Kissing Hellfire: Marry Me, Evil Lord -
Chapter 134: Bustling Tower
Chapter 134: Bustling Tower
In the dark part of a bustling tower, Lauren and Alec appeared without being noticed by anyone.
Stepping out of the shadow, Lauren looked around and realized they were on the top of a tower filled with people eating dinner while enjoying the night view of the town.
"This is not a place in Evardin. Where are we?" She asked Alec who followed her closely.
A male worker went to them and without a question, he led them to a far table at the balcony of the tower where the view of the townscape was the best. It seemed like Alec was a regular customer of the restaurant.
"Serve us all of your best sellers," ordered Alec.
"Yes, sir." The worker nodded and left.
"You frequent here?" She asked once they were seated.
Their table was a little far from the others. The worker must have known it was how Alec wanted it. Though, with how he addressed Alec, he must have no idea about his status but only thought of him as a wealthy man.
"We are at Acheron’s south district," replied Alec, and Lauren wasn’t surprised that they were in another land.
She knew all the corners of Evardin and the place was part of the many places in the world she had yet to explore.
"What is ahead of us is Acheron’s main town," Alec glanced at the townscape beyond the tower where they were. The warm lights from the establishments and houses brought life to the night.
"I come to this place for the food and view once in a while. I love their blood wines the most."
"And you always come alone? Or with someone?" Lauren’s eyes narrowed a bit at her question.
"I come with a friend sometimes."
The word ’friend’ coming out of Alec’s mouth was something new to her. Had he ever admitted that he had a friend? She could not remember.
"So, you have a friend?" The way she said it made it sound close to impossible.
"As much as I’d love making enemies, it is also beneficial to have good connections."
"What I mean is an actual friend, Alec. Someone who doesn’t necessarily bring you benefits."
"A wise man only befriends useful people. I refuse to indulge myself in worthless connections," he said like a business tyrant who only socialized for the sake of growing influence.
She shook her head and stood. She leaned on the rail of the balcony to have a better view of the townscape. The cold wind blew her way and she realized she left her gloves.
"Here," a pair of beige gloves were handed out by a viny hand in her front. She looked at Alec who was now standing by her side.
"Why do you have my gloves?" She took them and while sliding her hands inside she did not take her eyes off him. "You are being too chivalrous. Are you trying to flirt with me?"
This made his lips twitch darkly.
"Am I?"
After wearing the gloves, she continued to look at the townscape. There were also tall towers in Evardin but there wasn’t a public one near the town. Perhaps she should suggest to the ministry of commerce to have a restaurant up in a tower.
"So what if I’m flirting with you? I suppose it is not illegal."
Her insides fluttered. Was he really serious?
A long minute passed and she dared not say a word. Her thoughts ran deep and it all boiled down to one thing. No matter if Alec was serious or just playing with her, a romantic relationship was out of her plans. She had enough on her plate and she didn’t want more complications in her life.
"Alec..."
Lauren faced him. She swallowed the bile in her throat when he saw his gentle expression. His dark eyes looked intense at first but as she stared longer, a glimpse of hopefulness peeked beneath the darkness. It was like he was hoping for something from her.
"I want nothing else from our arrangement. I already told you. I don’t want emotional attachments. I wish to leave the castle after we get to the bottom of the rebellion." Well, that was if she had enough time for that.
His jaw moved. There were many questions in his eyes and probably one of them was why she was so hellbent on leaving the castle. Why now when she was the Queen and got the power she wanted.
Though, she was surprised when he did not voice them. Maybe he knew she wouldn’t tell him the secrets she was hiding even if forced.
"Should I make you my prisoner to stop you from leaving?" His tone was playful but the way his eyes turned darker let her know that he was considering the idea.
"You can’t be serious with your affection for me," she said coldly. "I don’t believe you fell for me."
"I don’t believe it either." He cocked his head to the other side with a critical look. "I like submissive women, those who will kneel at my bidding. Someone who won’t give me problems and I can throw anytime I want."
"If that is your taste for women, you are not searching for a romantic partner but a slave," she scorned.
"You don’t have to worry though. Before I leave, I will make sure to arrange everything for you. I have asked Julian to give a list of noble ladies where you can choose a suitable lady to marry."
His looked turned sharp and she tensed at his grim tone.
"Did I ask you to do that?"
"No, but didn’t I promise to end our arrangement that way? I just want to make it clear that I am true to my word."
His lips parted to say more but before he could say a word, servants came to their table to serve the food.
Lauren sighed and sat back. Alec did the same but she noticed the displeased look he had when his eyes went to the food as if he wasn’t liking any of them.
