Kissing Hellfire: Marry Me, Evil Lord
Chapter 115: A Spy in the Castle?

Chapter 115: A Spy in the Castle?

Matthias entered the courtroom and went to Alec who was presiding over a court meeting. After hearing a few words from his subordinate, he dismissed the ministers and made his way to the east wing. Matthias told him that the guards heard shattering noises inside the Queen Dowager’s chamber where Lauren was. None of the guards dared to involve themselves in the matters between royals, so they didn’t know what was happening.

When Alec arrived outside Thalia’s room, the door opened and Lauren went out before he could step inside.

Alec was quick to scan her if there was any trace of violence in her body, thinking that she got into a fight with Thalia. He was relieved when he didn’t smell blood from her.

"Why are you here?" The grim look on Lauren’s face let Alec know that her mood had turned sour after meeting her stepmother.

When Alec didn’t answer, Matthias who was standing close behind Alec spoke, "His Majesty was worried-"

"Did I ask you to be my spokesperson, Matthias?"

Matthias lowered his head and took a step back. The other guards bowed their heads as well, pretending not to see or hear anything. Now that Alec had become the King, he replaced most of the royal guards with his men and they knew that the former warlord never liked his people being nosy about his business.

"I thought you were in the court?" Lauren asked as they walked through the silent hallway.

"The meeting has ended and I heard the servants talking that they heard shattering noises in the Queen Dowager’s chamber while you were inside. So, I came to check."

Matthias who was on the tail of the couple noticed Alec skipped the detail of how he adjourned the court meeting the moment he heard about Lauren. Noticing Alec’s subtle changes, Matthias wondered if his master had finally opened his heart to his wife. Back then he believed that Alec only married the princess to gain power over the royal court, but now he was seeing a different side of Alec people had never seen before.

"Were you worried that Queen Thalia was attacking me?" Lauren asked.

Instead of answering, Alec suddenly stopped and Matthias almost bumped into his back if he failed to stop on time.

Matthias cleared his throat and stepped back. A sigh of relief escaped his lips. Should he have bumped into the king’s back out of recklessness, he would have met his doom.

Alec turned around. "Why are you still tailing us, Matthias?"

"Um..." Matthias cleared his throat. He had been in battles and had faced all kinds of evil in all those years of serving Alec but if there was one person, he was most afraid of, it was Alec. The warlord’s dangerous eyes were enough to intimidate his enemies.

"I just want to inform you that Edith and Colton will arrive in the castle today."

"Is that all?" Alec raised a brow in irritation.

"Yes, Your Majesty. I should go ahead," Matthias said and immediately left the hallway with long strides.

"You are so uptight with your subordinates. You should cut him off some slack," Lauren said and continued walking.

"How did your talk go? Did she try to hurt you?" Alec’s tone turned darker at the last question.

"You think I would let her?" A humorless smile tugged on her lips. "I just stopped by to watch how she’s suffering. I don’t know what to do with her yet, but I plan to keep her alive for a while. The devil can torture her later in hell but I want to torment her first."

Alec smirked at her with a bemused look.

Her brows knitted. "What?"

"Nothing. It’s just amusing to hear you talk about dark stuff. You look like a sweet little angel with a pitchfork."

"There are so many innocent-looking people who are far eviler, Alec. This world is all about masks and deceit. There is nothing new." Lauren shrugged and walked ahead of him.

Of course he knew that, thought Alec. But for some reason, he just couldn’t help but notice every little thing about Lauren.

On their way to the castle’s main hall, they were surprised to hear chaotic yelling.

"I already told you it was an accident! Your pigeon was wounded and it fell on my way! I didn’t catch it!"

"Stop lying, you scum! Why were you even in front of the castle? You must be a spy!"

"Hah! A spy? Look at me, do you think I am a lowly being who pries on other people’s lives?"

"How should I know? Looks can be deceiving!"

"What is happening here?" Alec’s authoritative voice interrupted the yelling.

It was a man and a woman. The man was on his knees and his hands were tied on his back while the woman stood behind him, gripping his shoulder to keep him down.

"Your Majesty," Edith bowed. She was one of the three commandants of Alec, his third-in-command.

When the noisy newcomers came into Lauren’s view, her lips parted when she saw who was the person the woman was holding down.

"Julian?"

"Queen Lauren!" Despite the cut on his eye from Edith’s strong punch earlier, when he saw Lauren, his lips curved into a big smile like he didn’t meet a mishap at all.

Now that Lauren had become the Queen, she thought there was no reason for her to hide her trusted servants. So, she sent a missive to Darius and Julian that if they had something to report, they could come to the castle directly.

"Your Majesty, you know this man?" Edith asked in a calm tone now as if she hadn’t been yelling earlier.

Alec’s eyes fell on Julian, which made the man’s smile vanish. Julian knew Alec but he had never seen him before, and he didn’t know he was such an intimidating man. He couldn’t help but wonder if the vicious warlord was not mistreating his master. But then, he knew Lauren wasn’t the kind who allowed people to bully her.

"I told you, didn’t I? I am a trusted servant of the Queen! You keep on accusing me of being a spy!" Julian spat out as he tried to stand up but Edith’s strong grip remained on his shoulder.
