Kissing Hellfire: Marry Me, Evil Lord -
Chapter 218: Body Under the Bed
Chapter 218: Body Under the Bed
"Maids sending meals to the royal chambers do not take too much time. Something is off here." Matthias turned to look at the double doors of the bedroom.
"Maybe the queen wants to bathe and dress up and she requires the maid’s assistance?" Julian could not fathom why Matthias seemed disturbed just because of a human maid inside the room where the queen was. Julian knew Lauren. That maid could not pose any threat to her, so he was not worried.
Matthias had been staying close to the king and queen. He did not know for certain what was happening with the queen as Alec did not mention anything about it, but he knew the queen was dealing with something serious. He only wanted to make sure nothing was happening inside and that Lauren was safe and sound. He might not see tomorrow’s sunrise if she had lost even just a tendril of her hair.
After three knocks, Matthias said, "Your Majesty, have you finished your snacks?"
Inside, Lauren’s train of thought was disturbed by Matthias’ voice. She had not returned to her original appearance, so she panicked. It was only then that she realized that Matthias and Julian must be wondering why the maid who sent her snacks did not leave the room!
Matthias was an observant man. Lauren knew that he was not one of Alec’s commandants for nothing. She did not know if Alec had told Matthias anything, but she should not blatantly display what a monster she was. The more people knew, the more people would get implicated if the Supreme House knew.
"I am done eating my snacks. I am doing my hair now," Lauren said. Would it have been better if she said she knocked out the maid? "Please inform me once the king is done with his meeting."
Alec would surely check on her anytime soon. She could not erase a memory through a spell because of her lack of skills, but maybe Alec could. Erasing one’s memory was not practiced by many people because only some could do it. It required a certain level of skill in the arts of spells, but she trusted Alec could do it.
She was thankful that Matthias did not ask more questions. However, her dilemma continued. She did not know how long she would have to stay being a white-eyed monster. Was it triggered by her emotions? She supposed it was.
She was thinking and worrying too much about the black mages and deranged humans attacking the town. But could she even stop her emotions from creeping in? No. To simply say it, she could turn into a monster anytime, anywhere. And she did not even know if one day she would never return to her original appearance again.
When Alec entered the room, he found Lauren standing by the window, staring at the blurry window glass. A few minutes before Alec arrived, Lauren saw herself change back into her original appearance. She was not sure how she had done it, but the thought of forever having that face did not sit well with her. She wondered if she should just kill herself if that happened.
"Why did you put a barrier in the room?" Alec asked. The barrier was not made out of magic stronger than his, so he was able to break into it. "Did something happen?"
Before Lauren could answer, Alec noticed another scent in the room. A human, he thought. Then his eyes flew to the bed across the room. No one was on the mattress, yet he knew someone should be under the bed.
"You killed someone?" Alec raised his brow at Lauren. With a few long strides, he had closed the distance between them.
Lauren turned to him, her face marred with worry and dread.
"She is the maid who delivered snacks. You can erase a person’s memory, can’t you?"
This gave Alec a hint that something really happened. Lauren saw the question in his face and she sighed.
"My...appearance changed earlier," she said. She knew she did not have to elaborate because Alec had already seen her before so he must know what she was talking about. "The maid happened to see me. She was too scared. I knew she would not calm down even if I let her go, so I cast a sleeping spell on her."
"If you are worried that she might tell people, then I think it is better if we get rid of her."
Lauren was not surprised by Alec’s proposition. She knew he would hesitate to go to such lengths just to pacify the situation and stop her from worrying. But taking an innocent life was at the bottom of her list.
Alec frowned. He knew the kindhearted little Lauren would not resort to violence when it came to the innocent. "The spell of erasing a memory sometimes wears off depending on how strong a person’s mind is. Would you rather take the risk?"
"We cannot kill her, Alec. She did nothing wrong. Besides, it will make everything suspicious if a maid suddenly disappears after sending snacks to the queen. Some maids must have known what was the last thing she did."
"Did you suffer from any pain?" Alec shifted the subject. He looked at her from head to foot as if he were hiding some wounds beneath her clothes.
"No, I did not. I guess it is the pacifier. It is working." It was indeed relieving that she did not feel any pain on her chest like how it usually happened in the past, but remembering the scene earlier with the maid, Lauren felt a disturbing twist in her gut.
"But something else happened."
Alec grew more attentive. "What is it?"
Lauren fidgeted. She rolled her tongue up inside her mouth before she spoke in a low, cold voice, "I felt different. I was sane, I did not lose control, yet at the same time I was not thinking too straight. My mind was different and I saw the maid as a prey..." She paused, feeling a weight on her shoulders as she continued, "I fantasized killing her."
