. The more she talked to Mildred, the more she became convinced that her mother and this woman were not the same person. They might have shared the same body but they could not be the same.

In the middle of the tension, Matthias came running to Alec’s side. He had stains of blood on his clothes.

"Your Majesty, I just received Colton’s missive. Half of our army in town are injured by a strong poison spell. Some of us here are also suffering from the same poison. It is done by the black mages."

Upon hearing this, Lauren fisted her wounded palm, clenching it so hard that drops of her blood fell on the bloody ground of the courtyard.

This must end now.
