Chapter 143: A Detour to the Castle
Chapter 143: A Detour to the Castle
In the main streets of Evardin heading to the castle, the Haystone’s carriage came to a halt because two cargo carriages had been stuck in the middle of the way due to an accident. Jennifer who was very eager to arrive at the castle after the letter she received yesterday was fuming when the coachman came by the carriage’s door.
"Why did you suddenly stop? I need to be in the castle for breakfast!" She yelled at the coachman. The noble lady who was refined and kind was only for a show. When no one of notable background was present, she did not mind showing her true colors.
Jennifer woke up earlier than usual because she was expecting to join the King for breakfast. Thinking that the letter of invitation she received yesterday was from the king, she was beyond ecstatic.
Being a concubine was only a step away from being the queen. And with Lauren drinking the poisoned tea during their meeting, she was certain the woman would die soon. It meant if Alec would be pleased by her, she would officially be a concubine, and soon when the queen died, there would be no other woman to replace her position but her.
"Take a detour, you idiot! There must be another way!"
"We can take a detour but the road might be a little rocky, milady. Most people avoid it," replied the coachman.
"If it will take us to the castle sooner, then I don’t care!"
The coachman decided to do what the lady wanted. Jennifer was too drowned in her fantasy that she didn’t care about anything else at the moment. The most important for her was to arrive at the castle on time and join the King’s breakfast.
The detour was a rocky path in the forest. Most town residents did not take the path because the main road was more convenient and wild animals might appear, but some still go this way when there was a problem with the main road. However, it was still early in the morning and only Jennifer’s carriage was heading to the castle.
"I wonder what Lauren’s face will be when she sees me. She must be brokenhearted when she learned about her husband taking another woman into the castle," Jennifer smiled. Since childhood, she hated Lauren and often bullied her. She was surprised when she came back from Acheron and heard that Lauren became the Queen. She expected it to be Eloise or Cassandra.
One of the horses suddenly whined and the carriage came to an abrupt stop which threw Jennifer in front. She hissed when her hair was ruined after her head hit the carriage’s wall. She kicked the door open, ready to lash out at the coachman when she saw what was waiting for her outside.
The coachman’s detached head was on the ground, eyes wide open, and bloody.
Jennifer froze.
"Hello there, Lady Jennifer," when she heard the voice from behind, she immediately turned to see who it was. The familiar face of the man shocked her.
"What is the meaning of this?" Jennifer’s eyes turned crimson. She had no one by her side so she could only rely on herself. And with how her coachman was brutally killed, the man definitely did not come to have a friendly chat with her. "What are you trying to do?!"
The young man smiled in an eerie manner. With his calm disposition and gentle aura, one would say he was a kind gentleman, but the truth was far from it. He may look like a righteous knight but he was eviler than most.
"Have I not warned you, dear Jennifer? I heard you dared poison the Queen," his gentle voice made Jennifer feel chills all over her body. She was a pureblooded vampire but she had no special ability, and she knew she was no match to the man in front of her.
"When you invited her to your goddamn tea party and almost had her killed, I let it slide. After all, the mistress thought you can be useful despite how airheaded you are. It’s a pity you did not heed my words. I told you not to touch her."
"Why? What is she to you? If she dies, our party will benefit from it! If I become the queen, it will be easier for us to infiltrate the royal court—"
"Do you really believe you will become the queen once she dies?" The man released a laugh of mockery. "Of course, what should I expect from a vampiress with an average brain. If the king happened to be any other man, yes, you will stand a chance. But I guess you haven’t done your research. The king is Alec Everston, you foolish girl. He’s smart and powerful. You can’t win his heart, let alone outsmart him."
"Why are you so sure that I cannot win his heart? I am sure he just married Lauren for the throne!"
"If he married her for the throne, he should have picked Eloise or Cassandra. And I have my sources. I’ve seen them and Everston seems truly smitten by Lauren."
He held her cheeks in his hand forcefully. "It takes more than a pretty face to win a man like him." He pushed her away which made her fall to the ground.
"Is it the reason why you are so obsessed with her? Because she tamed Alec Everston and you find her one of a kind?" Jennifer looked at the man whose eyes had also turned crimson, but way darker than hers. A vampire’s eyes depend on their lineage and the man was one of the elites. One of the most powerful. More reason why resistance was futile.
"Why I want her is none of your concern, Jennifer. You will die today in my hands and you have no one to blame but yourself."
Jennifer coughed blood after she received a strong kick in her gut. It was so strong that she felt like she was too weak to get back on her feet.
"I-I’m sorry alright! Please! Spare me!" She couldn’t die today and definitely not in this shabby forest. She was a step away from being a queen! She would be the King’s wife!
The man shook his head as he squatted in front of her. He smiled like he usually did every time he was in the town fooling people that he was a good man true to his duty.
"I have forgiven you once, sweetheart. In this world, second chances don’t come easily but you wasted it," he said before he picked up her head and banged her on a huge trunk.
Thick blood flowed down Jennifer’s cheeks and chest. The man pinned her on the trunk with his hand on her neck, squeezing the air out of her. He moved his face closer to hers and tasted the blood on her cheek with his tongue.
"Does it hurt?" He asked softly like he wasn’t choking her to death.
"Rest in hell, Jennifer. Once you see the devil down there, say hi for me."
