Chapter 205: The place doesn’t matter
Standing by the garden’s shed, Lauren asked Alec, "What if they know we have prepared for their attack?"
"Even if they do know, let’s see what their course of action will be," Alec said calmly, his eyes looking far ahead at the garden’s maze.
It had stopped snowing for a few days now and the faint sunlight was starting to penetrate the thick mist in the sky.
"The bottom line is we know they will stage a big attack. No matter if they attack tomorrow or the next day, at least we have prepared."
Lauren nodded, getting Alec’s point. Even if the rebels would not attack tonight because they knew they had prepared their defense, they would still attack anytime soon so it didn’t matter if they knew or not.
"Don’t you feel sick?" Alec looked at her with a concerned expression, looking out for any physical signs of distress on her face. "The pacifier you took was a very strong drug. Don’t you feel anything at all?"
She shook her head and offered him a small smile. "I don’t."
"Are you sure?"
"Do I look like I am in pain or something?" She moved closer to him and tiptoed to give him a better view of her face. "I believe I look better than I did yesterday, though. If the mirror wasn’t cheating on me when I looked at it earlier, I saw a little color in my pale cheeks," she said, pointing to her right cheek with her index finger.
As she fell back on her heels, he touched her right cheek gently with his thumb, then his eyes narrowed.
"Are you trying to outsmart me now?" His voice was laced with a lethal tone. "You put some rouge on your cheeks."
Lauren rolled her eyes and sat on the round table behind them.
He turned to her with annoyance. "Tell me honestly, Lauren. I want to know what you are feeling. If you think lying would put me at ease, think twice."
"I didn’t lie about what I feel. I am truly fine right now, Alec. I think the pacifier will last a little longer. So far, I don’t feel any pain."
Her eyes squinted a bit when she remembered something. "Anyway, I didn’t find the box of vials in the drawer this morning. Did you take them?"
He didn’t need to say yes or nod as confirmation, the way he looked at her gave him away.
"I will keep it for you so I’d be sure you only take one vial a week. If you feel any pain before a week passes, we will take care of this my way."
And his way was making her feed on people’s energy. There was no need to explain because she knew his resolve on this. He wouldn’t even hesitate for a fraction of a second if she was okay with it.
"I thought we had agreed on that part?"
Crouching in front of her while she remained sitting on the table, Alec spoke, "There is no agreement if you end up writhing in pain in front of me, Lauren. There is no way I’d watch that. If your conscience is the problem, or you having nightmares, I’m sure we can do something about it. There are spells we can use to erase your memory of feeding on people’s energy. And like I said, you won’t feed on the innocents, so you shouldn’t count it as murder."
"Do you think my conscience or my nightmares are the only problem with it? No, Alec." Lauren shook her head once, her eyes looked lost, heartbroken, and frustrated. "Every time I drain people’s energy, it feels as though I am making room within myself for other beings—their essence courses through my veins, and it is like if I am growing someone else inside me. So please, I beg you, don’t bring up this subject again."
Feeding on bad people’s energy was the worst solution at hand. Their dark energy would stay in her body and she would eventually grow into the people she killed. She didn’t want that.
Silence took over them for a moment.
Sighing, Lauren lowered her gaze to her lap, refusing to meet Alec’s eyes. She knew he only wanted what was best for her, but she felt annoyed by how he kept pushing this matter. It wasn’t what she needed.
"I’m sorry..." he finally spoke.
Her gaze remained on her lap.
"I’m sorry I am pushing you to do something you don’t want. It was not my intention to upset you."
Nodding slowly, she lifted her gaze, meeting the dark hues of his gray orbs.
"I understand that you have good intentions, but this is not the solution for me," she conveyed, her voice gentle and delicate as if her words were melting upon her lips. "I made a promise to you, didn’t I? I vowed to fight for us. I will not give up. You need to trust me. I have a feeling the answer is in the book and I will figure out how to unseal it one of these days."
"I am just worried," he said so quietly. "I don’t want to lose you."
A gentle smile curled upon Lauren’s lips as she reassured him, her voice filled with unwavering conviction. "You won’t."
The weight of his gaze made his eyes look darker.
"I won’t die, Alec. I proposed to you, remember? I still want a real wedding with you."
Shifting the topic to a lighter one, she asked, "Where do you think we can hold our wedding? I don’t want a grand one and I definitely don’t want it here in the castle. I want it to be intimate, just us and some friends."
Alec stayed silent as he stared at her seriously.
"Ah, why don’t we hold it in the spellbound ship? I’m sure the great priestess and her husband wouldn’t mind it. The sea will be a perfect place."
She tilted her head when she still didn’t get any response. "What do you think, hmm?"
When he finally spoke, his eyes turned gentle and soulful.
"The place doesn’t matter at all. I’d even marry you in a muddy street."
