Chapter 202: Shattered Dream (2)
The very idea of reconnecting with her mother, even if it was only within the confines of a dream, held immeasurable significance to her. She had yearned for this moment, quietly praying for the chance to see and hear her mother once more, even if it was just a fleeting encounter in the realm of dreams.
No one else could fathom the depths of her yearning, the unspoken desires she had carried within her for all those years. The absence of her mother’s presence in her dreams had been a constant reminder of the void in her heart, a longing that remained unfulfilled.
Yet, against all odds, here she was, hearing her mother’s voice once again—soft, haunting, and undeniably familiar.
Lauren’s breath caught in her throat as she waited for a response, her heart pounding hard. The dream held the potential to grant her an ethereal reunion, a chance to reconnect with her mother in a way she had longed for but had never dared hope would come to pass.
Time seemed to stretch as the forest enveloped her in its enigmatic embrace. The air was thick with anticipation, as if the dream realm itself held its breath, awaiting the unfolding of this profound encounter.
The echoes of her question faded into the silence, leaving Lauren suspended in a liminal space, yearning for her mother’s voice to provide solace and confirmation.
"Yes, it is me, my sweet Lauren," the voice replied, carrying a wave of nostalgia and warmth. The familiarity in the voice, the tender endearment that mirrored her mother’s affectionate tone from her childhood, tugged at her heart.
At that moment, Lauren’s mind was transported back to a time when she was an innocent, carefree seven-year-old child, blissfully unaware of the complexities of the world.
Memories flooded her senses—the soft touch of her mother’s hand, the soothing lullabies sung during bedtime, the warmth of her embrace.
Lauren’s voice trembled with an earnest plea, carried by the wind that rustled through the forest.
"Why can you not show yourself? I want to see you," she whispered, her words a gentle entreaty that resonated with her deep longing and hopeful anticipation.
Lauren yearned to lay her eyes upon her mother even just for once, to witness her familiar face, to be enveloped in her comforting embrace. The desire to bridge the gap between the ethereal and the tangible grew stronger with every passing moment.
But the beautiful illusion came shattering in front of her when she heard the voice’s next words.
"But you have to do one thing first, sweetheart. Kill Alec Everston, only then shall we meet."
Lauren’s heart sank, and a chilling silence descended upon the forest. The voice that had carried her mother’s familiar tones had suddenly taken a dark turn, wrenching her out of the embrace of hope and love. The words echoed in her mind, their sinister weight destroying the fragile peace she had found in this dream.
Lauren’s racing heartbeat began to gradually calm as she found herself back in the familiar surroundings of her bedroom. The remnants of the haunting dream lingered, casting a shadow over her thoughts and emotions. Her body trembled slightly as she tried to regain her composure, her breathing labored.
"What’s wrong?" An arm was suddenly around her and she noticed Alec was now by her side, his comforting presence offered a sense of security in the midst of her distress.
As she gazed out of the window, she realized that the dawn had yet to arrive, and the darkness of the night was still embracing the world outside. It was as if the night itself mirrored the lingering unease within her soul.
"I just had a horrible dream..." she muttered quietly and pressed her head against Alec’s chest.
Alec held her tighter, his presence a source of comfort and stability as she shared the remnants of her distressing dream. His steady heartbeat against her cheek reassured her, grounding her in the reality that surrounded them.
It was just a dream, Lauren told herself.
But the voice of her mother felt so real and so vivid that she couldn’t get it out of her system. She always yearned for the time when she could see her again even just in a dream, but what she got wasn’t a wonderful reunion. It was a nightmare.
How the voice told her to kill Alec, she could still remember the exact words and the exact sweet tone. What was the meaning of it? Why did she have such a strange dream?
Surely, it was just her subconscious mind playing tricks on her. Yet, the lingering voice of her mother, the vividness of the encounter continued to haunt her thoughts.
"What was it all about? Tell me," Alec urged, his voice filled with empathy.
Lauren took a deep breath, gathering her thoughts as she prepared to recount the unsettling details of her dream to Alec. She appreciated his understanding and knew that sharing her experience with him would help alleviate some of the weight on her shoulders.
"In the dream, I found myself in a dark forest, surrounded by towering trees," she began, her voice carrying a mixture of apprehension and vulnerability. "And then, I heard her voice—the voice of my mother. It was so sweet and familiar, just like when I was a little girl. I was filled with happiness, thinking that I finally had the chance to see her again, even if it was only in a dream."
Lauren took a deep breath, gathering her thoughts as she prepared to recount the unsettling details of her dream to Alec. She appreciated his understanding and knew that sharing her experience with him would help alleviate some of the weight on her shoulders.
"But then, everything changed. Her voice took on an eerie undertone, and she asked me to do something unimaginable. She told me to kill you, Alec."
Alec’s brows furrowed with concern, his gaze unwavering as he listened intently to her words.
"Kill me?" he repeated softly, his voice laced with disbelief and a bit of amusement. "That’s a horrifying demand, especially coming from the voice of your mother. But remember, my love, it was just a dream. Dreams can be distorted, and they often reflect our deepest fears and conflicts."
